Book excerpt: Maybe you've let radio activities lapse but are considering a return. Or are perhaps just curious about what we get up to. Either way Getting back into Amateur Radio is for you. In a clear, conversational style, it brings you up to date with what's changed and what you may have forgotten. In almost no time you'll be tuning the bands even if you don't yet own a receiver. Getting on air is easier and cheaper than ever before, with a huge range of modes, bands and activities to choose from. There's sure to be a specialty that appeals to you, with major recent developments including low-cost digital modes and software defined radios. You may even be able to become relicensed without sitting another test, depending on your country and documentation. New amateur equipment these days is cheaper relative to other things than it was. You might prefer the nostalgia of restoring something you remember. Or the anticipation then joy of making contacts on something you built yourself. Getting back into Amateur Radio discusses all these equipment choices. Then there's antennas. Ideas on what to use and what to avoid are given, with special help for those with limited space. Except in extreme cases you should be able to stick up something that's heard. Forgotten operating procedure? A refresher course on the various way to make contacts is in this book. A big part of amateur radio - then and now - is meeting other amateurs and learning new things. Included are links to ideas and resources that will keep you reading for hours and help you interact with amateurs. Getting back into Amateur Radio is an ebook readable on most devices. It's the author's third, following on from the top-selling Minimum QRP and Hand-carried QRP Antennas titles.

Book Amateur Radio HF Antennas

Download or read book Amateur Radio HF Antennas written by Claude Jollet and published by Claude Jollet. This book was released on with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contents of this book are mostly aimed at the amateur radio beginner and aspiring ones. Therefore, this book provides answers to basic questions like: What is the best HF antenna for my needs and location? What type of stand-alone antenna tuner should I use and which should I avoid? How can I hide my HF antenna from the neighbors and still get acceptable performance from it? What about lightning protection? This book will supply immediately useful answers to the above questions and many more. A properly designed and installed amateur radio HF antenna system can potentially make the humblest ham radio equipment perform like stations worth thousands of dollars. We are confident that the antenna experimenter will find the information given here priceless. Furthermore, any ham radio operator, armed with the information this book contains, will become a much better informed buyer of commercially made HF antenna systems and accessories. This special compendium edition is published in response to ham radio operators who wrote to ask that all the basic information, on and related to amateur radio HF antennas, be made available in one book instead of four, arguing that it would be more convenient. The author and publisher agree. Therefore this edition contains the complete four-book series on Amateur Radio HF Antennas published by Claude Jollet, VE2DPE.

Download or read book Programming Amateur Radios with Chirp written by Brian Schell and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-04 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Back in my day, radios came with a CW key and a frequency knob, and that was all we needed." -Every Old Ham Curmudgeon OK, that's probably a slight exaggeration, but radios were a lot simpler in the "distant" past, when everything was station-to-station, and most communications were some flavor of HF. Nowadays, we have HF, VHF, UHF, digital modes, CW/SSB/AM/FM/MW, repeaters with offsets, repeaters with tones, User IDs, reflectors, talk groups, and who-knows-what coming down the road for next year. There are a lot of modes, tones, offsets, and little nit-picky details that have to go into our radios before we can even make a call. On the other hand, radios, especially handheld models, continue to get smaller, lighter, and generally have fewer physical buttons and controls. This is good in that it keeps costs down, adds to durability, and allows for waterproofing, but it doesn't make programming them any easier. Fortunately, we have computers to handle all the programming stuff for us. Just hook the radio up to the computer, enter in all your information, transfer the frequency and channel data into the radio, and you're good to go. Sounds simple, doesn't it? The problem is that radio manufacturers aren't necessarily good software designers. God forbid you try to program a radio on an Apple or Linux computer using manufacturer's software. None of the companies that make radios include software for these two very common operating systems. None. Even Windows users aren't in the clear. What happens when you try to use the software that came with your radio, when the radio was sold in 2007 and the software was made for Windows XP? Or maybe your radio came with a state-of-the-art serial port connector. That was great... back when all computers had serial ports; now, those are hard-to-find options or require an adaptor. And even though many ham operators enjoy tinkering with computers, there are many who still haven't embraced computers. These things just aren't that simple. Fortunately, there is CHIRP, a free, multi-platform software that works with a large number of common amateur radios. CHIRP even has database tools for setting up local repeaters, National Calling frequencies, MURS, FRS, GMRS, and Marine frequencies- you may not even need to look anything up! If you're already comfortable with using programming software from RT Systems, or have no trouble working with whatever software that came with your radio, than maybe this book isn't for you. If you aren't good with computers, or you're having trouble with the basic process, don't know what all those columns mean, or are otherwise pulling your hair out trying to get your radio programmed, then this book is for you! We'll walk through getting the software installed and set up, connecting your radio with an appropriate cable and communications port, reading template data from the radio, editing that data, and writing that data back out to the radio.

Book Progress Through Struggle

Download or read book Progress Through Struggle written by Henry R. Leggette and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-06-22 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress through Struggle In this story, Progress through Struggle has been an important part of my life. I moved from mule and tractor plowing on my daddy's farm to repairing the control equipment used by air traffic controllers to control aircraft over my daddy's fields. This was accomplished by prayers and believing and loving God! This is the power in prayer! This book is written about an African American man that was supposed to become a cotton and corn farmer. The main part of the story was to demonstrate how the young man did not allow cotton farming, cutting pulp wood and logs, and other things with low-paying jobs stop him. At the time of my boyhood, these were going things in Kemper and Lauderdale counties. I was one that slipped through the crack! Progress through Struggle started long before I was born with my great-grandparents, grandparents, and parents. You will see my grandparents struggle to make ends meet and then almost fail. I will discuss in this book how I got started and struggled as my great-grandparents, grandparents, and my parents and I was determined not to fail. As I started my electronics career in the US Army Signal Corps, I prayed and studied. I didn't want to fail, and to keep from failing, I studied much harder! You will see several times I attempted to learn something and was turned down or said it was not true information. It was much segregation occurring in the late '40s, '50s, and '60s. I was not going to allow that change my course of action. As I was getting older and out of high school, I was turned down many times. After obtaining a job out of high school, I was not allowed to train in a job of the highest pay. That didn't change my mind because God will get me in the right place at the right time. After getting in the US Army Signal Corps was an assignment from God! The US Army was the beginning of my electronics training and career. After receiving the electronics job, I became well qualified because I studied to pass the licenses. After my first electronics job, I was ready to move on because I had master skills within the job. On the second electronics job and after learning it, I was ready to move on after mastering the skills. These jobs were not top-of-the-line electronics analysis or an in-depth level. After receiving an electronics job with FAA, it was a challenge! No, I will not fail because of a challenge, and I studied more, more to pass the courses required. I noticed I am sitting beside electronics technicians and electronics engineers with more experience than me. This required me to study harder because I was doing as well as them and sometimes better, and I was an African American man. I felt some of the FAA managers thought the Africans American would fail. I determined this would never happen in my case! The word was out on me as once I was assigned to courses, I start studying before I depart Memphis for the FAA Aeronautical Academy. Failure was not in my DNA, and I knew the solution was study and more study. I completed 162 weeks of electronics equipment and analysis courses at the FAA Aeronautical Academy. Yes, I believe God was in the plan! Yes! John 3:16! Progress through Struggle became my book title because of the video I saw Christ carrying his cross to where he would be hung and nailed to it. This is why I wanted the word struggle in my title because I did most of my career. I chose the title Progress through Struggle. Read about how my complete career was nothing except Progress through Struggle!
