At the same time and even more strikingly FDI in emerging market economies has spurred dramatically. Arising at the end of the 20th century and only known from 19th century trading companies as the East India Company, FDI in developing and emerging markets represents today a new phenomenon. Traditionally, literature has mostly focused on FDI between industrialized countries, and publications on FDI in emerging markets remain relatively sparse. Yet, the rise of large emerging market countries such as China and India has attracted interest of an increasing number of multinational firms (MNFs). The combination of high real economic growth and new FDI regulation in these countries creates a specific environment where MNFs have to adjust corporate strategies for successful market penetration. Further, government s perception of FDI has changed towards increasingly attracting FDI. The present diploma thesis attempts to contribute to the broad issue of understanding why firms become multinational and why they invest in specific countries. Determinants affecting corporate strategies of MNFs and the influence of FDI related economic policies will be specifically analyzed for the case of German MNFs in India for two reasons: Firstly, India is of particular interest as its economy has been opened up remarkably for FDI as a consequence of the economic reform process in the early 1990s. FDI in India, one of the Asian emerging market countries, may therefore suitably represent recent FDI trends to developing and emerging market countries. FDI analysis in these countries often concentrates on China. Given that India is most prominently referred to the Chinese case in terms of economic perspective and potential FDI growth, the analysis allows to draw attention on a second large and prospective FDI player in the region. Secondly, a newly available firm-level dataset from the Deutsche Bundesbank provides detailed data on German FDI in India. The dataset allows to jointly analyze determinants of MNF decisions and host country location factors. The following thesis attempts to provide a (1) profound theoretical background, (2) empirical validation of theoretical predictions using firm-level data and management survey results and (3) implications on corporate strategy and economic policy. Book excerpt: Germany has advanced to the position of a key destination for Indian multinational enterprises in their spirited pursuit of growth opportunities overseas. In 2008, Indian firms invested an estimated amount of US$ 1.8 billion in Germany while 16 acquisitions by Indian firms were monitored, up from 7 in 2007. In fact, Indian FDI stock in Germany seems to have surpassed German FDI stock in India. Our research shows that, as of October 2008, 123 Indian MNEs with 167 subsidiaries were active in Germany and had approx. 20,000 full-time employees on their pay-rolls. However, there has been hardly any independent, academic research, so far, on Indian investments in Germany, especially on the motives, experiences, and employment effects on the host and home economies. The present study, presumably the only empirical study of Indian firms overseas to date, provides unique insights into the motives, operations, experiences, and future plans of Indian firms. It shows that Indian firms have generally performed well and intend to further strengthen their operations, including in research & development activities, in Germany. Nonetheless, firms are also faced with several challenges, including but certainly not limited to cross-cultural issues, which need to be mastered. There are also sectoral differences in the motives, experiences, and location selection criteria of Indian MNEs.

Book excerpt: Internment in so-called “enemy countries” was a frequent occurrence in the twentieth century and created significant obstacles for multinational enterprises (MNEs). This article focuses on German MNEs in India and shows how they addressed the formidable challenge of the internment of their employees in British camps during both WWI and WWII. We find that internment impacted business relationships in India well beyond its endpoint and that the WWI internment shaped the subsequent perception of and strategic response to the WWII experience. We show that internment aggravated existing staffing challenges, impacted the perception of racial lines of distinctions and re-casted the category “European business.” While internment was perceived and managed as a political risk, the case also shows that it created unexpected networking opportunities, generating a tight community of German businesspeople in India.

Book excerpt: This thesis analyzes the motivation and performance of 403 acquisitions made by emerging multinational corporations (EMNCs) in Western Europe and North America between 1994 and 2013. The findings indicate that most EMNCs were motivated to acquire in order to obtain access to the upstream and downstream know-how of their target firms. In addition, the thesis' event study results demonstrate that EMNCs on average generated value for their shareholders with their acquisitions over short periods around acquisition announcement. This result is particularly significant since similar studies on buying firms from developed markets have frequently come to the conclusion that acquirers destroy shareholder value.
