Book excerpt: Paintings by Renaissance masters Lucas Cranach the Elder, Albrecht Durer, and Hans Holbein the Younger are among the works featured in this lavish volume, the first to comprehensively study the largest collection of early German paintings in America. These works, created in the 14th through 16th centuries in the region that comprises present-day Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, include religious images - such as "Virgin and Child with Saint Anne" by Durer and the double-sided altarpiece "The Dormition of the Virgin" by Hans Schaufelein - as well as remarkable portraits by Holbein and the iconic "Judgment of Paris" by Cranach. In all, more than 70 works are thoroughly discussed and analyzed, making this volume an incomparable resource for the study of this rich artistic period.

Book Early German Painting 1350 1550

Download or read book Early German Painting 1350 1550 written by Isolde Lubbeke and published by Philip Wilson Publishers. This book was released on 1991 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: German painting from the fourteenth to the early sixteenth century, under the influence first of Netherlandish art and next of the Italian Renaissance, attained a high point unsurpassed in later times. Nearly all the most important artists of the period are represented here, from Albrecht Dürer and Lucas Cranach the Elder to Hans Maler. Ninety-one works are featured in total. A wide range of artistic production is covered: panels from altarpieces large and small, devotional pictures, mythological allegories, royal and burgher portraits, painted in most major centres from Saxony to the Rhine, Hamburg to the Tyrol. Each painting is reproduced in colour, with paintings on reverses and details also shown in colour. Almost all the most important artists of the period are represented in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection by work of their own or at least of their circle, among them Master Bertram, Johann Koerbecke, Derick Baegert, Michael Wolgemut, Albrecht Durer, and his leading followers Hans Baldung Grien and Hans Suess von Kulmbach, Hans Holbein the Elder and the Younger, Lucas Cranach the Elder and his sons, Bernhard Strigel and Christoph Amberger. Detailed bibliographies and lists of exhibitions of each painting and artists' biographies complete the volume, which will be welcomed not only by all museum and reference libraries, but by everyone involved in study of the subject at all levels.

CHAPTER XXI AUGSBURG HANS HOLBEIN THE ELDER THE rich city of Augsburg was not only the most important art centre in Swabia but was, in all Germany, second only to Nuremberg in its artistic fame and influence. Apparently art did not, however, develop so early there as in Cologne or Nuremberg, for no works remain to us from the fourteenth or even from the first half of the fifteenth century. To the second half of the fifteenth century belongs the painted ceiling which was taken from the guild room of the Weaver's House and is now in the National Museum Munich. It is signed with a jingle: "In fourteen fifty-seven it came, Peter Kaltenhof was the name Of the man who painted the same." The ceiling is divided into narrow sections in which Bible scenes are pictured, with explanatory inscriptions. The figures are small and crowded and the effect of the whole is not particularly decorative. It has been twice painted over; in 1538, by Jorg Breu and again, in 1601, by Johann Herzog, but can hardly have been of much artistic worth at any time. The first great master of painting in Augsburg was Hans Holbein the Elder, who was born about 1460 and whose name appears on the list of painters for the last time in 1524. It is probable that he came, first of all, under the influence of Bartholme Zeitblom of Ulm and then of Italian, particularly of Venetian, painters. Whether or not Holbein the Elder ever visited Venice we do not know, but there seems to be no reason why he should not have done so, as Augsburg, with the princely Fugger family at its head, was always in close intercourse with Italy, and a journey to the city which was the goal of all the German artists of the sixteenth century would not seem a very formidable undertaking. Venetian influence...
