Book excerpt: Scholarship on the history of West Germany's educational system has traditionally portrayed the postwar period of Allied occupation as a failure and the following decades as a time of pedagogical stagnation. Two decades after World War II, however, the Federal Republic had become a stable democracy, a member of NATO, and a close ally of the West. Had the schools really failed to contribute to this remarkable transformation of German society and political culture? This study persuasively argues that long before the protest movements of the late 1960s, the West German educational system was undergoing meaningful reform from within. Although politicians and intellectual elites paid little attention to education after 1945, administrators, teachers, and pupils initiated significant changes in schools at the local level. The work of these actors resulted in an array of democratic reforms that signaled a departure from the authoritarian and nationalistic legacies of the past. The establishment of exchange programs between the United States and West Germany, the formation of student government organizations and student newspapers, the publication of revised history and civics textbooks, the expansion of teacher training programs, and the creation of a Social Studies curriculum all contributed to the advent of a new German educational system following World War II. The subtle, incremental reforms inaugurated during the first two postwar decades prepared a new generation of young Germans for their responsibilities as citizens of a democratic state.

Book Education in East and West Germany

Download or read book Education in East and West Germany written by Val D. Rust and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1984. This annotated bibliography is a comprehensive record of English-language materials which focus on Education in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the German Democratic Republic (GDR). It provides an excellent resource to scholars, beginning with a long introductory chapter about the role of education, formal and non-formal, in the two Germanies. The socio-historical context is presented but also the authors offer discussion of educational research trends. The bibliography is structured in useful thematic chapters and within the categories then split into those relating to East and West Germany.

Book Contemporary Issues in Comparative Education

Download or read book Contemporary Issues in Comparative Education written by Keith Watson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1985. In the last two decades education in the Third World has greatly expanded, raising many important issues. Some less developed countries have emulated the West in the style and organisation of their academic systems, hence, it could be said, increasing their dependence. Others have deliberately avoided this path, experimenting with systems more relevant to development and often in a radical way. At a theoretical level, Marxist and neo-Marxist development theorists argue that education systems dependent on the West are evidence of economic dependency and of the correctness of Marxist development theories; while others argue that the evidence points to an interdependent world and that dependency theories do not apply to education. Interestingly two key Marxist Third World Countries, China and Cuba, have very conservative education systems. This book discusses the problems of dependence and interdependence in education throughout the world.

This book was released on 1990 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume presents the contributions to a scientific symposium on the development of comprehensive schools in the Federal Republic of Germany, France, Great Britain, and Sweden, convened by the Max Planck Institute for Human Development and Education, West Berlin in December 1987. While the German case is summarized in one contribution, there are two papers for each of the other countries, presented by experts reporting on the basis of their own empirical research on internal and external consequences of the comprehensive school reform efforts. The issue of social selectivity received special attention.
