Book Patterns of Commoning

Download or read book Patterns of Commoning written by David Bollier and published by Commons Strategy Group and Off the Common Press. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What accounts for the persistence and spread of "commoning," the irrepressible desire of people to collaborate and share to meet everyday needs? How are the more successful projects governed? And why are so many people embracing the commons as a powerful strategy for building a fair, humane and Earth-respecting social order? In more than fifty original essays, Patterns of Commoning addresses these questions and probes the inner complexities of this timeless social paradigm. The book surveys some of the most notable, inspiring commons around the world, from alternative currencies and open design and manufacturing, to centuries-old community forests and co-learning commons - and dozens of others. David Bollier (www.bollier.org) is an American author, activist and independent scholar who has studied the commons for nearly twenty years. Silke Helfrich (commonsblog.wordpress.com) is a German author and independent activist of the commons who blogs at www.commonsblog.de, and cofounder of the Commons-Institut in Germany. Book Reading Germany

Download or read book Reading Germany written by Gideon Reuveni and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By closely examining the interaction between intellectual and material culture in the period before the Nazis came to power in Germany, the author comes to the conclusion that, contrary to widely held assumptions, consumer culture in the Weimar period, far from undermining reading, used reading culture to enhance its goods and values. Reading material was marked as a consumer good, while reading as an activity, raising expectations as it did, influenced consumer culture. Consequently, consumption contributed to the diffusion of reading culture, while at the same time a popular reading culture strengthened consumption and its values. Gideon Reuveni is Director of the Centre for German Jewish Studies at the University of Sussex. He is the co-editor of The Economy in Jewish History (Berghahn, 2010) and several other books on different aspects of Jewish history. Presently he is working on a book on consumer culture and the making of Jewish identity in Europe.

Book excerpt: To Be Continued... explores the world's most popular form of television drama; the soap opera. From Denver to Delhi, Moscow to Manchester, audiences eagerly await the next episode of As the World Turns, The Rich Also Weep or Eastenders. But the popularity of soap operas in Britain and the US pales in comparison to the role that they play in media cultures in other parts of the world. To Be Continued... investigates both the cultural specificity of television soap operas and their reception in other cultures, covering soap production and soap watching in the U.S., Asia, Europe, Australia and Latin America. The contributors consider the nature of soap as a media text, the history of the serial narrative as a form, and the role of the soap opera in the development of feminist media criticism. To Be Continued... presents the first scholarly examination of soap opera as global media phenomenon.

Book Travelling Goods Travelling Moods

Download or read book Travelling Goods Travelling Moods written by Christian Huck and published by Campus Verlag. This book was released on 2012-09 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking at cultural appropriation from around the world, this volume uses the field of cultural studies--heavily influenced by both economics and sociology--as a lens through which to view the paradigm of transcultural consumption. The editors present a variety of consumptive phenomena including: the introduction of Chinese foods to the United States, Ford cars in Germany, and American schoolbooks in the Philippines. Rejecting the idea that these interactions were simply forms of "Americanization," Travelling Goods, Travelling Moods fills a gap in consumer studies and enriches the debate about cultural transfer.

Book Mechanic Accents

Download or read book Mechanic Accents written by Michael Denning and published by London ; New York : Verso. This book was released on 1987 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Factory Firls and Upperclass Seducers; the Molly Maguires and the Knights of Labor; Pinkertons and Tramps; Deadwood Dick and the James Gang: the 'dime novel' was the most widely read literature of the nineteenth century. It was also the contested tarrain of ideological class struggle, between middle-class moralism and the 'mechanic accents' of popular sensationalism. This is the first detailed study of the American dime novel phenomenom in an international context. Theorhetically informed by Marx, Gramsci, Bakhtin and Fredric Jameson among others. Dennings brings to bear and unrivalled knowledge of the primary material. The book explores both the social conditions which led to their popularity and the thematic conventions of the dime novels themselves. He concludes that their central function - representing the utopian longings of their working-class readerships - has been missed by critics of these cheap fictions. Mechanic Accents adds a new dimension to our understanding of the 'artisan republican' ideology of the nineteenth-century working class as well as the origins of the 'culture industry'. Book Story Logic

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Herman
  • Publisher : U of Nebraska Press
  • Release : 2004-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780803273429
  • Pages : 500 pages

Download or read book Story Logic written by David Herman and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring a major synthesis and critique of interdisciplinary narrative theory, Story Logic marks a watershed moment in the study of narrative. David Herman argues that narrativeøis simultaneously a cognitive style, a discourse genre, and a resource for writing. Because stories are strategies that help humans make sense of their world, narratives not only have a logic but also are a logic in their own right, providing an irreplaceable resource for structuring and comprehending experience. Story Logic brings together and pointedly examines key concepts of narrative in literary criticism, linguistics, and cognitive science, supplementing them with a battery of additional concepts that enable many different kinds of narratives to be analyzed and understood. By thoroughly tracing and synthesizing the development of different strands of narrative theory and provocatively critiquing what narratives are and how they work, Story Logic provides a powerful interpretive tool kit that broadens the applicability of narrative theory to more complex forms of stories, however and wherever they appear. Story Logic offers a fresh and incisive way to appreciate more fully the power and significance of narratives.

Download or read book A Philosophy of Mass Art written by Noël Carroll and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a world dominated by mass art. Movies, TV, pulp literature, comics, rock music--both broadcast and recorded--surround us everywhere in the industrialized world and beyond. However, despite the fact that for the majority mass art supplies the primary source of aesthetic experience, the area has been neglected entirely by analytic philosophers of art. In The Philosophy of Mass Art, Noel Carroll, a leading figures in the field of aesthetic philosophy, attempts to address that lacuna. He shows why philosophers have previously resisted and/or misunderstood mass art and he developsframeworks for understanding the relation of mass art to the emotions, morality, and ideology discussing the accounts of such theorists in the field as Collingwood, Adorno, Benajmin, McCluhan, and Fiske. Mixing conceptual analysis and many vivid examples, the author proposes the first significant attempt at a philosophy of mass art in the analytical tradition concluding there are strong grounds for approaching mass art in the same fashion as high art.
