Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 2. The present volume assembles a group of papers covering a wide variety of topics in geophysics. These papers were presented at a special symposium, June 28 and 29, 1957, conducted by the U.S. National Committee for the International Geophysical Year just before the IGY program formally began. The papers are not only of general and historical interest, but many of them contain reports on early results of the IGY. Although the IGY formally began on July 1, 1957, a number of our own projects had been initiated considerably before that time; moreover, certain geophysical research which formed the basis for the IGY departure is also encompassed in this volume. Finally, the papers provide not only the status of our projects at the beginning of the IGY but often present reviews of the general status of a discipline. For all of these reasons, the Committee believes that the present volume may be of value to geophysicists broadly.

Book Igy Year of Discovery

Download or read book Igy Year of Discovery written by Sydney Chapman and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, in word and picture, is the story of man's first probe into space. Vanguard and Sputnik are only one side of the story--the International Geophysical Year is the first concerted international effort to advance our knowledge not only of space but of earth and sun. Sydney Chapman, leader of the team of scientists that directed the program, re-creates for the general reader the discoveries that will provide the basis for our exploration of space. He describes how scientists from 67 nations pooled their resources and techniques to explore our corner of the universe--with satellites and rockets, the voyage of the "Nautilus" under the polar ice cap, teams of amateur moonwatchers--and what their discoveries mean for our future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Deep Freeze, Dian Olson Belanger tells the story of the pioneers who built viable communities, made vital scientific discoveries, and established Antarctica as a continent dedicated to peace and the pursuit of science, decades after the first explorers planted flags in the ice. In the tense 1950s, even as the world was locked in the Cold War, U.S. scientists, maintained by the Navy's Operation Deep Freeze, came together in Antarctica with counterparts from eleven other countries to participate in the International Geophysical Year (IGY). On July 1, 1957, they began systematic, simultaneous scientific observations of the south-polar ice and atmosphere. Their collaborative success over eighteen months inspired the Antarctic Treaty of 1959, which formalized their peaceful pursuit of scientific knowledge. Still building on the achievements of the individuals and distrustful nations thrown together by the IGY from mutually wary military, scientific, and political cultures, science prospers today and peace endures. The year 2007 marked the fiftieth anniversary of the IGY and the commencement of a new International Polar Year - a compelling moment to review what a singular enterprise accomplished in a troubled time. Belanger draws from interviews, diaries, memoirs, and official records to weave together the first thorough study of the dawn of Antarctica's scientific age. Deep Freeze offers absorbing reading for those who have ventured onto Antarctic ice and those who dream of it, as well as historians, scientists, and policy makers

Book The History of the International Polar Years IPYs

Download or read book The History of the International Polar Years IPYs written by Susan Barr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-02 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although international scientific cooperation - particularly in meteorology - was established previous to the first International Polar Year, the IPY-1 (1882-83) is considered to be the first revolutionary step towards an extensive international cooperation in the polar areas for the benefit of science rather than national prestige and territorial gain. This was followed by IPY-2 (1932-33) and IPY-3 - actually the International Geophysical Year (1957-58) - before the crowning effort of IPY-4 (2007-08). The history of these years is recounted here and explains the political, economic, technical and scientific conditions and expectations that laid the basis for each IPY and which gradually expanded both the scope and extent of our understanding of the complexities in polar regions

Book Solved Problems in Geophysics

Download or read book Solved Problems in Geophysics written by Elisa Buforn and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-04-26 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solving problems is an indispensable exercise for mastering the theory underlying the various branches of geophysics. This book is a collection of nearly 200 problems in geophysics, which are solved in detail showing each step of their solution, the equations used and the assumptions made. Simple figures are also included to help students understand how to reduce a problem to its key elements. The book introduces the equations most commonly used in solving geophysical problems, and presents a series of exercises for the main, classical areas of geophysics – gravity, geomagnetism, seismology, and heat flow and geochronology. Problems range from simple exercises for the most elementary courses to more complex problems suitable for graduate-level students. This handy book is the ideal adjunct to core course textbooks on geophysical theory. It is a convenient source of additional homework and exam questions for instructors, and provides students with a practice or revision aid.
