Download or read book Cowboy Christians written by Marie W. Dallam and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-15 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cowboy Christians examines the long history of cowboy Christianity in the American West, with a focus on the present-day cowboy church movement. Based on five years of historical and sociological fieldwork in cowboy Christian communities, this book draws on interviews with leaders of cowboy churches, traveling rodeo ministries, and chaplains who serve horse racing and bull riding communities, along with the author's first-hand experiences as a participant observer. Marie W. Dallam traces cowboy Christianity from the postbellum period into the twenty-first century, looking at religious life among cowboys on the range as well as its representation in popular imagery and the media. She examines the structure, theology, and perpetuation of the modern cowboy church, and speculates on future challenges the institution may face, such as the relegation of women to subordinate participant roles at a time of increasing gender equality in the larger society. She also explores the cowboy Christian proclivity for blending the secular and the sacred in leisure environments like arenas, racetracks, and rodeos. Dallam locates the modern cowboy church as a descendant of the muscular Christianity movement, the Jesus movement, and new paradigm church methodology. Cowboy Christians establishes the religious significance of the cowboy church movement, particularly relative to twenty-first-century evangelical Protestantism, and contributes to a deeper understanding of the unique Christianity of the American West.

In his younger days, Taylor Callahan didn’t know right from wrong—and didn’t much care either. As a Confederate bushwhacker, renegade outlaw, and all-around hellraiser, he gave the devil himself a run for his money. Most folks figured Taylor would end up swinging from a noose or shot dead in poker game. But somewhere along the road to perdition, he decided to change his wicked ways. To atone for his sins. And to fight the good fight—against the evil that men do. . . . So he became a traveling preacher. But Taylor Callahan is no ordinary preacher. He rides the western circuit looking to help lost souls. But his mission of peace takes a violent turn when he enters the godforsaken town of Falstaff, Texas. Better known to locals as “False Hope,” this one-time paradise has become a purgatory for homesteaders—thanks to a greedy rancher, corrupt mayor, and notorious confidence man. Even so, Callahan vows to keep his Colt .45 in his saddle bag. But when these lowlife devils pull out sticks of dynamite, a man has to do what a man has to do—before the whole town is blown to kingdom come. . . . Live Free. Read Hard.

Book Life Between the Levees

Download or read book Life Between the Levees written by Melody Golding and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 633 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Donald T. Wright Award from the the Herman T. Pott National Inland Waterways Library, a special collection of the St. Louis Mercantile Library Life Between the Levees is a chronicle of first-person reflections and folklore from pilots who have dedicated their lives to the river. The stories are as diverse as the storytellers themselves, and the volume is full of drama, suspense, and a way of life a “landlubber” could never imagine. Although waterways and ports in the Mississippi corridor move billions of dollars of products throughout the US and foreign markets, in today's world those who live and work on land have little knowledge of the river and the people who work there. In ten years of interviewing, Melody Golding collected over one hundred personal narratives from men and women who worked and lived on “brown water,” our inland waterways. As photographer, she has taken thousands of photos, of which 130 are included, of the people and boats, and the rivers where they spend their time. The book spans generations of river life—the oldest pilot was born in 1917 and the youngest in 1987—and includes stories from the 1920s to today. The stories begin with the pilots who were “broke in” by early steamboat pilots who were on the river as far back as the late 1800s. The early pilots in this book witnessed the transition from steamboat to diesel boat, while the youngest grew up in the era of GPS and twenty-first-century technology. Among many topics, the pilots reflect movingly on the time spent away from home because of their career, a universal reality for all mariners. As many pilots say when they talk about the river, “I hate her when I’m with her, and I miss her when I’m gone.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bikers are spiritual people. They may or may not go to church and few will align themselves with any particular religion or denomination. They are nonetheless, deeply spiritual. It comes naturally after riding through some of the most beautiful countryside in the world! Creation cries out to our five senses, daring us to deny the existence of a higher power. Many still do not recognize that there is a personable God who wants to know us intimately. Jesus Christ spoke to the common man and is relevant to the road warriors of today. In the New Testament, Jesus uses simple stories and parables to communicate His message. The Saddlebag Gospels capture these stories, partnering them with tales from the highway, to illustrate the Gospel or "Good News." So, tuck this book into your saddlebags and enjoy a story or two as you have a cup of coffee. Gain a clearer understanding of a God who truly loves you and then ponder the truth of the words you have read as you head out onto the highway.

Book excerpt: Daniel Beauregard is a young Texan drafted into the Confederate Army. He is a crack shot with his Whitworth rifle and becomes a sniper. He meets Quantrill and joins his raiders. He is sent to Texas by Quantrill where he encounters General Robert E Lee. Lee has to return to Virginia in a hurry and he asks Daniel to escort him. Lee is being pursued by a US cavalry troop disguised as Confederates. Daniel decimates the disguised troop with his sniping skills. He realizes that Lee must have been betrayed by someone close to President Jefferson Davis and to track the traitor down he assumes the role of a US Army lieutenant and is quickly promoted to Captain. He discovers the codebook for US Army telegraphic communications and works out who the traitor is. He successfully supplies Lee with much crucial information. Due to the high rate of casualties, Daniel is a brigadier in the US Army when Lee finally surrenders. With the war over, Daniel returns to playing poker; a skill he learned from his father. He travels on a riverboat down to New Orleans. On board he meets Senorita Teresita Rozas who, although he is much taken with her, does not return the compliment. While traveling to Laredo to be married to a rich ranchero, Teresita is captured by Comanche Indians. Daniel, now a very successful poker player, hears of the tragedy and using his special skills, finds and recovers her.

Book excerpt: From ages 17 to 33, Cody Carpenter tries to make a place for his Christian upbringing in the cowboy culture of Texas and New Mexico. With his father's advice to never carry a gun and to read his Bible for help, and his memories of his stern mother's having washed out his mouth with lye soap every time he used a "bad" word such as "heck", he was totally unprepared for the cowboy culture of cussing, gambling, gun fighting, and sex purchasing that existed in Texas and New Mexico at the turn of the 20th Century. The Carpenter Credo, "Work for yourself, never for another: to hire out is but one step above slavery, and the discovery that women were not interested in marrying cowboys, goaded him to try to find ways of becoming a cattle rancher, his own boss with his own herd of registered Hereford cattle. To do so, he had to have help. It came from the C. W. Post, of Post Toasties ad Post City fame. But he had to refuse Post's offer to support his study to be anything he wanted to be: doctor, lawyer, or manager as long as he would find his life's work in the Post Enterprises. Cody's skill in gentling horses contrasted with the cowboy traditions of "breaking" them, setting him apart from the cowboy crew that followed trail drives from Texas to St. Louis and Kansas City. Only the chance to train to be a ramrod saved him from the unbearable ridicule of his trail mates. How he survived to follow his dream is the basis for action, excitement, sadness and laughter that readers will find in this work by a noted poet, author, educator and public speaker who has been named as a Living Legend by the International Biographical Centre in Cambridge, England.

Book Flags on the Bayou

Download or read book Flags on the Bayou written by James Lee Burke and published by Grove Press. This book was released on 2023-07-11 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EDGAR AWARD WINNER FOR BEST NOVEL OF THE YEAR From New York Times-bestselling author James Lee Burke comes a novel set in Civil War-era Louisiana as the South transforms and a brilliant cast of characters – enslaved and free women, plantation gentry, and battle-weary Confederate and Union soldiers – are caught in the maelstrom In the fall of 1863, the Union army is in control of the Mississippi river. Much of Louisiana, including New Orleans and Baton Rouge, is occupied. The Confederate army is retreating toward Texas, and being replaced by Red Legs, irregulars commanded by a maniacal figure, and enslaved men and women are beginning to glimpse freedom. When Hannah Laveau, an enslaved woman working on the Lufkin plantation, is accused of murder, she goes on the run with Florence Milton, an abolitionist schoolteacher, dodging the local constable and the slavecatchers that prowl the bayous. Wade Lufkin, haunted by what he observed—and did—as a surgeon on the battlefield, has returned to his uncle’s plantation to convalesce, where he becomes enraptured by Hannah. Flags on the Bayou is an engaging, action-packed narrative that includes a duel that ends in disaster, a brutal encounter with the local Union commander, repeated skirmishes with Confederate irregulars led by a diseased and probably deranged colonel, and a powerful story of love blossoming between an unlikely pair. As the story unfolds, it illuminates a past that reflects our present in sharp relief. James Lee Burke, whose “evocative prose remains a thing of reliably fierce wonder” (Entertainment Weekly), expertly renders the rich Louisiana landscape, from the sunsets on the Mississippi River to the dingy saloons of New Orleans to the tree-lined shores of the bayou and the cottonmouth snakes that dwell in its depths. Powerful and deeply moving, Flags on the Bayou is a story of tragic acts of war, class divisions upended, and love enduring through it all.
