But change is in the air. Billy discovers he has a natural talent for baseball, especially as a pitcher. Maybe, just maybe, there's more in store for him than life on the farm. But can Billy convince his father of that? Or is he destined to spend the rest of his life pitching nothing but hay?Teenager Billy Baggs is desperately needed on his family's struggling dairy farm, but he's also an extraordinarily gifted natural baseball player. How he struggles to reconcile his father's desire to keep him on the farm with his coach's interest in getting him on the field is at the heart of this ‘meaty story.… The complex characters grow and change in profoundly real ways.''K. ‘[With] flashes of humor, a wealth of lovingly recounted details evokes the difficult daily life on a small dairy farm.''Publishers Weekly. 1994 Best Books for Young Adults (ALA) 1994 Books for the Teen Age (NY Public Library) 1993 "Pick of the Lists" (ABA)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whatever religion may have meant to the boy when he was younger, in the teenage years it takes the form of a personal journey or quest. This journey is related to other aspects of his life and is integral to how he experiences himself and others. The title of this volume--Striking Out--has the connotation of the beginning of a journey that will take the boy in new directions, but it also suggests the baseball metaphor of a batter being called out on strikes. The first sense is positive; the second is negative. Together, they express the anticipatory and hopeful nature of the venture, but also the possibility that the undertaking may evoke feelings of fear, frustration, and failure. By focusing on real-life examples of teenage boys (both historical and contemporary), the book presents five typical manifestations of a boy's vulnerabilities as he sets forth on the journey: the stumbler, the struggler, the straggler, the straddler, and the stranger. It explores the ways in which these vulnerabilities may contribute in positive ways to his personal growth and his religious maturity. Throughout this book Gordon W. Allport's classic text The Individual and His Religion draws attention to the claim that a boy's religious sentiment may play a decisive role in the integration of his personality despite its inevitable disparities and uncertainties, and the real-life examples are presented as evidence that this religious sentiment provides direction and clarity of vision as the boy looks toward the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Israel Strikes-Out! is inspired by the many conflicts occurring in the Middle East over the last ten years. The book deals specifically with problems that have been brewing between Israel and Iraq, especially after the Scud Missile attacks launched by Saddam Hussein against Israel during the Gulf War in 1991. The book explores concerns raised by high-level officials in the Israeli intelligence organization, the Mossad, regarding the threat presented by Saddam Hussein. A Mossad operative, Menachem Yariv, suggests a strategy to insert an operative into the Iraqi military who can get as close as possible to the Iraqi leader so that Israel can make an assassination attempt against him. After a few set backs, the Mossad stumbles on to an Iraqi defector in Amman, Jordan who gets into position in the Iraqi Special Republican Guard to at least make an attempt on Saddam Hussein's life. The effort is not simple and takes a few twists and turns before an attempt is made. The C.I.A. even gets involved when it gets wind of the operation. After entering into a joint operation to strike Iraq, the U.S. and Israel experience several unexpected consequences of the effort that include some disappointments and some successes for both, as well as for the individuals directly involved in the operation.

Book Lucky Little Strikes Out

Download or read book Lucky Little Strikes Out written by Toni Richards and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2013-05-28 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born into an ordinary working class family, William James Little would have expected to live an ordinary life. A childhood accident left him unable to join in the usual outdoor sporting activities, but a couple of chance encounters, in his mid-teens, introduced him to the pleasures of indoor activities, with many willing companions, earning him the added title of “Lucky”. In a five year period from the age of eighteen he lost, through accident or fatal illness, all the members of his family and, most tragic of all, the only girl he ever loved. Although he gained an accountancy qualification he was content to meander through the rest of his life. A casual invitation to a dinner changed that. At the age of thirty eight he was forced into an unwanted marriage, to a girl half his age, part of a family whose business associates were involved with criminal activities. Within two years a number of deaths had occurred and his life, or freedom, was in danger from those associates and as the main suspect of the police. He needed to strike out and away from both organisations but, due to his consideration for the welfare of his wife's young housemaid, who he treated as a daughter, he delayed his departure. With help from unexpected quarters, he managed to escape half way round the world. Following an unexpected meeting he faced his ultimate destiny.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the face of American baseball throughout the world that of goodwill ambassador or ugly American? Has baseball crafted its own image or instead been at the mercy of broader forces shaping our society and the globe? The Empire Strikes Out gives us the sweeping story of how baseball and America are intertwined in the export of “the American way.” From the Civil War to George W. Bush and the Iraq War, we see baseball's role in developing the American empire, first at home and then beyond our shores. And from Albert Spalding and baseball's first World Tour to Bud Selig and the World Baseball Classic, we witness the globalization of America's national pastime and baseball's role in spreading the American dream. Besides describing baseball's frequent and often surprising connections to America's presence around the world, Elias assesses the effects of this relationship both on our foreign policies and on the sport itself and asks whether baseball can play a positive role or rather only reinforce America's dominance around the globe. Like Franklin Foer in How Soccer Explains the World, Elias is driven by compelling stories, unusual events, and unique individuals. His seamless integration of original research and compelling analysis makes this a baseball book that's about more than just sports.
