Book excerpt: Excerpt from George Eliot a Critical Study of Her Life, Writings and Philosophy It has been suggested to me that I have not done perfect justice to George Henry Lewes, especially in what I say of his books on the Spanish drama and the life of Goethe. I have carefully reconsidered what I wrote of him, and find no occasion for any change of judgment, though two or three words might properly give place to others of a more appreciative meaning. My book has met with much greater praise than I could have expected. Its errors, I have no doubt, are quite numerous enough; and yet I venture to think the main thought of the book is correct. Book George Eliot for the Twenty First Century

Download or read book George Eliot for the Twenty First Century written by K. M. Newton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-13 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Eliot for the Twenty-First Century reexamines Eliot two hundred years after her birth and offers an innovative critical reading that seeks to change perceptions of Eliot. Tracing Eliot’s literary reception from the nineteenth century to the late twentieth and early twenty-first century, K. M. Newton frames Eliot as an unorthodox radical and considers the philosophical, ethical, political, and artistic subtleties permeating her writings. Drawing from close readings of her novels, essays, and letters, Newton offers a new critical perspective on George Eliot and reveals her enduring relevance in the twenty-first century.

  • Author : Pauline Nestor
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing

Download or read book George Eliot written by Pauline Nestor and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2002-05-30 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Eliot was one of the great thinkers of her time, a figure central to the main currents of thought and belief in the nineteenth century. Yet when this distinguished public intellectual turned to fiction writing at the age of thirty-six, she regarded it not as a lesser pursuit, but as the distillation of all of her knowledge and ideas. For Eliot, fiction enabled the consideration of life 'in its highest complexity', and had the capacity not merely to elicit, but actually to create, moral sentiment by surprising readers into the recognition of realities other than their own. In this new study, Pauline Nestor offers a challenging reassessment of Eliot's contribution to the critical debates, both of her age and of her own era. In particular, she examines the author's literary expolration of ethics, especially in relation to the negotiation of difference. Nestor argues compellingly that, through a reading of their sophisticated drama of otherness, Eliot's novels can be seen as freshly relevant to contemporary theoretical debates in feminism, moral philosophy, post-colonial studies and psychoanalysis. Covering the writer's complete body of major fiction, this is an indispensable voume for anyone studying the work of one of the most important and influential novelists of the nineteenth century.

Book George Eliot s Life Complete

Download or read book George Eliot s Life Complete written by George Eliot and published by 谷月社. This book was released on 2016-01-15 with total page 781 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chapter I. In the foregoing introductory sketch I have endeavored to present the influences to which George Eliot was subjected in her youth, and the environment in which she grew up; I am now able to begin the fulfilment of the promise on the titlepage, that the life will be related in her own letters; or, rather, in extracts from her own letters, for no single letter is printed entire from the beginning to the end. I have not succeeded in obtaining any between 6th January, 1836, and 18th August, 1838; but from the latter date the correspondence becomes regular, and I have arranged it as a continuous narrative, with the names of the persons to whom the letters are addressed in the margin. The slight thread of narrative or explanation which I have written to elucidate the letters, where necessary, will hereafter occupy an inside margin, so that the reader will see at a glance what is narrative and what is correspondence, and will be troubled as little as possible with marks of quotation or changes of type. The following opening letter of the series to Miss Lewis describes a first visit to London with her brother: [Sidenote: Letter to Miss Lewis, 18th Aug. 1838.] Let me tell you, though, that I was not at all delighted with the stir of the great Babel, and the less so, probably, owing to the circumstances attending my visit thither.

Book George Eliot s Moral Aesthetic

Download or read book George Eliot s Moral Aesthetic written by Constance Fulmer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-11-07 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Eliot’s serious readers have been intrigued by the fact that she declared that she had lost her faith in God and had renounced her hope for a traditional Christian heaven and yet she continued to preach her own version of morality in everything she wrote, to hope for an immortality which allowed her to join an invisible choir which would influence generations to come, and to be concerned about the moral growth of her characters. This is only one of the many compelling contradictions in her life and in her artistry. This volume aims to investigate Eliot’s ethical and artistic principles by defining her moral aesthetic as it relates to her self-concept and exploring Eliot’s narrative decisions and the decisions made by her characters and the circumstances which prompt those choices. Dr. Fulmer includes chapters on her clerical figures and other types of individuals such as musicians, and politicians. Dr. Fulmer also illuminates the paradoxes and contradictions in George Eliot’s life and in her philosophy by focusing on Eliot's use of animals, mirrors, windows, jewelry, wills and other tangible images in her poetry as well as her novels. George Eliot’s Moral Aesthetic contends that everything about her moral philosophy is related to her writing and that everything about her writing is related to her moral philosophy.
