Book Catching the Wind

Download or read book Catching the Wind written by Francis E. Hutchinson and published by Penang Institute. This book was released on 2012 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: However impressive the economic success of Penang has been over the past four decades, structural conditions in the region call for a fundamental reconfiguration of this Malaysian state’s competitive advantage. In the 1970s, the ageing entrepôt transformed itself into a manufacturing hub for the electronics industry and a well-known tourist site. This outward-looking model of economic growth has underpinned Penang’s economic development up until the present. The question that now arises is whether Penang’s present mode of development will continue to be effective, or whether it will have to transform itself. First, Malaysia in general, and Penang in particular are caught in a middle-income trap. Second, while the evolving weight of the global economy is shifting towards Asia, many of its emerging powers are competing with Penang in areas where it formerly excelled. Third, Penang is a state within a federation, and its capital, George Town, is a secondary city. Neither can rival Kuala Lumpur in terms of size or facilities, and thus must offer investors other attributes. Effectively meeting these challenges while retaining Penang’s vibrant and living culture are the key issues that are dealt with in this second volume of the Penang Studies Series.

Book excerpt: In George Town, the capital of Penang, the Pearl of the Orient and a Malaysian island hugely popular with domestic and international tourists, trishaws ply the streets ferrying tourists between colonial buildings, temples, food spots and bars. The more enterprising trishaw drivers offer sightseeing with sex, sometimes with unexpected results. Through candid interviews with sources in the sex industry, as well as Penang’s trishaw riders, the author discovers shocking scams, pitiful repentances and happy-ending massages that don’t end happy. Penang Undercover also looks beyond Penang to the neon lights of neighbouring Hatyai and Bangkok in Thailand to expose the shenanigans of mamasans, bargirls, dream-makers and liars. Finally, the author unearths a few hidden nuggets from his hometown of Kuala Lumpur and the subject of his fi rst two books in the Undercover series. Typical of his style, this book is written with wit and candour.

Download or read book Early History of Penang Penerbit USM written by Editor Muhammad Haji Salleh and published by Penerbit USM. This book was released on with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History states and defines rights. A history that is one-sided, that tends to be on the side of the colonizers and disregards the actual truths is an erred discourse, which nullities the rights, self-identity and pride of a nation This book aims to correct the lopsidedness and neglect. Penang and Seberang Perai have kept ancient proofs of population long before the arrival of Francis Light. For the sake of uncovering a history that reaches further in the past and unearths more truths, this book presents three scholars and well-known experts who reveal these early proofs. They are Dr Mokhtar Saidin, an archaeologist, Dr Mahani Musa, a historian and Dr Noriah Mohamed., a linguist. Their researches begin from the early proofs and lead us to the earlier decade of the arrival of East India Company.

Book Penang Trams Trolleybuses Railways

Download or read book Penang Trams Trolleybuses Railways written by Ric Francis and published by Areca Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Which city once had the smallest trolley-bus in the world? Where do you find the first funicular railway in Southeast Asia? How do you recognize a trolley-bus pole? Where is Tramway Road?" "With over 100 old photographs, maps and illustrations, this book gives an overview of the various forms of public transport used in George Town from 1880s to 1963, and the role this transport played in the development of the growth of George Town and Penang." "Penang was one of the first urban centres in Southeast Asia to operate steam trams, horse trams, electric trams and trolleybuses. When the Municipal Commission established its own electric supply, it took over the tram service and started the electric trams in George Town in 1906. This gave the local population excellent public transport around George Town, with one line going up to Ayer Itam. In the late 1920s, the Municipality replaced trams with trolley-buses, experimenting for a while with re-conditioned double-deckers from London Transport!" "The Municipality also operated two railways - firstly, the Penang Hill Railway which was considered an engineering marvel when it was first built, and secondly, the electric railway which transported supplies and tin ingots for Penang's foremost smelting works."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Colonial buildings and monuments in George Town symbolise new offspring of an architecture style ‒ neoclassical architecture blended with the local style ‒ due to its adjustment to the tropical climate. Written in a clear and engaging style, the text includes a wealth of information, and is attractively formatted and enhanced with 143 colorful photographs and illustrations. The book begins with the introduction of George Town as a historic city, and its transformation into one of the world heritage sites. Chapters are then arranged according to building categories. Each provides overview of historical events that influenced the architectural styles of the respective buildings. For anyone interested in architecture, as well as those who are planning to visit this uniquely multicultural heritage city, Architecture and Heritage Buildings in George Town, Penang is an essential reading.

Book excerpt: In August 2007, the month when Malaysia celebrated 50 years of independence from colonial rule, two historic cities on the Straits of Malacca were assessed for inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This book explores the cultural, social and physical history of one city and its multi ethnic population, tracing its urban evolution, the cultures of its population and the reflection of their cultures in their architecture and urban forms. It also investigates national and international influences - including those of heritage conservation bodies, and examines their impact on cultural perceptions, in order to unravel the identity reconstructions that have taken place over the nation's first 50 years.

Book Penang and Its Region

Download or read book Penang and Its Region written by Neil Khor and published by NUS Press. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its beginnings in the late eighteenth century, the vibrant colonial port of Penang attracted a diverse range of peoples, enabled pioneering commercial enterprises, and fomented inter-ethnic collaboration and inter-cultural borrowings. The island came to be known as the 'Pearl of the Orient', and for many travellers it was their first port of call in Southeast Asia. In the early nineteenth century, Singapore displaced Penang in international trade, but the island remained a major focus of regional trade. For this reason, the story of Penang's relations with the Malay Peninsula and other parts of Southeast Asia reveal a great deal about conditions within the region.
