Book Combining Acoustic Percussion Performance with Gesture Control Electronics

Download or read book Combining Acoustic Percussion Performance with Gesture Control Electronics written by Andrew J. Angell and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gesture control in music performance utilizing live electronics is a topic receiving much development and exploration. The methods and implementations of gestural control vary. Gesture tracking has been used to directly create sounds as in the case of the well-known electronic musical instrument, the Theremin. It has also been used to control processing of electronics in musical works combining acoustic and electronic sounds. This study is mainly focused on the application of gesture tracking techniques combined with performance on acoustic percussion instruments. The first portion of this study is devoted to examining the methods of gesture control that have been developed in order to establish a context for the subsequent sections. Following this overview, available methods of gesture control and the various sensors used to achieve this control are evaluated to determine which of them can be most effectively combined with performance on acoustic percussion instruments. The pairing of gesture control and percussion is of particular interest because unlike many other acoustic instruments, percussion instruments require large physical movements in order to be played. This characteristic makes percussion instruments uniquely appropriate for performance with gesture tracking technologies. The final section of the paper deals specifically with performance issues and considerations encountered in the percussion solo Percussivometers (2014) by Marcin Pa̜czkowski. The piece utilizes an accelerometer worn on each hand in order to detect the motions of the performer. The gestures are then used to control multiple parameters of audio processing and synthesis. The combination of movements required to execute the performance of the acoustic instruments and those required to control the electronics necessitate special consideration and preparation for an effective performance. This paper attempts to elucidate these considerations and offer guidance to musicians exploring similar performance paradigms.

Book Enhancing the Audience Experience Through Stage Presence and Extramusical Gesture in Solo Marimba Performance

Download or read book Enhancing the Audience Experience Through Stage Presence and Extramusical Gesture in Solo Marimba Performance written by Marco Schirripa and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stage presence and extramusical gesture in live performance play a central role in the audience's experience. While the performer's focus is normally on the quality of sounds being produced, a live performance is a multisensory production, engaging both the eyes and ears. Studies by Schutz and Manning, Broughton and Stevens, as well as Cort McClaren have suggested that marimba players, specifically, have an increased ability to engage audiences, due to the nature of the instrument, by utilizing ancillary physical motion to enhance the observers' perception of note duration and expressive elements. Some consider stage presence to be an intuitive gift possessed by a lucky few; however, in her book Stage Presence, Jane Goodall asserts that deep expression through gesture cannot only be understood, but learned. How, though, can we effectively teach higher-level, subtler elements of stage presence to percussion students? Through observing performances of well- known marimba soloists such as Svet Stoyanov and Naoko Takada, we can grasp and analyze specific extramusical techniques employed by successful performers, providing concrete examples for study and practice. Furthermore, interpreting these observations alongside a synthesis of existing research, we can devise original ideas and methods for percussion students to incorporate into practice and learning, thus developing stronger charisma behind their instruments, and addressing an area of Western music pedagogy that is often lacking, contributing to a growing standard of performing ability throughout the percussion discipline.

Book Encyclopedia of Percussion

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Percussion written by John H. Beck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 727 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Encyclopedia of Percussion is an extensive guide to percussion instruments, organized for research as well as general knowledge. Focusing on idiophones and membranophones, it covers in detail both Western and non-Western percussive instruments. These include not only instruments whose usual sound is produced percussively (like snare drums and triangles), but those whose usual sound is produced concussively (like castanets and claves) or by friction (like the cuíca and the lion’s roar). The expertise of contributors have been used to produce a wide-ranging list of percussion topics. The volume includes: (1) an alphabetical listing of percussion instruments and terms from around the world; (2) an extensive section of illustrations of percussion instruments; (3) thirty-five articles covering topics from Basel drumming to the xylophone; (4) a list of percussion symbols; (5) a table of percussion instruments and terms in English, French, German, and Italian; and (6) an updated section of published writings on methods for percussion.

Download or read book Percussion Pedagogy written by Michael Udow and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-10 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Percussion Pedagogy, author Michael Udow offers a practical guide for students interested in teaching percussion as well as improving their technique. Udow first introduces the bouncing ball system, a technical analogy that teaches students to resist the effects of inertia. Throughout the book, the bouncing ball analogy develops into a core performance principle based on integrated motions resulting in refined tone quality and meaningful musicianship. The book applies this principle to several instruments including snare drum, timpani, marimba, vibraphone, multiple-percussion, tambourine and triangle, bass drum, cymbals, tam-tams, and a variety of Western concert and world percussion repertoire. In particular, Udow addresses the importance of coupling stroke types with stickings to set the foundation for precise rhythmic playing and expressive musicality. Chapters also focus on integrated rhythms, breath, and pulsed rhythms, anatomy and physiological health, psychological health, purposeful listening, and the importance of singing when practicing. Offering solutions to common performance problems, the book's many examples serve as a paradigm for future problem solving. A comprehensive companion website complements Udow's teachings with a wealth of video tutorials and listening examples.

Book Evelyn Glennie Sound Creator

Download or read book Evelyn Glennie Sound Creator written by Georgina Hughes and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2024-09-24 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A case study of a pioneering musician and an interdisciplinary appraisal of the larger social role of the artist. Dame Evelyn Glennie (b.1965) is the world's first full-time solo multi-percussionist, a sound creator and expert listener whose work continues to expand and diversify the remit of the contemporary performer in the twenty-first century. This book presents the first comprehensive study of Glennie's contribution to the evolution of an eclectic, experimental and fascinating instrumental discipline which wilfully eludes standardization. Glennie's sound journey also resonates in contexts extending beyond the discipline of music. She is a prominent female role model, an entrepreneur, a business and brand, a philanthropist and a profoundly deaf performer who has reframed discourse on what it means to truly listen. This book is both a case study of one pioneering musician and an interdisciplinary appraisal of the larger social role of the artist. An important reference source for percussionists, it is also intended to serve as a means of allowing the interested reader to engage with a medium that has become the heartbeat of contemporary culture.
