Book The Influence of Plasticity and Geometry on the Mixed Mode Fracture of PMMA

Download or read book The Influence of Plasticity and Geometry on the Mixed Mode Fracture of PMMA written by JCW Davenport and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of changing notch tip constraint in mixed modes I/II, through the influence of plasticity and geometry, are studied in single edge notch (SEN) specimens of PMMA using a newly developed test apparatus. Elastic-plastic finite element analyses show the different constraint effects between notched and cracked specimens. The influence of molecular weight is also investigated. In a parallel study, the behaviour of PMMA under mixed modes I/III is studied using circumferentially notched round bar (CNRB) specimens. Two sizes of specimen, both notched, are tested to identify the role of constraint in this type of fracture. The results from both types of shear test show that the type of crack, mode of loading, and the load history all have an influence on the role of constraint and therefore its fracture properties of PMMA.

Book Elastic Plastic Mixed Mode Fracture Criteria and Parameters

Download or read book Elastic Plastic Mixed Mode Fracture Criteria and Parameters written by Valery N. Shlyannikov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-08-07 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My wife Tatyana, daughter Mariya, son Alexandr It is well known that the mixed-mode conditions appear when the direction of the applied loading does not coincide with the orthogonal K,-Kn-Km space. In general, in the industrial practice the mixed-mode fracture and the mixed-mode crack growth are more likely to be considered the rule than the exception. Miller et al. considers that cracks can grow due to a mixture of processes (ductile and brittle), mechanisms (static, fatigue, creep) and loading modes (tension, torsion, biax ial/multiaxial). Additionally mixed-mode crack-extension can be affected by many other considerations such as artifact geometry (thin plates, thick shells, and the size, shape and orientation of the defect), environmental effects (temperature, gaseous and liquid surroundings), material state (crystallographic structure, heat treatment and route of manufacture) and stress conditions (out-of-phase and ran dom loading effects). The main feature of the mixed-mode fracture is that the crack growth would no longer take place in a self-similar manner and does not follow a universal trajec tory that is it will grow on a curvilinear path. There are various fracture criteria, which predict the behavior of cracks in brittle and ductile materials loaded in combined modes. Linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) criteria predict basi cally the same direction for crack propagation. Cracks in brittle materials have been shown to propagate normal to the maximum tangential stress. In ductile ma terials yielding occurs at the crack tip and LEFM is no longer applicable.

Book Fracture Mechanics for Modern Engineering Design

Download or read book Fracture Mechanics for Modern Engineering Design written by K. R. Y. Simha and published by Universities Press. This book was released on 2001-11 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fracture is a natural reaction of solids to relieve stress and shed excess energy. The fragility of solids is a constant threat to our survival as we drive over a bridge, go through a tunnel, or even inside a building. This book weaves together the essential concepts underlying fracture mechanics.

Book Problems of mixed mode crack propagation

Download or read book Problems of mixed mode crack propagation written by E.E. Gdoutos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not just another book on fracture mechanics. In recent years, there have been many books published on this subject in an attempt to assess the state of the art and its applications. The majority of the work dealt with energy release rate or critical stress intensity factor and is applicable only to fracture toughness testing. The main reason for this restriction is that the energy release concept cannot easily be extended to mixed mode fracture that occurs in practice as the rule rather than the exception. Cracks will normally curve or turn because the direction of loading can change as a function of time. Their directions of growth cannot be assumed as an a priori and must be determined from a pre-assumed criterion. Analysts are still perplexed with selecting an appropriate fracture criterion because it requires much discernment and judgement. Criteria which often appeared valid for idealized situations are quickly dis credited when encountering more complex physical phenomena. Moreover, the claim of generality cannot be justified on the basis of agreement between theory and experiment for a few simple examples.

Book Fitness for Service Fracture Assessment of Structures Containing Cracks

Download or read book Fitness for Service Fracture Assessment of Structures Containing Cracks written by Uwe Zerbst and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of Fitness-for-Service Fracture Assessment of Structures Containing Cracks is to facilitate the use of fracture mechanics based failure assessment procedures for the evaluation and design of structures and components. All practical structures contain flaws and the optimum combination of cost efficiency and safety whilst achieving the required capability, can only be realised by using state of the art methods such as that represented by the European flaw assessment method SINTAP/FITNET to analyse the safety risk. This book is written by practitioners with extensive experience in both the development and use of integrity assessment methods and provides comprehensive information on the basic principles and use of analytical flaw assessment. It provides an introduction to the method, its background, how it can be applied, its potential and, importantly, its limitations. The explanations are complimented by using a large number of worked examples and validation exercises which illustrate all aspects of the procedure. In addition, for students and engineers who are new to the subject, a comprehensive glossary of basic terms used in fracture mechanics based integrity evaluations is included. The topics addressed include: Crack driving force (CDF) and failure assessment diagram (FAD) type analyses Preparation of the input parameters (crack dimensions, stress-strain properties, fracture toughness, statistical aspects) Determination of the model parameters, (stress intensity factor and yield load solutions) Treatment of combined primary and secondary loading, together with residual stress effects Analysis of the effect of constraint effects (treatment of small defects and section size effects) Treatment of mixed mode loading Consideration of the influences of strength mismatch Reliability aspects Comprehensive description of the use of structural integrity methods to optimise cost effectiveness and safety Detailed description of how to evaluate the integrity of structures containing cracks Valuable background information for understanding the methods, their potential and limitations Large number of worked examples, which demonstrate all aspects of the methods Descriptive, readable writing style Applicable to a wide range of interests, from the student (university or self study) to the expert who requires a 'state of the art' document

Download or read book Fracture Mechanics written by Surjya Kumar Maiti and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fracture mechanics studies the development and spreading of cracks in materials. The study uses two techniques including analytical and experimental solid mechanics. The former is used to determine the driving force on a crack and the latter is used to measure material's resistance to fracture. The text begins with a detailed discussion of fundamental concepts including linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM), yielding fracture mechanics, mixed mode fracture and computational aspects of linear elastic fracture mechanics. It explains important topics including Griffith theory of brittle crack propagation and its Irwin and Orowan modification, calculation of theoretical cohesive strength of materials through an atomic model and analytical determination of crack tip stress field. This book covers MATLAB programs for calculating fatigue life under variable amplitude cyclic loading. The experimental measurements of fracture toughness parameters KIC, JIC and crack opening displacement (COD) are provided in the last chapter.
