Book Orphan Trains

Download or read book Orphan Trains written by Stephen O'Connor and published by HMH. This book was released on 2014-11-04 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The true story behind Christina Baker Kline’s bestselling novel is revealed in this “engaging and thoughtful history” of the Children’s Aid Society (Los Angeles Times). A powerful blend of history, biography, and adventure, Orphan Trains fills a grievous gap in the American story. Tracing the evolution of the Children’s Aid Society, this dramatic narrative tells the fascinating tale of one of the most famous—and sometimes infamous—child welfare programs: the orphan trains, which spirited away some two hundred fifty thousand abandoned children into the homes of rural families in the Midwest. In mid-nineteenth-century New York, vagrant children, whether orphans or runaways, filled the streets. The city’s solution for years had been to sweep these children into prisons or almshouses. But a young minister named Charles Loring Brace took a different tack. With the creation of the Children’s Aid Society in 1853, he provided homeless youngsters with shelter, education, and, for many, a new family out west. The family matching process was haphazard, to say the least: at town meetings, farming families took their pick of the orphan train riders. Some children, such as James Brady, who became governor of Alaska, found loving homes, while others, such as Charley Miller, who shot two boys on a train in Wyoming, saw no end to their misery. Complete with extraordinary photographs and deeply moving stories, Orphan Trains gives invaluable insights into a creative genius whose pioneering, if controversial, efforts inform child rescue work today.

Book The Effects of Early Social Emotional and Relationship Experience on the Development of Young Orphanage Children

Download or read book The Effects of Early Social Emotional and Relationship Experience on the Development of Young Orphanage Children written by The St. Petersburg-USA Orphanage Research Team and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-04-27 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Undertaken at orphanages in Russia, this study tests the role of early social and emotion experience in the development of children. Children were exposed to either multiple caregivers who performed routine duties in a perfunctory manner with minimal interaction or fewer caregivers who were trained to engage in warm, responsive, and developmentally appropriate interactions during routine care. Engaged and responsive caregivers were associated with substantial improvements in child development and these findings provide a rationale for making similar improvements in other institutions, programs, and organizations.

Download or read book The Shekinah Glory written by George Miller and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2007-09 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some times the Shekinah Glory is mentioned in Bible study books, or theological works. It is referred to as the "Glory Cloud" that covered the Ark and the Tabernacle. This study of the Shekinah Glory of God begins in Genesis and continues through to the book of Revelation. From the beginning of the Bible to the end, the Shekinah Glory is manifested. The reader will be impressed at the last revelation of the Shekinah when he sees how much God the Father loves His children whom He has redeemed through the cross of Christ. The Glory of the Shekinah is seen coming down from heaven to dwell with His children on earth for ever. This manifestation of the Father is a new teaching to many Bible students. It is the prayer of the author that this book will be able to bring glory and praise to God. Amen! The author of this book did not take the well traveled road. He came out of the slums of south Baltimore. He started studying the Bible when he was a teenager and the Bible has been his life's work. He never finished high school and yet went to seminary first, and then attended college. He graduated summa cum laude, and first in the class from Nyack College, to get his Masters degree. He has been a pastor for many years. The Shekinah Glory was his seminary thesis. George Miller dedicates this book to his wife, Edwina, who asked him many times to publish his thesis. He has tried to simplify the subject so that beginners as well as the more mature theologians may enjoy this study and learn from it. May the Lord bless the reading of this book.

Download or read book Orphan Trains written by Marylin Irvin Holt and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1994-02-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "From 1850 to 1930 America witnessed a unique emigration and resettlement of at least 200,000 children and several thousand adults, primarily from the East Coast to the West. This 'placing out,' an attempt to find homes for the urban poor, was best known by the 'orphan trains' that carried the children. Holt carefully analyzes the system, initially instituted by the New York Children's Aid Society in 1853, tracking its imitators as well as the reasons for its creation and demise. She captures the children's perspective with the judicious use of oral histories, institutional records, and newspaper accounts. This well-written volume sheds new light on the multifaceted experience of children's immigration, changing concepts of welfare, and Western expansion. It is good, scholarly social history."—Library Journal
