Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Georgie, Angel of Cell-Block Six, the author recounts the astonishing story of her mothers little brother, a nine-year-old child in a wheelchair, possessed of an amazing voice. Georgie sang all over St. Louis, at church and at concerts, private gatherings, in salons, and at the Cardinals games, where his counter-tenor voice filled the ball park. His success led him to an explosive situation as witness to a shooting in a lid club and his eventual role as the sole child whose testimony sent adult criminals to prison. The novel is based not only on the family story but on the St. Louis Post-Dispatchs numerous stories and front page photos of Georgie and his unusual fate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bellamy Mansion in Wilmington, North Carolina, is the setting of Tragic Souls of Love and War in the pre-Civil War era, during the Civil War, and after the war. The story is heavily based on facts of four strong women: Sarah Sampson, the Bellamy family’s slave cook; Belle Bellamy, the oldest Bellamy daughter; Mrs. Eliza Bellamy, the wife of Dr. John Bellamy; and Harriet Foote Hawley, the wife of Union general Joseph Roswell Hawley. She was an abolitionist and a first cousin of Harriet Beecher Stowe. The mix of these four women and the fictional and extraordinarily charismatic Braxton Scott twist into a story that captures the loves and sorrows of a tragic time in our history that resembles the classic Gone with the Wind and reminds us of the sad reality of inequality that still exists today.

Book An American Singing Heritage

Download or read book An American Singing Heritage written by Norm Cohen and published by A-R Editions, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-12-20 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition brings together representative transcriptions of folk songs and ballads in the British-Irish-American oral tradition that have enjoyed widespread familiarity throughout twentieth-century America. Within are the one hundred folk songs that most frequently occurred in a methodical survey of Roud’s Folk Song Index, catalogues of commercial early country (or "hillbilly") recordings, and relevant archival collections. The editors selected sources for transcriptions in a broad range of singing styles and representing many regions of the United States. The selections attempt to avoid the biases of previous collections and provide a fresh group of examples, many heretofore unseen in print. The sources for the transcriptions are recordings of traditional musicians from the 1920s through the early 1940s drawn from (1) commercial recordings of "hillbilly" musicians, and (2) field recordings in the collection of the Library of Congress’s Archive of American Folk Song, now part of the Archive of Folk Culture. Each transcription is accompanied by a brief contextualizing essay discussing the song’s history and influence, recording and performance information (whenever available), and an examination of the tune. The edition begins with a substantive essay about the history of folk song recordings and folk song scholarship, and the nature of traditional vocal music in the United States.

Two months ago Dr. Cassandra Hart was forced to kill a man. The man who murdered her best friend, almost killed Detective Mickey Drake, and seriously wounded her. Now she’s back at work in her Pittsburgh ER, but nothing seems the same. When she fears that a young boy is being abused by his “perfect” mother, her friends and colleagues worry that she’s returned to work too soon, imagining dangers that don’t exist. Others accuse her of trying to cover up her own alleged mistakes in the boy’s treatment by making a false report of abuse. Drake’s facing problems of his own, trying to cope with the aftermath of the night two months ago when his passion for Cassie led to a confrontation with a killer. He’s on desk duty, reviewing cold cases, and delves into the homicide case that killed his father seven years ago. But after so long, what good can he do, a cop without a gun? The stakes escalate when Cassie is almost killed and Drake finds evidence that the killer his father was tracking might be planning to strike again—this time targeting a young boy. With the lives of two children at stake, how can they walk away? Praise for the Hart and Drake series “Tensions sizzle in this hot new medical thriller.” —Lisa Gardner, #1 New York Times-bestselling author “Pulse-pounding suspense and hair-raising chills.” —Susan Wiggs, #1 New York Times-bestselling author
