Book George Matheson and Mysticism A Biographical Study

Download or read book George Matheson and Mysticism A Biographical Study written by Scott S. McKenna and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-02-04 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study on the life and mystical thought of George Matheson. In the closing decades of the nineteenth century, Matheson was a Church of Scotland minister at Innellan on the west coast of Scotland. Matheson was of Highland descent and blind from the age of eighteen. His spiritual journey included a distressing experience of atheism, the attraction of Hegelian idealism, and through the practice of silence and meditation on Scripture, he wrote of the Eternal through mystical union. Matheson has much to offer those interested in the inner life, not least Christians in the Presbyterian tradition.

Excerpt: ... assume that negative attitude towards the current method of regarding Divine, truth which was adopted by many of those who came under the influence of Caird's teaching. The Professor himself, it need hardly be said, never wavered in his allegiance to what is truly essential in the Christian religion. Indeed, he was the helper of those who had the power to follow him in his search after eternal truth; and the inspiration of his teaching and character was deeply felt by those who sat under him. But a spirit of negation began to possess not a few of those who at the time were affected by the new outlook upon theology. Matheson never fell under its spell, nor had he as a student become thoroughly imbued with the positive spirit which reconstructed afresh the forms of belief after criticism had done its work with them. He was evidently content for the time being to walk in the old paths, and to light them up with flashes of imagination and poetry. He could not, however, live long in a frail house of this kind; the crash was bound to come, and when it did come his theological tabernacle was a mass of ruins. Ten years before his death, referring to this experience, which could never be forgotten by him, he said: At one time, with a great thrill of horror, I found myself an absolute atheist. After being ordained at Innellan, I believed nothing; neither God nor immortality. I tendered my resignation to the Presbytery, but to their honour they would not accept it, even though a Highland Presbytery. They said I was a young man, and would change. I have changed. I do not think that the matter ever came to so acute a crisis ecclesiastically. There is no evidence that the subject came officially before the court, although he undoubtedly was quite...

Acts ii. 17,19 v. "And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God ... I will show wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath." "In the last days." I always thought wonder belonged to the first days--the days of our youth. I thought it was a mark of ignorance, a sign of immaturity. Is not the great fear of our time just the fear that wonder will be killed by knowledge? We are afraid that, as we learn, we shall cease to admire, and that we shall see less of God the more we know of man. But here, the wonder comes at the end, not at the beginning; it belongs to the last days. I am told to look upon the sense of mystery, not as something that fades with the past, but as something that dawns with the future. I am told to view it, not as a feeling which knowledge shall explode, but as a sentiment which knowledge shall foster. I am told to think of it, not as the product of ignorance, but as a thing which THE LATER GLORY. 239 ignorance has retarded and which perfect science will reveal. I used to think the stones of my temple had fallen from heaven. But now I have found the quarry from which they were taken; and, behold, it is on earth. What then? Shall my wonder die? Nay; rather, it ought to be for the first time born. There is no wonder where there is no workmanship. To fall from heaven is less marvellous than to grow from earth. My temple has not come down readymade; but it has been made in a manner more wonderful still. It has risen through the efforts of myriad souls--each laying a separate stone, each unconscious what or where he laid. Each comes to build for his own end; and, lo, at the close, there is one harmonious structure, offering room to all. This shall be, this ought to be, the wonder of the...
