Book A Psychology of Gesture

Download or read book A Psychology of Gesture written by Charlotte Wolff and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1945, this title was a follow-up to the author’s previous book The Human Hand. This time she looks at the psychology of gesture and its relation to personality. The special place that a psychology of gesture merits is obvious. It permits a direct knowledge of personality without any effort or misleading co-operation on the part of the subject, since it can be applied without his being aware of the fact. The book ‘is constructed on a system of clinical studies and medico-psychological interpretations.’ The author felt that this title must be regarded as a complementary study to her main studies.

Book excerpt: Communication is not always through sound or language. Much can be said with gestures and movement of eyes. In fact, more often than not, it is the body language that 'says' more than words. Now discover all the finer points and the nuances of body language in this masterly work. How does a thumb gesture display dominance, superiority and aggression? How does dilation of eyes send a romantic signal? What does a sideways glance indicate? Given these incredible insights, the book can prove to be of immense use for professionals like advocates, doctors, policemen, judges, salesmen, politicians, judges, executives, bureaucrats and customers etc - in short, people who are essentially in public dealing. But then, it is for all, a true guide for analysing behaviour and attitudes. #v&spublishers

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: th Welcome to the proceedings of the 10 International Conference on Intelligent Virtual Agents (IVA), held 20-22 September, 2010 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Intelligent Virtual Agents are interactive characters that exhibit human-like qualities and communicate with humans or with each other using natural human modalities such as behavior, gesture, and speech. IVAs are capable of real-time perception, cognition, and action that allow them to participate in a dynamic physical and social environment. IVA 2010 is an interdisciplinary annual conference and the main forum for prese- ing research on modeling, developing, and evaluating Intelligent Virtual Agents with a focus on communicative abilities and social behavior. The development of IVAs - quires expertise in multimodal interaction and several AI fields such as cognitive modeling, planning, vision, and natural language processing. Computational models are typically based on experimental studies and theories of human-human and hum- robot interaction; conversely, IVA technology may provide interesting lessons for these fields. Visualizations of IVAs require computer graphics and animation te- niques, and in turn supply significant realism problem domains for these fields. The realization of engaging IVAs is a challenging task, so reusable modules and tools are of great value. The fields of application range from robot assistants, social simulation, and tutoring to games and artistic exploration. The enormous challenges and diversity of possible applications of IVAs have - sulted in an established annual conference.

Book Face to Face Communication over the Internet

Download or read book Face to Face Communication over the Internet written by Arvid Kappas and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-06-16 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social platforms such as MySpace, Facebook and Twitter have rekindled the initial excitement of cyberspace. Text-based, computer-mediated communication has been enriched with face-to-face communication such as Skype, as users move from desktops to laptops with integrated cameras and related hardware. Age, gender and culture barriers seem to have crumbled and disappeared as the user base widens dramatically. Other than simple statistics relating to e-mail usage, chatrooms and blog subscriptions, we know surprisingly little about the rapid changes taking place. This book assembles leading researchers on nonverbal communication, emotion, cognition and computer science to summarize what we know about the processes relevant to face-to-face communication as it pertains to telecommunication, including video-conferencing. The authors take stock of what has been learned regarding how people communicate, in person or over distance, and set the foundations for solid research helping to understand the issues, implications and possibilities that lie ahead.
