Book excerpt: Germans are the largest ancestral group in Michigan, representing over 2.6 million descendants or 22% of the state’s population. Yet, unlike other immigrant groups, Germans have not retained their linguistic and cultural traditions as part of a distinct ethnic identity. The Bavarian villages of Frankenmuth and Gaylord stand as testaments to the once proud and vigorous German communities that dotted both rural and urban Michigan landscapes. Jeremy W. Kilar explores the social forces that transformed Germans from inward-looking immigrants to citizens in the cultural mainstream. Germans in Michigan is a story of assimilation and renewal and as such reveals the complexities of Americanization and immigration as social forces.

Book excerpt: Germans to America provides both genealogists and researchers of family history with the first extensive, indexed source of German-surname immigrants who came to all ports in the United States between 1850 and 1893. This period witnessed one of the highest rates of German emigration in the nineteenth century. The series reproduces information from the original ship manifest schedules, or passenger lists, filed by all vessels entering U.S. ports. All volumes are arranged in chronological order by each ship's date of arrival. For every passenger list, the following information is provided: ship name, port of departure, port of arrival, date of arrival, and list of German-surname passengers. Ships that departed from German ports or carried passengers who declared themselves to be of German origin are included, with full name, age, sex, occupation, and, when this information is given, country, province or village of origin provided for each emigrant. One of the most important features of this series is the complete index of names at the end of every volume, making it easy to find a particular individual or family name. Germans to America may be ordered by individual volume. Standing orders, which receive a 10% discount, are also welcomed.

Book Prussian Netzelanders and Other German Immigrants in Green Lake Marquette Waushara Counties Wisconsin

Download or read book Prussian Netzelanders and Other German Immigrants in Green Lake Marquette Waushara Counties Wisconsin written by Brian A. Podoll and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now for the first time, German family researchers will have a homeland directory from the heart of America's most German state! Extracted from marriage and naturalization records in these three central Wisconsin counties, this book offers an alphabetized listing of those Prussian and German immigrants who gave their homeland birthplaces. These listings are broken down, within each Wisconsin county, into the Prussian county or other German state from which they came. It is from where they came that makes these Prussian Netzelanders unique, for, unlike other German regional groups, their ancestral homeland no longer exists. To explain why this is so, a background text begins the book by providing details on the linguistic, religious, and socio-economic traits peculiar to this part of the former German Empire. The Slavic influence upon these German families is also duly noted, plus the further migration of some to Minnesota. While other books have touched on passenger lists and Germans in colonial America, this is one of the most detailed breakdowns of immigrants in America's German heartland.
