Book Geomorphic History of the Virgin River in the Zion National Park Area Southwest Utah Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geomorphic History of the Virgin River in the Zion National Park Area, Southwest Utah This study addresses the alluvial geo morphology of the upper Virgin River in southwest Utah during the past years, the late Holocene of geologic time. The study area lies in and near Zion National Park and includes the North Fork (virgin River) in Zion Canyon below The Narrows, East Fork (virgin River) in lower Parunuweap Canyon, and the Virgin River downstream of the park to Virgin, Utah (fig. The question of how natural variations of discharge and sediment load alter the alluvial valley and channel was the research topic. This information is necessary to understand the role of dis charge variability in the recent geomorphic development of the alluvial valley, which in turn effects riparian and aquatic resources. These resources are linked to changes in the alluvial valley, because alluvium is the sub strate for riparian vegetation and the allu vial channel is the habitat of six species of native fish (deacon, written commun., Results of this study suggest that the allu vial valley has changed rapidly in response to natural discharge variations. Boyle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inventory of the Aquatic Resources in the East and North Forks of the Virgin River in and Above Zion National Park, Utah In order to preserve and protect natural resources within the National Park System, it is important to understand the underlying ecological factors controlling and maintaining critical resource attributes of the system. The factors governing the ecological components of stream systems are highly variable. In general, the structure and function of ecological communities in arid streams is a function of the nature and strength of those factors. Inventories of natural resources addressing management concerns for preserving natural systems should include analysis of the status of these factors. Preservation of the environmental conditions is critical to sustaining the natural condition of aquatic resources. Book The Geology of the Central Virgin River Basin Southwestern Utah and Its Relation to Ground water Conditions

Download or read book The Geology of the Central Virgin River Basin Southwestern Utah and Its Relation to Ground water Conditions written by Hugh A. Hurlow and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the geology of the central Virgin River basin in southwestern Utah, and characterizes the structure and lithology of the Jurassic Navajo Sandstone and the thickness and stratigraphy of Quaternary-late Tertiary unconsolidated deposits, the two main aquifers in the region. Southwestern Utah has experienced rapid population growth and increased demand on water supplies during the past 15 years, and the purpose of this report is to better define the ground-water resources of the area. Ground water provides approximately half of the public water supply in southwestern Utah, so future decisions regarding water use must be based on careful geologic characterization of the aquifers and their relation to the regional hydrologic system. The results of this study will be applied to ground-water modeling, evaluating regional and local hydrogeologic conditions, and assessing sites for development of ground water. 53 pages + 7 plates

Book The Potential for Restoration Along the Virgin River in Zion National Park

Download or read book The Potential for Restoration Along the Virgin River in Zion National Park written by James P. McMahon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Potential for Restoration Along the Virgin River in Zion National Park: An Evaluation of Restoration Alternatives With Focus on the Potential to Regenerate Cottonwood (Populus Fremontii) Along the North Fork of the Virgin River in Zion National Park Without active intervention the magnificent canopy of cottonwood trees, part of the historic landscape within Zion Canyon, will vanish in the next few decades. Pioneer accounts describe a canyon filled with many mature trees as early as 1860 but today there is insufficient successful reproduction to replace those aging trees. Cottonwood reproduction is reduced throughout the Canyon, the lack of young trees is especially apparent in the areas near Zion Lodge where virtually none are present. Previous studies suggest that the reduction in cottonwood recruitment is greatest in areas where man-made rock and wire revetments were constructed in the 1930's. These aging revetments along the Virgin River will soon have to be replaced or removed as their deterioration creates an increasing public safety hazard. Cottonwood reproduction is dependent on bare, moist soils commonly created during flooding. It is apparent in the areas lined with revetments that cottonwood trees are not being replaced due to the separation of the river from the floodplain. Concern over the loss of the historic cottonwood forest and the need to address the deteriorating revetments caused the National Park Service to explore options including the possible restoration of a naturally functioning river channel and floodplain. The purpose of this study was to provide the park with an assessment of existing conditions and potential for restoring riparian function with its associated benefits to the river and the cottonwood community.
