Book excerpt: The most common job in the United States is a retail salesperson. Retail is one of the largest sources of private employment in the country. The National Retail Federation says the retail industry "directly and indirectly supports 42 million jobs," which roughly amounts to 1 in 4 U.S. jobs. Walmart and Amazon are the two largest private employers in the United States, but these very same companies are racing to automate an increasing number of tasks. They are also driving traditional retail competitors out of business. Millions of jobs are at risk, and it could devastate the economy. I, like millions of others, have worked in retail at different points in my life. The retail and hospitality sectors are where most of us get our first jobs and get a good glimpse into how our free market economy actually works. We see the good, the bad and the ugly; the excess and the inequality of our world. It is a cutthroat industry and to make matters worse; it usually doesn't pay very well. Retail workers are among the top recipients of public assistance.Retail workers' lives are being profoundly impacted by broad economic and technological forces that are beyond their control and are the subject of rigorous debates right now in government, academia, and in the media. This book analyzes the impact of all of these forces. For example, in 2018, we lost almost 100,000 retail jobs, which is about the same amount we saw in 2009 in the aftermath of the financial crisis. This year, the retail sector leads all others in announced job cuts. More stores have closed through the first third of 2019, than all of last year. The future isn't looking brighter. UBS projects 75,000 stores will close by 2026. 25% of malls are expected to close in the next few years. This book explores the current state of the retail industry, and it takes a comprehensive look at its history to illustrate how we got here. It also describes the various efforts underway at retailers that threaten workers and traditional retail competitors. The book also discusses broader economic and technological trends such as e-commerce, digitalization, convergence, artificial intelligence, and automation. Big Tech has increasingly encroached into the industry and is playing a significant role in shaping retail's future.

Book excerpt: "The Man in the Mall" is a book that is designed to supply solutions to an age-old problem that continues to go unresolved. The problem being that there are a lot of women who complain about the fact their man doesn't like to shop at the mall with them or anyone else for that matter! Most of the women that I spoke to came across as very annoyed and frustrated when it came to getting their man in the mall. This anger was the result of year after year of trying to get him to go shopping with her, resulting in her going to the mall by herself. All that any of these women wanted to do was to share this- outside- the- home activity with the man in their life. What a concept! This book attempts to show the highlights and lowlights of the dilemma that the shopping mall has been over the years. What few highlights that the mall has had on relationships between men and women are far out weighed by the negative ones. The history behind this battle goes back to the 60''s when the mall experience started expanding across the country. There are many things that the malls did which resulted in turning men off from shopping. It's this cause and affect that we will be delving into throughout "The Man in the Mall."There are many parts to this amalgam that we commonly refer to as the shopping mall syndrome and history would indicate that it requires a multitude of solutions to remedy. This book will reveal the solutions to such questions about going to the mall such as: When do we go? Should just the two of us go together? What size mall, and what type of store? How long should I keep him there? How do I plan this trip to the mall? Does it matter if the mall is close or far away? What department should I take him to when we get there? Is it all right to include the mall with something else? What do I do if I need a babysitter? Do I need to leave him alone, or do I stay with him? Who should drive the first time?

Book Shopping Centre Marketing

Download or read book Shopping Centre Marketing written by Piotr Krowicki and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-02-26 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are almost 10,000 shopping centres in Europe, and in the United States there are over 100,000, many of which have entered the end-of-life phase due to growing e-retail. Therefore, the issue of how customers perceive the value of these facilities and customer engagement in the relationship with the shopping centre is becoming increasingly important. In this book, the authors evaluate the relationship between the perceived value of a shopping centre and customer engagement by identifying consumer motives, purchase behaviour and responsiveness to marketing strategies. It offers an analysis of the conceptualisation and history of shopping centres and utilises both theoretical and empirical research, presenting results from extensive studies and building a framework for value creation in retail spaces. The book will find a wide audience among scholars interested in marketing and retail management. The practical implications discussed will also provide further research opportunities and insights for astute practitioners.
