Book excerpt: Georges Guynemer, Knight of the Air by Henry Bordeaux The Chevalier of Flight: Captain Guynemer by Mary R. Parkman 'Until one has given all, one has given nothing' Georges Guynemer This special Leonaur edition contains two accounts of one the most most honoured French fighter aces of the First World War, Georges Guynemer. Born into a wealthy Parisian family, Guynemer was a sickly child and was initially rejected for military service, but through determination and perseverance he was first accepted as a mechanic in the opening year of the war and later qualified as a pilot flying a Morane-Saulnier aircraft in Escadrille MS. 3. In 1915 the squadron was renamed Escadrille N. 3 and re-equipped with Nieuport 10 fighter aircraft. It was while flying the Nieuport that Guynemer became an acknowledged 'ace' and established himself as a hero of his nation. By the end of 1916 he had 25 'kills' to his credit and his face-and his famous aircraft with the stork insignia-had became iconic. Lionised by the press and now influential, Guynemer involved himself in aircraft development and in 1917, flying a Spad VII-one of the aircraft he had helped improve-he was the first pilot to shoot down a German Gotha GIII heavy bomber. By July 1917 Guynemer had chalked up 50 kills. Shy and embarrassed by the attention he received as a national figure, Guynemer struggled with his fame, but this, ironically, made him even more attractive to a public eager for a 'chevalier' to divert their thoughts from the industrial scale, grinding attrition of the trenches. Georges Guynemer was reported lost in action over Belgium in September 1917 at the age of 22. Awarded many of his country's highest honours he remained an inspirational figure to the French throughout the Great War. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

This book was released on 2012-04-12 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title of “Ace” in the air war above France in the First World War was the coveted dream of all the daring flyers of the French, German British, and other armies. It was not an easily won honour, in order to be so recognized the airman would have to down five of the enemy aircraft, these experts of the air war would become the most lethal exponents of the airwar. However should the pilot achieve this rare feat he could become a national hero, feted by his comrades, respected and feared by his opponents. Even among these elite sky warriors there are a handful of men that stand out, German’s Red Baron, von Richtofen, Canada’s Billy Bishop, Britain’s Albert Ball; but to all France Georges Guynemer was their idol and lionized as a national hero. With his 53 victories he stands in the first rank of the fighter aces of the First World War. One of France’s foremost aeronautical authors Jacques Mortane undertook to write the biography of this legend, recording his famous victories and exploits with the Stork squadron and seeking to shed light on the shy national hero. Author — Mortane, Jacques, 1883-1939. Translator — Levy, Clifton Harby, 1867- Text taken, whole and complete, from the edition published in New York, Moffat, Yard & Company, 1918. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guynemer, the Ace of Aces In the pages which I shall consecrate to the glorious hero of whom France is so proud, my aim will be to make him known just as he was in the aerodromes. It is the fighter, the master of technique whom we study in one. I shall add not a phrase to what the Ace of Aces was willing to confide to me in the conversations held with him. He agreed to tell me of his pursuits, and to give me his opinions, while I took notes scrupulously, writing at his dictation. I did not trust my memory, leaving to Guynemer's own words all of their flavor. My part was limited to being rather a faithful secretary to him who consented to speak to me about his profession with open soul. Book excerpt: Capturing the hearts of a beleaguered nation, the fighter pilots of World War II engaged in a kind of battle that became the stuff of legend. They cut through the sky in their P-38s to go one-on-one against the enemy—and those who survived the deadly showdowns with enough courage and skill earned the right to be called aces. But two men in particular rose to become something more. They became icons of aerial combat, in a heroic rivalry that inspired a weary nation to fight on. Richard “Dick” Bong was the bashful, pink-faced farm boy from the Midwest. Thomas “Tommy” McGuire was the wise-cracking, fast-talking kid from New Jersey. What they shared was an unparalleled gallantry under fire which won them both the Medal of Honor—and remains the subject of hushed and reverent conversation wherever aerial warfare is admired. What they had between them was a closely watched rivalry to see who would emerge as the top-scoring American ace of the war. What they left behind is a legacy of pride we will never forget, and a record of aerial victories that has yet to be surpassed anywhere in the world.
