Book Petroleum Exploration and Exploitation in Norway

Download or read book Petroleum Exploration and Exploitation in Norway written by S. Hanslien and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1995-12-15 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This conference was arranged by the Norwegian Petroleum Society in order to commemorate the first 25 years of exploration on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Sixty papers and posters were presented of which 25 have been selected for this volume. Since the start of exploration activities during the mid 1960's the North Sea has not only proved to be one of the main petroleum provinces in the world, but has also established itself as an excellent laboratory for geoscientific research and application. This development has been stimulated greatly by the openess towards exchange of technical data encouragement by the Norwegian authorities. The objective of this book is to assess the results of 25 years of exploration in Norway. It focuses on lessons learned from past experiences as well as considering future challenges facing geoscientists in the industry (relating to both exploration and exploitation activities). Included, are papers which assess the status and future trends of exploration in the main geological provinces on the Norwegian Continental Shelf from the Central Graben in the south to Svalbard and the Russian Artic in the north.

Book Science and Daily Life in the Study of the Northern Lights 1898 1928

Download or read book Science and Daily Life in the Study of the Northern Lights 1898 1928 written by Mette Bunting and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-14 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world’s first Northern Lights observatory is the focus of this account about everyday life and epoch-making pioneering of geophysical research on Haldde Mountain in Finnmark, Norway. Inside four walls in extreme weather conditions at 9000 metres above sea level, the residents formed a class-divided mini-society with researchers, assistants, wives and maids. This book provides an insight into eventful years of the last century. Children are born, photographs and measurements of the Northern Lights are taken, the research develops, and important people die. The work conducted on Haldde Mountain resulted in a geophysical institute and weather forecasting services for Northern Norway and was the basis for the foundation of Norway’s most northern university. The book builds on private letters, memoirs and archive material about daily life and research.

Book Dynamics of the Norwegian Margin

Download or read book Dynamics of the Norwegian Margin written by Geological Society of London and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2000 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers and research results presented here have been prepared as part of the Integrated Basin Studies project. This project had the objective of studying the lithospheric and upper crustal processes governing the formation and evolution of extensional and foreland basins and to decipher the role of tectonics, sea level and sedimentary processes in the filling of such basins. The Dynamics of the Norwegian Margin module focused on the rifted sedimentary basins of the northern North Sea and off Mid-Norway. This prolific hydrocarbon province has an extensive industry and scientific database and offers a unique opportunity to study fundamental earth processes, from failed rifting to crustal breakup and accretion of oceanic crust. A set of new models for basin formation and filling has been derived, including linking of sedimentary basin faulting to lower crustal deformation, signature and variability of syn-rift infill, correlation of mineralogy to seismic signature, nature and characteristics of volcanic margin formation and distribution of present-day stress field.

Book excerpt: "The little northern town of Bergen, sea-port, fishing-haven, market town, has done more for science in the last two or three generations than many - not to say most - university towns." (Nature, July 21, 1928). Bergen, in Western Norway, is the birthplace of modern weather forecasting and of physical oceanography. It has been a center for daring polar expeditions, for NATO research, and for climate modeling. In 2017, the internationally oriented Geophysical Institute celebrated its 100th anniversary. This book tells the scientific history of geophysics as seen from Bergen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research grant N00014-90-J-1834 supported a 75-day geophysical field program on Reykjanes Ridge in the North Atlantic Ocean and Aegir Ridge in the Norway Basin of the Norwegian Sea. The field program took place in summer 1990 on R/V Maurice Ewing of Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory; the program was carried out jointly by researchers at the Naval Research Laboratory Code 5110, Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory and University of Hawaii. University of Hawaii responsibility included providing and operating the SeaMARC II seafloor mapping system during the course of the field program, processing the SeaMARC II side-scan sonar and bathymetric data to produce seafloor charts and sonar mosaics, and participating in the geophysical interpretation of the data.
