Book George Dergalis Fantasy Drawings and Paintings from the John D Merriam Collection

Download or read book George Dergalis Fantasy Drawings and Paintings from the John D Merriam Collection written by George Dergalis and published by . This book was released on 2010-07-31 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book focuses on one hundred and seven of the one hundred thirty two drawings and paintings from the million dollar Merriam collection. The unique thirty year plus relationship between the artist and the collector is described from their first encounter in Rockport, Massachusetts to the eulogy given by Keeper of the Prints Sinclair Hitchings at the library. As with all living artists in his collection, John Merriam insisted on meeting Dergalis in person. There developed a long standing agreement that upon completion of each new drawing, George would call John at any hour to arrange for a private viewing. In John's Beacon Hill brownstone, filled with works of art, the collector would probe the inner sanctum of the artist's mind in an effort to understand the artistic process from conception to fruition. The intense question and answer sessions ultimately pushed the artist to a better understanding of self. John guided George to explore the full potential of his technical ability and creative powers. Thus was born a series of intricate surreal drawings composed of thousands of tiny dots which told an intimate story of fantasy and desire.

Book excerpt: Saga is the first major monograph of the work of Arno Minkkinen, published to accompany a series of exhibitions in the U.S. and Europe. Offering a comprehensive retrospective of this vital photographer's work, Saga gives new meaning to the self-portrait. Eschewing digital manipulation, Minkkinen juxtaposes his own body (and occasionally those of his family) with details in the landscape so that, in whole or in part, the human form collaborates with nature to create a work of lyrical beauty. Essays by a stellar roster of writers and scholarsnovelist Alan Lightman and critics A.D. Coleman and Arthur Dantoexplore the inner world of Minkkinen's pictures. Surreal and humorous, documentary and artful, the photographs of Arno Minkkinen leave the viewer moved and captivated.

Book The Architect s Brother

Download or read book The Architect s Brother written by Robert ParkeHarrison and published by Twin Palms Pub. This book was released on 2000 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert ParkeHarrison creates constructed photographs which tell stories of loss, struggle, and personal exploration within landscapes scarred by technology and over-use. He attempts to metaphorically and poetically link his laborious actions, idiosyncratic rituals and strangely crude machines into tales about our modern experience. The mythic world he creates mirrors our world, where nature is domesticated and controlled. The scenes display futile attempts to save or rejuvenate nature. His 'everyman' character patches holes in the sky, creates rain machines, chases storms to create electricity, communicates with the earth to learn its needs. Within these scenes, he creates less refined, less scientific, more ritualistic and poetic possibilities to work with nature rather than destroying it. The nature of his images and the process of their construction are interdisciplinary, embodying aspects of theater, sculpture, and painting, photography and performance. None of the images are real in the factual sense, but they are treated as precious talismans of a lost moment, a documented super-reality, whose message, like that of a myth, transcends the small realities of the day to day world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sculptor Alexander Calder (1898-1976) and the painter Joan Miró (1893-1983) first met in Paris in 1928 and became life-long friends. This original and visually stunning book places the mobile sculptures of Calder alongside the poetical paintings of Miró and provides fresh insights into the visual dialogue between these two artists. What did the painter see in the sculptor? What did the sculptor see in the painter? These questions are answered through an extensive examination of the exchange of artwork and correspondence between the two artists, maintained across two continents and through the turmoil of war.

Arranged both chronologically and thematically, this lushly illustrated book focuses on an artist doing important work in the fields of queer theory, craft making, and personal geography. -- Exhibition: Phoenix Art Museum, Arizona, United States (14.10.2017-28.01.2018) / Everson Museum of Art, New York, United States (09.02-13.05.2018).

Book excerpt: This national group thematic exhibition examines the many uses of sentimental imagery by contemporary artists. Traditional signifiers of the sweeter, more tender emotions (hearts, flowers, birds, domestic arts and interiors, decorative motifs, etc.) were abhorrent to twentieth-century Modernism, but today artists employ them to celebrate the positive emotional spectrum, to evoke memory and nostalgia, and to ironically attack sentimentality as an inauthentic and damaging simplification of the human condition.
