Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from George Bernard Shaw: His Plays The Origin of Species the fight against orthodoxy, custom, and authority was perennially and necessarily a losing one. On the side of the defense were ignorance, antiquity, piety, organization, and respectability - twelve inch, wire-wound, rapid-fire guns, all of them. In the hands of the scattered, half-hearted, unorganized at tacking parties there were but two weapons - the blow pipe of impious doubt and the bludgeon of sacrilege. Neither, unsupported, was very effective. Voltaire, who tried both, scared the defenders a bit and for a while there was a great pother and scurrying about, but when the smoke cleared away the walls were just as strong as before and the drawbridge was still up. One had to believe or be damned. There was no compromise and no middle ground. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Bernard Shaw Classic Reprint written by Holbrook Jackson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-21 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bernard Shaw For I think our experiences tally on this point, that the author of Man and Superman, like the author of Hamlet, are both more talked about than studied, and I am quite convinced that as the touchstone to the worthiness of our Leeds friends was their attitude towards the former, so the ratio of individuals towards the modern movement of ideas must be gauged by the intelligence Of their attitude towards the same person. If Bernard Shaw's work were merely unique, we could all afford to laugh and pass on but it is a great deal more than that, it stands in the same relation to our day as the work of Swift did to his day, or Carlyle's to his, and people to-day who are ready to admit the insufficiency of intelligent discrimination then are reminded not to repeat a similar error in judgment now. Bernard Shaw can read diamond type with his left eye at a distance of twenty eight inches; that he can hear a note the pitch of which does not exceed vibrations per second; that, when he sits down upon a chair, the distance between the crown of his head and the seat is 3 feet, inches. Book excerpt: Excerpt from George Bernard Shaw: A Critical Study Birds of paradox is unsound. Paradox is truth disguised as untruth and the disguise must be some thing subtler than exaggeration and more frivolous than honest error. But most of what is regarded as paradox in Shaw's personal expressions is either a, strategical exaggeration of what he believes to be a! Book George Bernard Shaw His Life and Works

Download or read book George Bernard Shaw His Life and Works written by Archibald Henderson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-20 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from George Bernard Shaw, His Life and Works: A Critical Biography (Authorized) Moms: than six years ago I conceived the idea of writing a book about Bernard Shaw. The magnitude of the undertaking and the elusiveness of the subject, had I realized them then in their full significance, might well have made me pause. My earliest interest in his work, aroused by his thoughtful laughter and piqued by his elfish impudence, convinced me that this te markable talent was like no other I had known. In characteristic style, Mr. Shaw once gave the following fantastic account of the evolution of the present work. A young American professor, Shaw explained, wished to write a book about him. Originally, he thought of beginning his task by writing an article for a daily newspaper. But so rapidly did the material grow that he soon saw the necessity of expanding the newspaper article into a long essay for a monthly review. When the essay was completed, in view of the mass of material in his hands, it appeared totally inadequate to express what he really wished to say about Bernard Shaw. It then occurred to him to write a short book entitled G. B. S. Alas This plan had also to be relinquished, for it was now manifest that in no such small compass was it possible to do justice to his subject. At last he hit upon the brilliant scheme of his final adoption: he would write a history of modern thought in twenty volumes. After considering the forerunners of his hero in the first nine teen volumes, he would devote the twentieth solely to the treatment of George Bernard Shaw. Book excerpt: Arms and the Man: Large PrintBy George Bernard ShawIndeed he knows no more about the dramatic art than, according to his own story in "The Man of Destiny," Napoleon at Tavazzano knew of the Art of War. But both men were successes each in his way--the latter won victories and the former gained audiences, in the very teeth of the accepted theories of war and the theatre. Shaw does not know that it is unpardonable sin to have his characters make long speeches at one another, apparently thinking that this embargo applies only to long speeches which consist mainly of bombast and rhetoric. There never was an author who showed less predilection for a specific medium by which to accomplish his results. He recognized, early in his days, many things awry in the world and he assumed the task of mundane reformation with a confident spirit. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Book Plays by George Bernard Shaw

Download or read book Plays by George Bernard Shaw written by George Bernard Shaw and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2004-08-03 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Bernard Shaw demanded truth and despised convention. He punctured hollow pretensions and smug prudishness—coating his criticism with ingenious and irreverent wit. In Mrs. Warren’s Profession, Arms and the Man, Candida, and Man and Superman, the great playwright satirizes society, military heroism, marriage, and the pursuit of man by woman. From a social, literary, and theatrical standpoint, these four plays are among the foremost dramas of the age—as intellectually stimulating as they are thoroughly enjoyable. “My way of joking is to tell the truth: It is the funniest joke in the world.”—G. B. Shaw With an Introduction by Eric Bentley and an Afterword by Norman Lloyd

Download or read book Bernard Shaw the Man and the Mask Classic Reprint written by Richard Burton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bernard Shaw the Man and the Mask The following pages attempt to give within limits somewhat sharply drawn a definite idea of the personality, the work, and the meaning of a dramatist of our day who has gained distinction, invited abuse, and secured in excess the dubious compliment of misrepresentation. SO far as the book can claim to be a contribution to the subject, it may base it on the succinctness of the presenta tion; the analyses of the plays in chronologic sequence, technic as well as teaching and literary quality in mind; and upon the chapters in which respectively Shaw's craft as an artist of the thea tre and his intellectual significance as publicist and philosopher are studied. No one can write a book on Bernard Shaw with out acknowledging the inevitable obligation to Dr. Archibald Henderson, the authoritative biographer Of the playwright, and the man best fitted to de cide any question pertaining to him. The present writer renders grateful thanks to Dr. Henderson for his quick and generous giving of information not otherwise to be secured: a debt as pleasant as it is imperative to pay in this preface. Book Man and Superman A Comedy and a Philosophy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Man and Superman A Comedy and a Philosophy Classic Reprint written by Bernard Shaw and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-23 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Man and Superman: A Comedy and a Philosophy is a dramatic work penned by George Bernard Shaw and originally performed at The Royal Court Theatre in London in 1905. George Bernard Shaw was a well-known Irish author, playwright and journalist. He holds the distinction of being the only individual ever to win both an Academy Award and the Nobel Prize for Literature. Man and Superman is one of his most well known dramatic works. The story is a classic 'Don Juan' story, the fictional libertine and womaniser who is the central character in many dramatic works. Told over four acts, it is the story of John Tanner, a revolutionary, and his pursuit of the beautiful Ann Whitefield. A lengthy epistle dedicatory in which the author explains the genesis of the work precedes the play. The book concludes with The Revolutionist's Handbook, presented as the work of Shaw's central character John Tanner. Man and Superman, as the subtitle suggests, is intended to be both a comedic work and a commentary on gender relations. Shaw believes that women hold more social power than men, particularly with regards to decisions of marriage. The drama itself is indeed quite comical, and it becomes clear to the reader why this work achieved a good deal of popularity in its day. George Bernard Shaw was an accomplished artist, and Man and Superman is one of his most renowned works. Fans of Shaw will certainly be pleased with this title, which can also serve as the perfect introduction to the author's works for the uninitiated.
