Book Gesammelte Abhandlungen Collected Papers

Download or read book Gesammelte Abhandlungen Collected Papers written by Hellmuth Kneser and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-05-03 with total page 944 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: N 1964 at the World's Fair in New York I City one room was dedicated solely to mathematics. The display included a very at tractive and informative mural, about 13 feet long, sponsored by one of the largest com puter manufacturing companies and present ing a brief survey of the history of mathemat ics. Entitled, "Men of Modern Mathematics," it gives an outline of the development of that science from approximately 1000 B. C. to the year of the exhibition. The first centuries of this time span are illustrated by pictures from the history of art and, in particular, architec ture; the period since 1500 is illuminated by portraits of mathematicians, including brief descriptions of their lives and professional achievements. Close to eighty portraits are crowded into a space of about fourteen square feet; among them, only one is of a woman. Her face-mature, intelligent, neither pretty nor handsome-may suggest her love of sci- 1 Emmy Noether ence and creative gift, but certainly reveals a likeable personality and a genuine kindness of heart. It is the portrait of Emmy Noether ( 1882 - 1935), surrounded by the likenesses of such famous men as Joseph Liouville (1809-1882), Georg Cantor (1845-1918), and David Hilbert (1862 -1943). It is accom panied by the following text: Emmy Noether, daughter of the mathemati cian Max, was often called "Der Noether," as if she were a man.

Book Collected Papers of John Milnor

Download or read book Collected Papers of John Milnor written by John Willard Milnor and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the seventh in the series Collected Papers of John Milnor. Together with the preceding Volume VI, it contains all of Milnor's papers in dynamics, through the year 2012. Most of the papers are in holomorphic dynamics; however, there are two in real dynamics and one on cellular automata. Two of the papers are published here for the first time. The papers in this volume provide important and fundamental material in real and complex dynamical systems. Many have become classics, and have inspired further research in the field. Some of the questions addressed here continue to be important in current research. In some cases, there have been minor corrections or clarifications, as well as references to more recent work which answers questions raised by the author. The volume also includes an index to facilitate searching the book for specific topics.

Book Gesammelte Abhandlungen Collected Papers

Download or read book Gesammelte Abhandlungen Collected Papers written by Oswald Teichmüller and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During his short life Oswald Teichmüller wrote 34 papers, all reproduced in this volume. From the Preface: "Teichmüller's most influential paper was called "Extremale quasikonforme Abbildungen und quadratische Differentiale" (No. 20 in this collection). At the time of its appearance several special cases of extremal problems for quasiconformal mappings had already been solved, and Teichmüller was able to draw on a substantial fund of experience. Nevertheless, it was a remarkable feat to extract the common features of all the known examples and formulate a conjecture, now known as Teichmüller's theorem, which in an unexpected way connects the holomorphic second order differentials on a Riemann surface with the extremal quasiconformal mappings of that surface. The paper of 1939 contains a uniqueness proof, which is essentially still the only known proof, but not yet a rigorous existence proof. This did not prevent Teichmüller from laying the foundation of what has become known as the theory of Teichmüller spaces, a theory that has mushroomed to an extent that could not then have been foreseen. At the same time Teichmüller's work led to a deeper understanding of the fundamental role played by quasiconformal mappings in all of geometric function theory, and it foreshadowed the subsequent development of the theory of quasiconformal mappings in several dimensions... the whole theory of analytic functions of one complex variable has been greatly enriched by the inclusion of quasiconformal mappings, much of it based on Teichmüller's seminal ideas."

Book Ernst Zermelo Collected Works Gesammelte Werke II

Download or read book Ernst Zermelo Collected Works Gesammelte Werke II written by Ernst Zermelo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 803 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ernst Zermelo (1871-1953) is regarded as the founder of axiomatic set theory and is best-known for the first formulation of the axiom of choice. However, his papers also include pioneering work in applied mathematics and mathematical physics. This edition of his collected papers consists of two volumes. The present Volume II covers Ernst Zermelo’s work on the calculus of variations, applied mathematics, and physics. The papers are each presented in their original language together with an English translation, the versions facing each other on opposite pages. Each paper or coherent group of papers is preceded by an introductory note provided by an acknowledged expert in the field who comments on the historical background, motivation, accomplishments, and influence.

Book Collected Papers of Srinivasa Ramanujan

Download or read book Collected Papers of Srinivasa Ramanujan written by Srinivasa Ramanujan Aiyangar and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2000 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of Ramanujan on number theory is without parallel in mathematics. His papers, problems and letters have spawned a remarkable number of later results by many different mathematicians. Here, his 37 published papers, most of his first two and last letters to Hardy, the famous 58 problems submitted to the Journal of the Indian Mathematical Society, and the commentary of the original editors (Hardy, Seshu Aiyar and Wilson) are reprinted again, after having been unavailable for some time. In this, the third printing of Ramanujan's collected papers, Bruce Berndt provides an annotated guide to Ramanujan's work and to the mathematics it inspired over the last three-quarters of a century. The historical development of ideas is traced in the commentary and by citations to the copious references. The editor has done the mathematical world a tremendous service that few others would be qualified to do.
