Book excerpt: This anthology brings together over 25 pieces of writing by, and interviews with, the German painter, Georg Baselitz. Known for his rebellious approach to Abstract Expressionism, here Baselitz's discusses the impression his paintings convey, the act of painting, his biography and much more. The artist's own writings cover topics as varied as his first trip abroad to other painters that he considers to be great. The texts shift between these personal pieces - most of which have never been published before - to interviews with Baselitz and a variety of critics and art historians. These conversations present a different voice as he responds to careful and critical questions about his work. Many of the writings and interviews are available in English for the first time. A unique perspective on Georg Baselitz, this collection offers a personal insight on the artist and his relationship to painting.

Book excerpt: The Hess Art Collection is one of the world's most distinguished private collections of contemporary art. It was assembled by the Swiss businessman and wine producer Donald M. Hess. The collection unites extraordinary works by numerous artists now known around the world as well as excellent pieces by artists whose names are (as yet) less well known. This mixture is part of the ensemble's particular charm, making a glance through this copiously illustrated catalogue a veritable expedition. Hess's collecting activities primarily focus on the individual work. Accompanied by an unmistakable sense of quality, he judiciously selected the works he acquired over a period of more than forty years. A large part of the collection's holdings is open to the public in the museums of the Hess wineries in Napa, California, Glen Carlou in Paarl, South Africa, and Bodega Colomé in Calchaquí Valley, Argentina. A fourth museum is being planned at the Peter Lehmann Winery in Barossa Valley, Australia.

Book excerpt: The First Book With All of George Baselitz's Sculptures Georg Baselitz, born Hans-Georg Kern in Deutschbaselitz, Saxony, in 1939, continuously contravenes set categories and regularities in his work. The manifold meanings of his works, the allusions and pictorial references to art history, contemporary history and biography, the ironic distance and the eagerness to experiment emphasize how he ceaselessly rethinks and reinvents his painting. In sculpture, in which Baselitz first began to work in 1979, he fights against harmony and symmetry just as he does in his paintings. Much like the painter Baselitz accords the greatest possible freedom to the individual brushstrokes in his paintings, the sculptor Baselitz works the wood with a chain saw, hatchet and chisel. The raw feats of strength create abrupt lines, notches and incisions in the sculpture. Sculpture, the artist has said, is a shorter path than painting to express the same problem, since sculpture is more primitive, more brutal and more unconditional. The lively evocative power of the creative means is much more directly legible and much less encoded in the medium of sculpture. This volume is a catalogue raisonne documenting all fifty eight scupltures created over the past thirty years, from his first sculpture "Model for a Sculpture"(1979-1980) to his most recent, "Folk Thing Zero"(2009).

Book excerpt: Georg Baselitz's various creative phases are exemplified by 31 of his masterpieces that are held within the Bavarian State Painting Collections. The volume analyses for the first time these important paintings and sculptures within the context of the history of the collection, which has been shaped not only by the artist's outstanding supporters and collectors, including Duke Franz von Bayern, but also by the passionate commitment of the directors and curators of the museum. In 1972, when Tern became the first work by Georg Baselitz to enter the Bavarian State Painting Collections, a first step was made towards building an epochal collection of the artist's paintings and sculptures. Today, 47 years later, the museum is dedicating the present extensive publication to this main focus within its holdings, which has been built up over the past decades. It spotlights one of the pinnacles of its collection of art after 1945, whose outstanding profile in the international museum landscape is also characterised by unique holdings of works by Joseph Beuys, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Anselm Kiefer, Sigmar Polke, Arnulf Rainer and Fred Sandback.

Book excerpt: This beautifully designed catalogue, published to accompany the Winter 2007 exhibition of this important German neo-Expressionist's work at Nyehaus, New York, comes housed in a stunning monochrome cobalt-blue linen-bound clamshell box with the artist's name embossed upside down and inside out on the front cover. Inside is a Coptic-stitched monograph, exquisitely printed on lush paper, which features a selection of Baselitz's work from the 1960s and 70s--including oils on canvas, pastels, gouaches, and works in graphite, ink, crayon and other media. Designed by the prominent New York firm Helicopter, the book's cover typography conveys the characteristic disorientation that Baselitz's work induces when he inverts his work's subject matter in order to free up its content. Inside, texts are printed in both English and German, while the typefaces address Baselitz's struggle to reconcile his conservative German heritage with his contemporary sensibilities as an artist. Essay by Siegfreid Gohr, scholar and friend of the artist.

Book excerpt: Ever since 1963, when East Berlin's renowned art academy, Hochschule der Kunste, expelled Georg Baselitz for what's been translated as "sociopolitical immaturity," and the police confiscated work from his first solo show, he's officially been an art-world bad boy. More than 40 years into his career, he's still literally turning his subjects upside down, and he is considered one of Europe's most influential painters. This collection of more than 100 works spanning from Baselitz's earliest years to the present day offers an unparalleled overview of his oeuvre, as well as insight into the subtle changes that have come to his work as he has matured: In recent years the distinctive visual universe that grew out of the artist's study of art, myth and literature has expanded to make room for the personal, for memories of an upbringing in the German and Slavic cultural borderland, for everyday life and his family and for revisiting works by himself and others.

Book excerpt: A retrospective with one hundred works on paper, commemorating the eighty-fifth birthday of Georg Baselitz. To mark his eighty-fifth birthday, the famous international German artist Georg Baselitz donated a collection of works on paper to both the Albertina Museum in Vienna and the Morgan Library in New York. This volume combines the one hundred sheets to create a representative retrospective, providing by virtue of its concentration an important contribution to the understanding of Baselitz's entire oeuvre. The two extensive sets of drawings and watercolors date from different creative phases, ranging from the early 1960s to the present day. Through this direct medium, the works provide an intimate insight into the artist's creative process across the past five decades. An interview with Georg Baselitz conducted to mark this publication provides information about the significance of the works on paper in the genesis of his works and within his oeuvre.
