Book excerpt: Pour plusieurs grandes villes nord-américaines et européennes possédant un réseau unitaire, les bassins de rétention sont devenus un moyen courant pour diminuer les rejets polluants aux cours d'eau récepteurs et pour régulariser les charges hydrauliques arrivant à la station en temps de pluie. Cependant, des études démontrent que la vidange des réservoirs a un effet négatif sur le procédé de traitement des stations d'épuration. Cette étude vise deux objectifs: (1) caractériser les eaux unitaires à l' entrée et lors de la vidange d'un réservoir de rétention par temps de pluie pour deux paramètres principaux: matières en suspension (MES) et demande chimique en oxygène (DCO) et (2) évaluer des bilans massiques de polluant à l'entrée et à la sortie d'un bassin de rétention pour estimer l'impact sur la station d'épuration des eaux usées. Pour ce faire, une campagne d'échantillonnage dans laquelle la récolte et l'analyse des eaux unitaires à l'entrée et la sortie ont eu lieu dans un réservoir de rétention utilisant un système de vidange par pompage a été réalisée. Les analyses ont démontré une grande variabilité des eaux unitaires dans le réservoir. Ensuite, on a observé que les particules semblent décanter rapidement, car on les retrouve en grandes quantités lors des premières 30 minutes de la vidange par pompage. Finalement, les bilans de masse réalisés démontrent que les réservoirs de rétention emmagasinent une importante quantité de matières, permettant d'éviter d'importantes contaminations des cours d'eau lors d'événements pluvieux. Lors de la première heure de vidange du réservoir, en moyenne 45% de la totalité des MES est envoyé à la station d'épuration des eaux usées.
