Met deze woorden rechtvaardigt de Heere Jezus de zondares voor de mensen en openbaart Hij, wat Hij doen kan uit eigen machtsvolkomenheid, waarvan de Farizeeër echter niets had willen zien. Wat ik hier opmerk is niet iedereen terstond duidelijk, namelijk, dat de Heere Jezus hier de zondares rechtvaardigt uit haar werken, en dat Hij op zulk een wijze Zijn eigen machtsvolkomenheid en heerlijkheid openbaart, dat, - terwijl Hij de zondares rechtvaardigt uit haar werken, - Hij haar de vergeving der zonden, dat is de gerechtigheid voor God zonder werken, schenkt.

Zo komt ons in het Evangelie Christus voor als de tweede Adam, zijnde in het Beeld Gods. Wat Christus in de Heilige Geest voor ons van het Beeld Gods heeft en de gelovigen meedeelt, dat heet bij de Apostel Paulus in de Brief aan de Efeziërs en die aan de Colossensen "de nieuwe mens."

Maar duivel en wereld stellen zich ten doel ons moedeloos te maken en het ons te doen opgeven. De Heere daarentegen beproeft ons. En als wij ons er mee verontreinigd hebben, laat ons niet rusten, voordat wij van dode werken gereinigd zijn, met Zijn as en met het heilige water van Zijn ontzondiging. Amen.

Met de levensbeschrijving van Huntington door Thomas Wright wordt deze serie van 10 afgesloten. Wright heeft fijne pen-portretten geschilderd van achttiende eeuwse mannen Gods.

Book excerpt: In the Dutch late modern society, the presence of thriving new evangelical and Pentecostal churches is remarkable against the backdrop of the widespread decline of "traditional", mainstream churches. Using an ethnographic approach, this book examines the experiences of newcomers to contemporary evangelicalism through the lens of two churches: an evangelical seeker church and a neo-Pentecostal, charismatic church. While both churches share an emphasis on conversion, there are substantial differences in their approach to and understanding of the Holy Spirit. By comparing the conversion experiences of newcomers with strategies of conversion employed by each church, this book sheds new light on the profound differences in orientation found within Dutch evangelicalism. Drawing upon theories of the body and embodiment, this qualitative, in-depth study departs from the notion that religion is limited to the mind, involving cognitively affirmed beliefs; conversely, it offers a semiotic approach to understanding religion that takes into account the importance of affects, emotions and desires in processes of conversion. This book also engages in an analytical comparison of the design and use of worship space, worship music and distinct language ideologies used by the two churches to stimulate conversion. It argues that the ways in which newcomers learn conversion, through the Alpha course, baptism and church participation, are anchored in embodied processes and, as such, imply a religious pedagogy of the senses. This study thus marks the need for a more sensorial and embodied approach to understand contemporary forms of Christianity in Dutch society. Miranda Klaver (1962) completed her PhD at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology (Faculty of Social Science) of the VU University Amsterdam. She obtained her Masters degrees in Cultural Anthropology and Theology.

However, from Emma Gonzáles’s three minutes of silence as part of her address at the March for Our Lives, to Trump’s attempts to silence the investigation into his campaign’s alleged collusion with Russia, along with the continuing revelations articulated by silence-breakers of sexual harassment, it is apparent that there are multiple meanings and functions of political silence – all of which intersect at the nexus of power and agency. Dingli and Cooke present a complex constellation of engagements that challenge the conceptual limitations of established approaches to silence by engaging with diverse, cross-disciplinary analytical perspectives on silence and its political implications in the realms of: environmental politics, diplomacy, digital privacy, radical politics, the politics of piety, commemoration, international organization and international law, among others. Contributors to this edited collection chart their approaches to the relationship between silence, power and agency, thus positing silence as a productive modality of agency. While this collection promotes intellectual and interdisciplinary synergy around critical thinking and research regarding the intersections of silence, power and agency, it is written for scholars in politics, international relations theory, international political theory, critical theory and everything in between.
