Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens to criminals when they get old? Why do some "go straight"? This book looks at the lives of 50 male ex-convicts over the age of 50 to identify the social and psychological factors that may have contributed to decreasing their criminal conduct. Most of these subjects began their criminal involvement in adolescence, and all committed property offenses; 36 could be typed as unsuccessful criminals in that they viewed crime as a means of livelihood but actually had small financial reward and were frequently incarcerated. A majority of these men experienced a process of stock-taking, usually in their thirties and forties, that led to a transformation of orientational contingencies. This transformation usually involved the ealization that crime was an unproductive enterprise, new perspectives on the self, growing awareness of time, changing aspirations and goals, and a growing sense of tiredness. Changes in the values they ascribed to intimate relations with others and to employment also contributed to lessening criminal involvement over time. These changes, cumulatively, resulted in changes in the decisionmaking processes that precede crime: benefits were seen as illusory or less important, and perceived risks and losses increased. Further, with successful performance of nondeviant roles and the passage of time, the salience of the ex-convict personal identity decreased and presented few interactional difficulties for these men. Case studies and extensive quotations illustrate these changes.

Book excerpt: "These true crime and murder stories between 1895 and 1910 revolve around one untested lawyer who rises from shady character to preeminent defense attorney in Houston. James Brockman seemingly appears out of nowhere to represent clients from gang leaders to jilted spouses, from wealthy storekeepers to drunken on-duty policemen. There are murder cases of jarring violence in which multiple people are shot down in a train station or a courthouse, and there are cases of uncommon humanity and sadness. The stories of these cases cross racial lines, and several tell an instructive story of the segregated Texas that affected so many lives. His career gained national recognition, including his involvement in the most famous American murder case of the young twentieth century, when he himself was murdered in Houston"--

Book Older Women in the Criminal Justice System

Download or read book Older Women in the Criminal Justice System written by Azrini Wahidin and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2004-06-23 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is life like for the women who grow old behind bars? Azrini Wahidin examines in-depth the experiences and needs of this overlooked group. What happens to the identity and mental health of these women who are closed off from the outside world and without familial networks? What does it feel like to have to carve out a new version of your private self, in a public space? Wahidin shows how ageist and sexist attitudes in criminal procedures and penal policy regulate and discipline the ageing body. She also highlights the failures of practical provisions in prisons to meet the particular needs of this group. Illuminating reading for all those working in the prison services, probation, and the courts, and an important addition to the wider criminology punishment-rehabiliation debate, Older Women in the Criminal Justice System offers a rare view of what happens to the women who grow old in prison.
