Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from George Tyrrell's Letters To many the name of George Tyrrell is SO familiar that any account of his life may seem superfluous - to many, but not to all. Furthermore, the years of stress through which the world has lately passed have dulled the memory of many events that stood out conspicuously in times when thought was not at a discount and action all that signified. The story of the, Modernist movement was hardly ended before the Great War began a crisis during which deeper and more abiding interests were inevitably suspended in favour of ques tions materially urgent and imperative. But [even were Modernism generally remembered, Modernism is far from being all in the life of Tyrrell. Indeed it may be said that Modernism did a certain amount of injustice to his memory, in so far as it overshadowed other sides of his work and his character. He was a Modernist, and he gave a portion of his life to the prosecution of that movement but he was other things besides -he was a man of unusual spiritual insight of moral acumen of keen human sympathy and psychological Skill of literary power and percep tion; of abounding humour and fun. He had been a missioner and a confessor before he was a writer; he was the friend of many for whom his orthodoxy or unorthodoxy had little importance. Book Between Two Worlds

Download or read book Between Two Worlds written by Nicholas Sagovsky and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1983-09-08 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tyrrell and Arnold take their place in a peculiarly English theological tradition. Appreciation of this tradition is of the first importance in understanding the background to contemporary Anglicanism and contemporary Catholicism. More than that, it offers a way of bridging the gulf between the world that to Tyrrell and Arnold was dead or dying and the world of the late twentieth century with all the questions that they began to perceive - two prophetic individuals unable to live with the Church of their day and unable to find the Church of the future.

Book The Letters of Baron Friedrich Von H gel and Maude D Petre

Download or read book The Letters of Baron Friedrich Von H gel and Maude D Petre written by Friedrich Freiherr von Hügel and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the first decade of the twentieth century the Roman Catholic Church was shaken to its core by an intellectual reform movement, 'modernism', seeking radical changes in the traditional approaches to biblical studies, philosophy and theology. The repercussions of the church authorities' condemnations and repression of the so-callled modernist heresy persisted for more than half a century. Then, liberated by Pope John XXIII, himself suspected of being a modernist, the Second Vatican Council created the possibility for many modernist ideas to resurface and initiate a renewal of the church in the modern world. The present work contains the integral correspondence of the leader of this modernist movement, Baron Friedrich von Hugel to Maude D. Petre along with her two extant letters to him. The correspondence offers a unique glimpse into the history of the movement and an example of how its leading protagonist promoted the novel ideas of many of the seminal thinkers of the time among his friends and colleagues. Sadly, the letters also depict the often unchristian nature of the authorities' response and the subsequent suffering inflicted on some of the church's most critical but faithful and enlightened members.

Book A Companion to Jesuit Mysticism

Download or read book A Companion to Jesuit Mysticism written by Robert Aleksander Maryks and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-03-06 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Companion to Jesuit Mysticism, Robert A. Maryks provides thirteen unique essays discussing the Jesuit mystical tradition, a somewhat neglected aspect of Jesuit historiography that stretches as far back as the order’s co-founder, Ignatius of Loyola, his spiritual visions at Manresa, and ultimately the mystical perspective contained in his Spiritual Exercises. The volume’s contributions on the most significant representatives of the Jesuit mystical tradition—from Baltasar Álvarez to Louis Lallemant to Hugo Makibi Enomiya-Lassalle—aim to fill this lacuna in Jesuit historiography. Although intended primarily as a handbook for scholars seeking to further their own research in this area, the volume will undoubtedly be of interest to scholars and students of Jesuit studies more broadly.
