Book U Boat 202 the Diary of a German Submarine

Download or read book U Boat 202 the Diary of a German Submarine written by A. Kendall Hall and published by . This book was released on 2017-05-17 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an account of a combat voyage undertaken by the U. 202 during the First World War. Captain von Speigel von Peckelsheim's account is well told, exciting, and with the smattering of propaganda that is to be expected from a book written during the actual war. The Captain recites run-ins with minefields, destoyers, storms, and nerves. This is, overall, an interesting book that offers a rare glimpse into the life the Imperial German Uboat fleet and it contains 9 copyright free images of World War One German uboats.

Book Teddy Suhren Ace of Aces

Download or read book Teddy Suhren Ace of Aces written by Teddy Shuren and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2011-04-20 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reinhard ‘Teddy’ Suhren fired more successful torpedo shots than any other man during the war, many before he even became a U-boat commander. He was also the U-boat service’s most irreverent and rebellious commander; his lack of a military bearing was a constant source of friction with higher authority. Valued for his good humour and ability to lead, his nickname was acquired because he marched like a teddy-bear. Despite his refusal to conform to the rigid thought-patterns of National Socialism, his operational successes protected him, and he found himself accepted in the highest circles of power in Germany. He was one of the lucky third of all U-boat crewmen who survived the war, largely because his abilities led to a senior land-based command. He was also one of the first to publish his reminiscences, his account being typically forthright – its German title, Nasses Eichenlaub, suggesting that although he was decorated with the Oak Leaves, he was always in hot water. He died in 1984 but interest in his career was revitalized by the discovery of photographs documenting one of his operations in U 564, published with great success in 2004 as U-Boat War Patrol by Lawrence Patterson.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last year of World War II the once surface-bound diesel-electric U-boat ushered in the age of ‘total undersea war’ with the introduction of an air mast, or 'snorkel' as it became known among the men who served in Dönitz's submarine fleet. U-boats no longer needed to surface to charge batteries or refresh air; they rarely communicated with their command, operating silently and alone among the shallow coastal waters of the United Kingdom and across to North America. At first, U-boats could remain submerged continuously for a few days, then a few weeks, and finally for months at a time, and they set underwater endurance records not broken for nearly a quarter of a century. The introduction of the snorkel was of paramount concern to the Allies, who strived to frustrate the impact of the device before war's end. Every subsequent wartime U-boat innovation was subordinated to the snorkel, including the new Type XXI Electro-boat ‘wonder weapon’. The snorkel's introduction foreshadowed the nearly un-trackable weapon and instrument of intelligence that the submarine became in the postwar world. This exhaustive study, the first of its kind, draws upon wartime documents from archives around the world to re-evaluate the last year of the U-boat's deployment, all its key technological innovations, the evolving operations and tactics, and Allied countermeasures. It provides answers to many long-standing questions about the last year of the war: How and why did U-boats patrol so close inshore? How effective was acoustic and anti-radar camouflage? Why was U-boat wireless communication so problematic? How did U-boats navigate so effectively submerged? What were the health implications of staying submerged for a month or more? What does an accurate snorkel-configuration look like? This new study is destined to become the authoritative reference for all these issues and many more.

Book When the U Boats Came to America Classic Reprint

Download or read book When the U Boats Came to America Classic Reprint written by William Bell Clark and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from When the U-Boats Came to America Herein I have aimed to present an authentic history of the operations of German submarines in the Western At lantic during the last six months of the World War, to gether with a comprehensive account of their effect upon the United States. Beyond that point, I have not essayed. What the U - boats did in European waters remains for some one else to tell. That I have been able to present the facts accurately and, I trust, completely, is due in no small measure to the splendid cobperation of the Historical Sec tion of the United States Navy Department. To the officers of the Historical Section and to Doctor Albert E. Mckinley, professor of American history at the Univer sity of Pennsylvania, who read the manuscript and made many valuable suggestions for its improvement, goes my sincere appreciation. Book Mediterranean Seafarers in Transition

Download or read book Mediterranean Seafarers in Transition written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-10-17 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume discusses the effects of industrialization on maritime trade, labour and communities in the Mediterranean and Black Sea from the 1850s to the 1920s. The 17 essays are based on new evidence from multiple type of primary sources on the transition from sail to steam navigation, written in a variety of languages, Italian, Spanish, French, Greek, Russian and Ottoman. Questions that arise in the book include the labour conditions, wages, career and retirement of seafarers, the socio-economic and spatial transformations of the maritime communities and the changes in the patterns of operation, ownership and management in the shipping industry with the advent of steam navigation. The book offers a comparative analysis of the above subjects across the Mediterranean, while also proposes unexplored themes in current scholarship like the history of navigation.
