Book Geothermal Data of the United States

Download or read book Geothermal Data of the United States written by N. H. Darton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-21 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geothermal Data of the United States: Including Many Original Determinations, of Underground Temperature The purpose of this report is to present all available published data bearing on the rate of increase of underground temperature with increasing depth in the United States, together with several hundred original observations by myself and my associates. A canvass of the governmental, State, and serial publications has yielded many records of temperature of flowing wells and also a few observations made with thermometers in borings and deep mines. Additional data on temperature of flows have been given by correspondents. Some Of the data, especially those relating to flows from wells, may not be reliable, and as a rule these could not be discriminated. Many records are omitted because no facts are available as to the source of flow. During extended investigations of the geology of underground waters in many parts Of the United States I and my assistants have had Opportunity to observe the temperature of flows and to sink thermometers in deep borings. One very important contribution has come from an associate, J. E. Todd, who recorded the temperature of flows from a large number of wells in central-eastern South Dakota. Book Geothermal Gradient Map of the Conterminous United States Second Edition

Download or read book Geothermal Gradient Map of the Conterminous United States Second Edition written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of the Geothermal Gradient Map of the Conterminous United States (Kron and Stix 1982) is described and the changes made since the first edition (Kron and Heiken 1980) are compared. The second edition of the map presents a compilation of over 1700 wells that have been measured for temperature belwo 50 m and whose temperature/depth profiles are linear, or composed of linear segments which reflect changes in the thermal conductivity of the rocks rather than hydrology. The data are displayed at an enlarged scale of 1:2,500,000 and in a new format which shows the location, depth, and gradient of each well in a single color-coded symbol. This edition contains over two times the amount of data shown on the first map and is accompained by a table, listing for each well its location, depth, gradient, heat flow (where available), thermal conductivity (where available), and a reference. Over 200 references have been consulted and are presented with the data.

Book National Geothermal Data System

Download or read book National Geothermal Data System written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geothermal-relevant geosciences data from all 50 states (www.stategeothermaldata.org), federal agencies, national labs, and academic centers are being digitized and linked in a distributed online network via the U.S. Department of Energy-funded National Geothermal Data System (NGDS) to foster geothermal energy exploration and development through use of interactive online 'mashups, 'data integration, and applications. Emphasis is first to make as much information as possible accessible online, with a long range goal to make data interoperable through standardized services and interchange formats. An initial set of thirty geoscience data content models is in use or under development to define a standardized interchange format: aqueous chemistry, borehole temperature data, direct use feature, drill stem test, earthquake hypocenter, fault feature, geologic contact feature, geologic unit feature, thermal/hot spring description, metadata, quaternary fault, volcanic vent description, well header feature, borehole lithology log, crustal stress, gravity, heat flow/temperature gradient, permeability, and feature descriptions data like developed geothermal systems, geologic unit geothermal properties, permeability, production data, rock alteration description, rock chemistry, and thermal conductivity. Map services are also being developed for isopach maps, aquifer temperature maps, and several states are working on geothermal resource overview maps. Content models are developed preferentially from existing community use in order to encourage widespread adoption and promulgate minimum metadata quality standards. Geoscience data and maps from other NGDS participating institutions, or "nodes" (USGS, Southern Methodist University, Boise State University Geothermal Data Coalition) are being supplemented with extensive land management and land use resources from the Western Regional Partnership (15 federal agencies and 5 Western states) to provide access to a comprehensive, holistic set of data critical to geothermal energy development. As of September 2011, we have over 34,000 records registered in the system catalog, and 234,942 data resources online, along with scores of Web services to deliver integrated data to the desktop for free downloading or online use. The data exchange mechanism is built on the U.S. Geoscience Information Network (USGIN, http://usgin.org and http://lab.usgin.org) protocols and standards developed as a partnership of the Association of American State Geologists (AASG) and U.S. Geological Survey.

Book Heat Flow Patterns of the North American Continent

Download or read book Heat Flow Patterns of the North American Continent written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The large and small-scale geothermal features of the North American continent and surrounding ocean areas illustrated on the new 1:5,000,000 DNAG Geothermal Map of North America are summarized. Sources for the data included on the map are given. The types of data included are heat flow sites coded by value, contours of heat flow with a color fill, areas of major groundwater effects on regional heat flow, the top-of-geopressure in the Gulf Coast region, temperature on the Dakota aquifer in the midcontinent, location of major hot springs and geothermal systems, and major center of Quaternary and Holocene volcanism. The large scale heat flow pattern that is well known for the conterminous United States and Canada of normal heat flow east of the Cordillera and generally high heat flow west of the front of the Cordillera dominates the continental portion of the map. However, details of the heat flow variations are also seen and are discussed briefly in this and the accompanying papers.
