Book George Eliot s Spiritual Quest in Silas Marner

Download or read book George Eliot s Spiritual Quest in Silas Marner written by J. H. Mazaheri and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11-30 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on K. Barth’s definition of faith and R. Bultmann’s existentialist theology, J. H. Mazaheri has attempted to reveal G. Eliot’s profound religious and spiritual quest by focusing on the short but powerful novel, Silas Marner. The critic believes that her thought in the area of religion and theology has not been appreciated enough by critics, and that a postmodern reading is necessary in order to understand it. So, through a close textual reading, the author shows not only the affinities G. Eliot had with Coleridge and Wordworth, already mentioned by others, but also with Schleiermacher and Kierkegaard. The novelist clearly distinguishes between religion and superstition: if she strongly rejects the latter, she believes in the reality and good aspects of the former. Indeed she demythologizes Christianity in a positive way, and implicitly offers a new definition of religion. On the other hand, although she admired and translated Feuerbach’s The Essence of Christianity, she differed from him as much as she did from Strauss, whom she also translated. This essay on Silas Marner proposes, thus, a new approach to G. Eliot’s thought, while stressing the qualities of her art, especially in the way she uses allegory, irony, and free indirect speech.

Book excerpt: Silas Marner: The Weaver of Raveloe is the third novel by George Eliot, published in 1861. An outwardly simple tale of a linen weaver, it is notable for its strong realism and its sophisticated treatment of a variety of issues ranging from religion to industrialisation to community. The novel is set in the early years of the 19th century. Silas Marner, a weaver, is a member of a small Calvinist congregation in Lantern Yard, a slum street in Northern England. He is falsely accused of stealing the congregation's funds while watching over the very ill deacon. Two clues are given against Silas: a pocket knife, and the discovery in his own house of the bag formerly containing the money. There is the strong suggestion that Silas' best friend, William Dane, has framed him, since Silas had lent his pocket knife to William shortly before the crime was committed. Lots are drawn in the belief - shared by Silas - that God will direct the process and establish the truth, but they indicate that Silas is guilty. The woman Silas was to marry breaks their engagement and marries William instead. With his life shattered, his trust in God lost and his heart broken, Silas leaves Lantern Yard and the city for a rural area where he is unknown.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silas Marner is a novel by George Eliot. An outwardly simple tale of a reclusive weaver, in its strong realism it represents one of Eliot's most sophisticated treatments of her attitude to religion. In Silas Marner, Eliot combines symbolism with a historically precise setting to create a tale of love and hope. This novel explores the issues of redemptive love, the notion of community, the role of religion, and the status of the gentry and family. While religion and religious devotion play a strong part in this text, Eliot concerns herself with matters of ethics, and it is clear that for her, ethics exist apart from religion. On the surface, the book has a strong moral tract; the bad character, Dunstan Cass, gets his just deserts, while the pitiable character, Silas Marner, is ultimately richly rewarded, and his miserliness corrected. Eliot's text includes several pointed criticisms of organized religion, the role of the gentry, and the negative impacts of industrialisation.

Book excerpt: Accused of a crime he didn't commit and unjustly forced from his home town, Silas lives a reclusive and godless life, finding love and companionship only in material objects. It will take the theft of his gold and the discovery of an abandoned infant to remind him of the importance of human relationships and faith. Mary Ann Evans, writing under her pen name of George Eliot, carefully weaves the interaction of plot and character, and, in so doing, depicts Silas Marner's redemption and rebirth through his love and protection of the orphaned girl and the possibility of losing her. Throughout the book, Eliot also takes the opportunity to voice her feelings about industrialization, religion, and social class distinctions.

Book excerpt: To Lose a Fortune and Gain a Treasure A child, more than all other gifts That earth can offer to declining man, Brings hope with it, and forward-looking thoughts." The novel presents the story of a Silas Marner, a weaver in Raveloe who loses his fortune and gains a treasure. It may appear to have been written with spontaneity and ease, but, in fact, it is brilliantly crafted. Its narrative voice, unlike that in Eliot's longer works of fiction, is restrained, telling the story simply and swiftly, making pithy comments only occasionally. Silas Marner: the Weaver of Raveloe is a realistic novel centering on a humble weaver who renounces religion and humanity after members of his church find him guilty of a crime he did not commit. After he moves to a new town, he suffers another reversal when a thief steals a small fortune he had amassed from his weaving trade. The rest of the novel focuses on his transformation from an embittered man into a happy and beloved member of his community after he adopts a two-year-old girl who mysteriously wanders into his home on a snowy New Year's Eve. This large print edition of George Eliot's classic masterpiece is printed on high quality paper with a beautiful, durable cover. Book excerpt: In the days when the spinning-wheels hummed busily in the farmhouses-and even great ladies, clothed in silk and thread-lace, had their toy spinning-wheels of polished oak-there might be seen in districts far away among the lanes, or deep in the bosom of the hills, certain pallid undersized men, who, by the side of the brawny country-folk, looked like the remnants of a disinherited race. The shepherd's dog barked fiercely when one of these alien-looking men appeared on the upland, dark against the early winter sunset; for what dog likes a figure bent under a heavy bag?
