Book excerpt: During World War II, aviation was among the largest industrial branches of the Third Reich. About 40 percent of total German war production, and two million people, were involved in the manufacture of aircraft and air force equipment. Based on German records, Allied intelligence reports, and eyewitness accounts, this study explores the military, political, scientific and social aspects of Germany's wartime aviation industry: production, research and development, Allied attacks, foreign workers and slave labor, and daily life and working conditions in the factories. Testimony from Holocaust survivors who worked in the factories provides a compelling new perspective on the history of the Third Reich.

Download or read book Hamburg 1940 45 written by Richard Worrall and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-04-25 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to cover the full history of the RAF's air war against Hamburg, one of the most important target cities in Germany. The city of Hamburg became synonymous with the destructive power of RAF Bomber Command when, during summer 1943, the city suffered horrific destruction in a series of four heavy firebombing attacks, Operation Gomorrah. However, few know how varied or long the Hamburg campaign was. In this book, RAF air power expert Dr Richard Worrall presents the complete history of the RAF's air campaign against the city, a campaign that stretched well beyond the devastating fire raids of 1943. Dr Worrall explains how Germany's second city was an industrial centre of immense proportions and proved a consistent target for Bomber Command throughout World War II. It was home to oil refineries, U-boat pens, and ship-building and submarine-building yards, all sustained by a large industrial workforce. Bomber Command evolved tactically and technically throughout the war, and the Luftwaffe's defensive capabilities would do likewise in response. Drawing on a wide range of primary and secondary sources available on this topic, and packed with photos, artwork, maps and diagrams, this is an important new history of the air campaign against the industrial and naval heart of Nazi Germany.

Book Gusstahlfabrik Friedrich Krupp Essen Germany

Download or read book Gusstahlfabrik Friedrich Krupp Essen Germany written by United States Strategic Bombing Survey and published by . This book was released on 1947 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The importance of Gusstahlfabrik Friedrich Krupp, Essen, Germany, commonly referred to as Krupp-Essen, is largely due to its historical role in the development of German heavy industry. It is one of the largest individual plants in the Reich, and the parent company of the vast Krupp industrial combine which includes some 40 wholly owned or controlled operating units. These include coal and iron ore mines, steel plants, coke ovens, steel mills, ship yards, and a variety of light and heavy machine shops ... The plant occupies about 1.7 square miles (1088 acres), near the center of the city of Essen in the Ruhr district and consists of roughly 80 individual buildings varying considerably in size, age and type of construction. One of the most significant features of the plant is that related operations are often widely dispersed over the plant area. This made it difficult to eliminate specific production processes by bombing, but at the same time it put a great strain on inter-plant transportation ... The Krupp-Essen plant in the heart of the city of Essen has been the target of some of the most severe area and precision raids any single objective has ever sustained. The attacks on this plant from 1 January 1943 to 23 October 1944 caused an overall loss of production estimated at approximately 30 per cent. Building damage was severe, damage to heavy machinery slight, damage to light machinery fairly extensive. Recovery varied according to the type of facility damaged, but was usually swift (six to eight weeks) and substantial. Production ceased almost entirely after 23 October 1944, because of loss of electrical power. This was the result of damage to the plant power house as well as the destruction of the sources of purchased power"--Pages 1-2
