Nestled on the Eastern coast of the Black Sea, the country of Georgia can trace its civilization back into the stories out of Greek Antiquity. Made famous to the Western world of the past through the story of Jason and the Argonauts, the land became known as one plentiful in gold and wine. Although the lands were materially abundant in the stories of the Greek poets, the peoples of the Caucasuses found their wealth through the culture they cultivated over the decades.

Book excerpt: This important book was compiled under the auspices of the Vano Sarajishvili Tbilisi State Conservatoire,International Research Center for Traditional Polyphony in Tbilisi, Georgia. This collection is aimed to those who are interested in Georgian traditional polyphonic singing. It contains seventeen works of seventeen authors, both foreign and Georgian scholars, written throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. Eleven of these works had been published before (but not in English), and six of the articles were written by contemporary scholars for this collection. Problems of the origins, distribution, ethno-cultural interaction with other cultures, identity, scales, harmony, issues of vocal and instrumental polyphony are discussed in these articles. Georgian traditional polyphony has long since become a symbol of the complexity that traditional musical culture can achieve in creating sophisticated forms of multi-part singing. In 2001 UNESCO proclaimed Georgian polyphonic singing a "Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity". Earlier, in 1977 Georgian song Chakrulo was included among the very limited amount of information about the Earth and its diverse cultures that was launched into space. Georgia is becoming one of the international centers of the study of the traditional polyphony.

Book excerpt: Vocal polyphonic music, as one of Georgia's primary cultural exports that has been gaining popularity in the world, plays a big part in the effort of creating a marketable Georgian identity - an effort tied to the Georgian state's desire to join the EU and get away from its Soviet past. Whether state-sponsored or private, a number of institutions have risen to prominence in recent years, all proclaiming to be dedicated to the preservation and popularization of Georgian folklore. While their contribution to these missions is extensive, their policies and practices often carry an eerie resemblance to the Soviet attempts at selective promotion of indigenous cultures. By the very nature of their structure, these institutions impose a particular idea of power and hierarchy: wherein a few select people control the distribution of finances, information, and other resources, performers adhere to dress codes, and ensembles have centralized leadership. My argument in this work is that this idea of power and hierarchy is at odds with the practice of Georgian polyphonic singing, which involves (usually) three distinct voices coming together, without designating a "chief" or "main" one among them.
