Book Research in Georgia

Download or read book Research in Georgia written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is one of the most comprehensive guides to research sources in Georgia and especially the Georgia Department of Archives and History. Mr. Davis has painstackenly surveyed the records and their locations and compiled a book that is a watershed for Georgia historians and geneaalogists. It is written as a guide, leading him or her step-by-step to the records - many of which are unknown to even the most experienced researcher due to long years of negelect. The inclusion of an outline to the county material on microfilm can help many a travlerto realize that a trip to the archives is more useful than one to the county courthouse. I can think of no better book with which people can use as a beginning tool for research in Georgia - Ken Thomas, Genealogy, The Atlanta Constitution.

Book Index to Georgia s Federal Naturalization Records to 1950 Excluding Military Petitions

Download or read book Index to Georgia s Federal Naturalization Records to 1950 Excluding Military Petitions written by Linda Woodward Geiger and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-04-20 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This index of federal naturalizations in the state of Georgia refers to two documents associated with the naturalization process, "Declaration of Intention" and "Petition for Naturalization." Prior to September 1906, this process could be accomplished in any court of record. Subsequent to that date the process was transferred to the Federal Court System. Since the initial publication of this book in 1996, the federal naturalization records have been digitized and are available on ancestry.com. The introduction to this volume contains a detailed explanation on the naturalization process and will help researchers better understand the digitized records. The name index allows researchers to easily pick up alternate spellings of names and to verify the existence of a naturalization record for an individual.

Book 1864 Census for Re Organizing the Georgia Militia

Download or read book 1864 Census for Re Organizing the Georgia Militia written by and published by Genealogical Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1864 Census for Re-organizing the Georgia Militia is a statewide census of all white males between the ages of 16 and 60 who were not at the time in the service of the Confederate States of America. Based on a law passed by the Georgia Legislature in December 1863 to provide for the protection of women, children, and invalids living at home, it is a list of some 42,000 men--many of them exempt from service--who were able to serve in local militia companies and perform such homefront duties as might be required of them. In accordance with the law, enrollment lists were drawn up by counties and within counties by militia districts. Each one of the 42,000 persons enrolled was listed by his full name, age, occupation, place of birth, and reason (if any) for his exemption from service. Sometime between 1920 and 1940 the Georgia Pension and Record Department typed up copies of these lists. Names on the typed lists, unlike most of the originals, are in alphabetical order, and it is these typed lists which form the basis of this new work by Mrs. Nancy Cornell. Checking the typed lists against the original handwritten records on microfilm in the Georgia Department of Archives & History, Mrs. Cornell was able to add some information and correct certain misspellings. She also points out that no lists were found for the counties of Burke, Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, Dooly, Emanuel, Irwin, Johnson, Pulaski, and Wilcox.

Book De Renne

    Book Details:
  • Author : William Harris Bragg
  • Publisher : University of Georgia Press
  • Release : 1999
  • ISBN : 9780820320892
  • Pages : 792 pages

Download or read book De Renne written by William Harris Bragg and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 792 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of what is known today of Georgia history was preserved through the diligent efforts of a single family. From Wormsloe, their ancestral plantation near Savannah, the De Rennes built an extraordinary collection of books and manuscripts on the history of the state and the Confederacy, much of which is now housed at the University of Georgia and the Museum of the Confederacy. This book focuses on their efforts in the years 1827 through 1970, conveying the passion and purpose with which they pursued their avocation. William Harris Bragg has mined a vast array of archival sources to present this engaging narrative of the De Renne family. He tells how wealthy bibliophile and philanthropist G. W. J. De Renne and his wife, Mary, set the precedent for the family’s accumulation of historic material, how their son established the Wymberley Jones De Renne Georgia Library that bears his name, and how his children in turn expanded upon that tradition. The De Rennes also printed limited editions of primary historical materials beginning with the series known as the Wormsloe Quartos. Bragg’s account of three generations of the De Renne family vividly records their achievements as it reconstructs their life at Wormsloe and follows them in their travels around the world. It provides glimpses into the dynamics and behavior of one of Georgia’s oldest and most prominent families and the evolution of the southern aristocracy. The book draws on newly available material to expand significantly on Ellis Merton Coulter’s 1955 work, Wormsloe, and provides the most complete account to date of the De Rennes. Beyond the story of the De Renne family, Bragg also reveals much about the history of collecting and of the antiquarian book trade, as well as of the evolution of Georgia historical documentation. Appendix material includes genealogical tables and lists of collections and publications, making De Renne: Three Generations of a Georgia Family an invaluable source for all scholars and aficionados of southern history.
