This book delineates the participation of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and its armed force, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (Ukrainska povstanska armiia—UPA), in the destruction of the Jewish population of Ukraine under German occupation in 1941–44. The extent of OUN and UPA’s culpability in the Holocaust has been a controversial issue in Ukraine and within the Ukrainian diaspora as well as in Jewish communities and Israel. Occasionally, the controversy has broken into the press of North America, the EU, and Israel. Triangulating sources from Jewish survivors, Soviet investigations, German documentation, documents produced by OUN itself, and memoirs of OUN activists, it has been possible to establish that: OUN militias were key actors in the anti-Jewish violence of summer 1941; OUN recruited for and infiltrated police formations that provided indispensable manpower for the Germans' mobile killing units; and in 1943, thousands of these policemen deserted from German service to join the OUN-led nationalist insurgency, during which UPA killed Jews who had managed to survive the major liquidations of 1942.

To the Nazi leaders, the Ukrainians were Untermenschen—subhumans. But the rich land was deemed prime territory for Lebensraum expansion. Once the Germans rid the country of Jews, Roma, and Bolsheviks, the Ukrainians would be used to harvest the land for the master race. Karel Berkhoff provides a searing portrait of life in the Third Reich’s largest colony. Under the Nazis, a blend of German nationalism, anti-Semitism, and racist notions about the Slavs produced a reign of terror and genocide. But it is impossible to understand fully Ukraine’s response to this assault without addressing the impact of decades of repressive Soviet rule. On 230.000 Italians left on the Eastern front almost 100.000 did not come back home. Testimonies and memoirs from surviving veterans complement the author's intensive work in Russian and Italian archives. The study examines Italian war crimes against the Soviet civilian population and describes the particularly grim fate of the thousands of Italian military internees who after the 8 September 1943 Armistice had been sent to Germany and were subsequently captured by the Soviet army to be deported to the USSR. The book presents everyday life and death in the Soviet prisoner camps and explains the particularly high mortality among Italian prisoners. Giusti explores how well the system of prisoner labor, personally supervised by Stalin, was planned, starting in 1943. A special focus of the study is antifascist propaganda among prisoners and the infiltration of the Soviet security agencies in the camps. Stalin was keen to create a new cohort of supporters through the mass political reeducation of war prisoners, especially middle-class intellectuals and military élite. The book ends with the laborious diplomatic talks in 1946 and 1947 between USSR, Italy, and the Holy See for the repatriation of the surviving prisoners.

Book excerpt: It is now a little over seventy years since our mother, Sosia Gottesfeld, finished her diary which describes how she, her husband and small child survived the holocaust in Ukraine from 1941 through 1944. The handwritten Yiddish notebook was translated into English shortly after her death in 1990, and the original is now in the Yad Vashem Archives in Jerusalem, in record group 033/1224. The diary describes the conditions under which Jews lived in after the German occupation in 1941 in Skala, a town then on the Eastern border of Poland. Initially, though harassed, brutalized, and systematically degraded with many murdered by the Germans, they still were a community. That changed with the first pogrom in September 1942, when the Germans swept into town and in collaboration with the Ukrainian militia seized all the Jews they could catch. After numerous killings in the streets, the captive Jews were sent to labor or extermination camps. Those who escaped had hid in bunkers, dug outs, and forests. Shortly thereafter, Skala was declared Judenrein (free of Jews). The diary vividly describes going into hiding and the daily torments, hunger, and fear of being discovered by the neighboring Ukrainian villagers, the Ukrainian militia, or German patrols. Every day was filled with apprehension.
