Book George Peele

  • Author : David Bevington
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2017-03-02
  • ISBN : 1351933914
  • Pages : 471 pages

Download or read book George Peele written by David Bevington and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Bevington's volume on George Peele looks at the literary achievement of that dramatist and author, who was born in London some time around 1556-8, was educated at Oxford, and returned to London to become a prolific writer until his death in 1596. He died at the age of forty, in poverty, and was never far from the threat of debtors' prison throughout his adult life. Peele, like Greene and Marlowe, was caricatured in his immediate afterlife as the embodiment of a popular and thriving literary culture in London of the late sixteenth century: a world that was competitive and relentlessly unforgiving in its economic pressures, but also colourful, adventuresome, and vital. This volume collects together for the first time the best contemporary published work on Peele by a group of renowned scholars. They discuss Peele's Lord Mayor's Pageants, Court Entertainments, occasional poems, and his plays The Arraignment of Paris, The Old Wives Tale, The Battle of Alcazar, Edward I, David and Bathsheba, and Titus Andronicus. The essays are accompanied by David Bevington's substantial introduction which discusses Peele's life and works, particularly in the context of the other five University Wits.

Book Jewish and Christian Voices in English Reformation Biblical Drama

Download or read book Jewish and Christian Voices in English Reformation Biblical Drama written by Chanita Goodblatt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-01 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English Biblical drama of the sixteenth century resounds with a variety of Jewish and Christian voices. Whether embodied as characters or manifested as exegetical and performative strategies, these voices participate in the central Reformation project of biblical translation. Such translations and dramatic texts are certainly enriched by studying them within the wider context of medieval and early modern biblical scholarship, which is implemented in biblical translations, commentaries and sermons. This approach is one significant contribution of the present project, as it studies the reciprocal illumination of Bible and Drama. Chanita Goodblatt explores the way in which the interpretive cruxes in the biblical text generate the dramatic text and performance, as well as how the drama’s enactment underlines the ethical and theological issues as the heart of the biblical text. By looking at English Reformation biblical drama through a double-edged prism of exegetical and performative perspectives, Goodblatt adds a new dimension to the existing discussion of the historical resonance of these plays. Jewish and Christian Voices in English Reformation Biblical Drama integrates Jewish and Christian exegetical traditions with the study of Reformation biblical drama. In doing so, this book recovers the interpretive and performative powers of both biblical and dramatic texts.

Book Reading the Jewish Woman on the Elizabethan Stage

Download or read book Reading the Jewish Woman on the Elizabethan Stage written by Michelle Ephraim and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2008 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book-length examination of Jewish women in Renaissance drama, this study links lesser-known dramatic adaptations of the biblical Rebecca, Deborah, and Esther with the Jewish daughters made famous by Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare on the popular stage. Drawing upon original research on early modern sermons and biblical commentaries, Michelle Ephraim here shows the cultural significance of biblical plays that have until now received scant critical attention.
