Book Die Wende Von Der Aufkl rung Zur Romantik 1760 1820

Download or read book Die Wende Von Der Aufkl rung Zur Romantik 1760 1820 written by Horst Albert Glaser and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 784 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the twelfth to date in a series of works in French or English presenting the epochs and movements of a Comparative History of Literatures in European Languages (Histoire Comparée des Littératures de Langues Européennes). The original intention of the editors was to publish a four-volume history of European literature from 1760-1820, and the first of these volumes, Des Lumières au Romantisme. Genres en Vers, appeared as long ago as 1982. The volumes Genres en Prose and Théâtre are still awaited. In their absence the present volume, Epoche im _berblick, attempts a more comprehensive and rigorous treatment of the period and its historiographical problems than was initially planned, providing the reader with an overview of sixty eventful years of European literary history — years in which German Classicism coincided with the birth, initially in Germany and England, of Romanticism. And at the centre of this turbulent period of European intellectual and literary history stands the French Revolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in Germany, Georg Iggers escaped from Nazism to the United States in his adolescence where he became one of the most distinguished scholars of European intellectual history and the history of historiography. In his lectures, delivered all over the world, and in his numerous books, translated into many languages, Georg Iggers has reshaped historiography and indefatigably promoted cross-cultural dialogue. This volume reflects the profound impact of his oeuvre. Among the contributors are leading intellectual historians but also younger scholars who explore the various cultural contexts of modern historiography, focusing on changes of European and American scholarship as well as non-Western historical writing in relation to developments in the West. Addressing these changes from a transnational perspective, this well-rounded volume offers an excellent introduction to the field, which will be of interest to both established historians and graduate students.

Book Russische Archive und Geschichtswissenschaft

Download or read book Russische Archive und Geschichtswissenschaft written by Stefan Creuzberger and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 2003 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book East German Historians since Reunification

Download or read book East German Historians since Reunification written by Axel Fair-Schulz and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2017-06-29 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surveys how reunification in 1990 impacted historical scholarship in the former East Germany. With German reunification and the demise of the German Democratic Republic in 1990, East German historians and their traditions of historiography were removed from mainstream discourse in Germany and relegated to the periphery. By the mid-1990s, few GDR-trained historians remained in academia. These developments led to a greater degree of intellectual pluralism, yet marginalized many accomplished scholars. East German Historians since Reunification assesses what was gained and lost in the process of dissolving and remaking GDR institutions of historical scholarship. The collection combines primary and secondary sources: younger scholars offer analyses of East German historiography, while senior scholars who lived through the dismantling process provide firsthand accounts. Contributors address broad trends in scholarship as well as particular subfields and institutions. What unites them is a willingness to think critically about the achievements and shortcomings of GDR historiography, and its fate after German reunification.

Book Religion and the Rise of History

Download or read book Religion and the Rise of History written by Leonard S Smith and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2010-07-29 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first intellectual history to study the ideal-type of model-building methodology of Otto Hintze (1861-1940) to Western historical thought and to suggests that Martin Luther also held to a way that was deeply incarnational, dynamic, and/or 'in-with-and-under'. This dual vision and 'a Lutheran ethos' strongly influenced Leibniz, Hamann, and Herder, and was therefore a matter of considerable significance for the rise of a distinctly modern form of historical consciousness in Protestant Germany. Smith's essay suggests a new time period for the formative age of modern German thought, culture, and education: 'The Cultural Revolution in Germany'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English summary: This volume discusses and compares alternative approaches of a trans-national historiography from comparative history to histories of Europe, post-colonial studies, and global history.

Book Historical Atlases

    Book Details:
  • Author : Walter Goffart
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2011-04-15
  • ISBN : 0226300722
  • Pages : 628 pages

Download or read book Historical Atlases written by Walter Goffart and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2011-04-15 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today we can walk into any well-stocked bookstore or library and find an array of historical atlases. The first thorough review of the source material, Historical Atlases traces how these collections of "maps for history"—maps whose sole purpose was to illustrate some historical moment or scene—came into being. Beginning in the sixteenth century, and continuing down to the late nineteenth, Walter Goffart discusses milestones in the origins of historical atlases as well as individual maps illustrating historical events in alternating, paired chapters. He focuses on maps of the medieval period because the development of maps for history hinged particularly on portrayals of this segment of the postclassical, "modern" past. Goffart concludes the book with a detailed catalogue of more than 700 historical maps and atlases produced from 1570 to 1870. Historical Atlases will immediately take its place as the single most important reference on its subject. Historians of cartography, medievalists, and anyone seriously interested in the role of maps in portraying history will find it invaluable.
