Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Germany's Vanishing Colonies No doubt every aspect will be taken into con sideration. It will be noted that from the moment Germany decided to establish a colonial Empire her envious hatred of Great Britain took root. She realised that at the British Empire's expense alone could she fully develop her ideal. This feeling has grown and intensified until, in recent years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Germany's Vanishing Colonies In giving his readers a very concise and reliable description of "Germany's Vanishing Colonies," the author performs a useful public service. To the travelled man who may have seen something of these Colonies the work carries conviction; for others it has a useful educative value. Knowledge is essential to sound judgment, and although - thanks to the policy of the late Paul Kruger! - a growing interest in our great Empire has permeated all classes in recent years, anything like a comprehensive knowledge of the local conditions and interests of our 12,000,000 miles of Empire is not to be expected until our schools and universities have added to their curriculum systematic instruction in Imperial history and geography. This book provides important and interesting data on which, at the close of the war, that policy which will determine the status and ownership of Germany's oversea possessions can be built. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German Colonies: A Plea for the Native Races The question of the retention by the Allies or the restoration to Germany of the colonies which the latter has lost, as an immediate consequence of her acts of unprovoked aggression in Europe, is one which will, of course, mainly be determined by the character of the peace eventually secured. Even if the statesmen of Europe and America find themselves at last in a position to dictate terms to Germany, there is a certain danger that they may fail to attach to this matter the import ance which rightly belongs to it. Book Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Classic Reprint

Download or read book Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Classic Reprint written by German Woodhead and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Germany's Colonial Failure Rule Most people recognized, from press reports and other sources of information, that the better kind of German public opinion was thoroughly aroused on the occasion of the Peters and other revelations. But the full extent and character of the attacks by Germans on the German Col onial Office is even now not appreciated as it should be. In certain quarters there is to - day a disposition to regard the evidence of German atrocities in Africa, brought forward by foreign witnesses, as tainted by bias, and to consider that if Germany has erred at all in this matter, her errors have been no worse than those of certain other colonial Powers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From a Vanished German Colony: A Collection of Folklore, Folk Tales and Proverbs From South-West-Africa Once upon a time a certain girl left her father's place and went to the village of Long Snake. Having arrived at the village of Long Snake she remained there, but the owner of the place was absent. The only person present was the mother of the owner of the place. Then in the evening the mother of Long Snake gave that girl some millet that she might grind it. After it was ground she made bread. When it was ready the mother of Long Snake said bring this bread into the house of Long Snake. A short time after that girl went into the house the owner of the place arrived. Then she gave him bread and fermented milk, and he ate. When they had finished the food they went to sleep. Then early in the morning Long Snake went away, because in the daytime he lived in the open country. The girl went to the house of the parents of Long Snake. The mother of Long Snake clothed her with a very beautiful robe. After she was dressed she called for an axe and went to cut firewood. Having arrived in the open fields she did not cut the firewood, but she threw away the axe and ran to her father's place. After she arrived at her father's place her sister enquired where she had got that beautiful robe. Her sister told her, and she said, I am also going to that village. Her sister said, just listen to what I tell you of the custom of that village. But her sister said in reply, I do not want you to tell me anything because you yourself were not warned before you went. Book The Arts and Architecture of German Settlements in Missouri

Download or read book The Arts and Architecture of German Settlements in Missouri written by Charles Van Ravenswaay and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Germans who immigrated to America in the nineteenth century settled in the lower Missouri River valley between St. Charles and Boonville, Missouri. In this magnificent book, which includes some six hundred photographs and drawings, Charles van Ravenswaay examines that immigration--who came, how, and why--and surveys the distinctive Missouri-German architecture, art, and crafts produced in the towns or on the farms of the rural counties of Cooper, Cole, Osage, Gasconade, Franklin, Montgomery, Warren, and St. Charles from the 1830s until the closing years of the century. As the immigrants sought to transplant their native culture to the Missouri backwoods, the compromises they were forced to make with conditions in Missouri produced many fascinating and individualistic structures and objects. They built half-timbered, stone, and brick houses and barns with designs reflecting the traditions of the many German regions from which the builders emigrated. The author's far-reaching study of immigrants' arts and crafts included furniture in traditional peasant designs as well as the Biedermeier and eclectic styles, redware and stoneware pottery, textiles, wood and stone carving, metalwares, firearms, baskets, musical instruments, prints, and paintings and identifies craftsmen working in all of these fields. One chapter is devoted to the objects the immigrants brought with them from the Old World. Added to this new printing of The Arts and Architecture of German Settlements in Missouri is a touching and informative introduction by Adolf E. Schroeder. Schroeder's long friendship with Charles van Ravenswaay allows him to reflect on the vast contributions this author made to our knowledge of Missouri's German culture. Everyone interested in architecture, crafts, or Missouriana will find this book indispensable as they savor van Ravenswaay's excellent presentation of the craftsmen and their products against the background of the aspirations and folkways of a distinctive culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stevenson's Germany: The Case Against Germany in the Pacific This volume concludes the argument against Germany begun in "The New Pacific" and continued through "The Problem of the Pacific." It is also an effort to place Robert Louis Stevenson before the world as an important witness in the case; and substantially it is a Stevenson book. Yet to get Stevenson into the witness box the history of Germany's thirty years of intrigue and tergiversation, before he reached Samoa, has to be told. This has brought other important witnesses forward. Broadly, therefore, the book is an account of Stevenson's Germany - the Germany he discovered in the Pacific, ruthless and grasping. Stevenson did not imagine, even so, that the brutal Power he had found out could prove "insolent" in the true Greek sense of the word, and run headlong to ruin. Insolence, when applied to himself and his writings, was a word which moved his most vehement protest. Sir Sidney Colvin says that the particular protest under this head, in one of the Vailima letters, was not uttered by the true Stevenson. It was not like him; and the shadow of death upon him was the only explanation. But in Stevenson's denial there was a real appreciation of the meaning of insolence. He said he had frankly supposed the word to be tabooed between gentlemen. He did not use it to a gentleman and he would not write it of a gentleman. But during his five years in Samoa he learned the larger lesson. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book An Account of the English Colony in New South Wales Classic Reprint written by David Collins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Account of the English Colony in New South Wales A few changes made by the printers deserve to be noted. Catchwords at the bottom of the page, surviving from the Old days Of parchment rolls, and still (or recently) in use in an Old-fashioned review, disappear between the first and second editions; that was a sensible change that was accomplished in a space Of six years. The frequent use Of capitals in old books, still found in German substantives, is on the decline in the abridged edition, and the Eastern Coast of the first edition becomes the east coast of the second. The substitu tion of governor for Governor suggests transatlantic models. The punctuation, finally, has been improved. Book The German Exodus to England in 1709

Download or read book The German Exodus to England in 1709 written by Frank Kled Diffenderffer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The German Exodus to England in 1709: Massen-Auswanderung Der Pfälzer; Prepared at the Request of the Pennsylvania-German Society The date given is 1526. The colony which settled itself on the shores of the Delaware in 1638, while ostensibly Swedish, was largely composed of Ger mans. Although Gustavus Adolphus and his no less illustrious minister, Axel Oxenstierna, were its pro moters, the great Protestant king begged the Protest ant German princes to permit their subjects to join his scheme of colonization,3 and from the names among those colonists that have come down to us, we are assured that many of them were Germans. The charter accorded the Germans even more favorable conditions than it did to the Swedes themselves. Campanius, the earliest Swedish historian of New Sweden, tells us Germans went in the ship der Vogel Greif which sailed with 50 colonists to establish the first colony on the Delaware. In 1638, Peter Min newit, the first Governor, was drowned in the West Indies. Johannes Printz, a native of Holstein, succeeded him. Although Printz was in the Swe dish service, he was a German nobleman whose full name was Edler von Buchan. With Printz came 54 German families, mostly from Pomerania.4 These facts establish the semi-german character of this so-called Swedish colony.
