Book excerpt: GeometricModelingandProcessing(GMP)isabiennialinternationalconference on geometric modeling, simulation and computing, which provides researchers and practitioners with a forum for exchanging new ideas, discussing new app- cations, and presenting new solutions. Previous GMP conferences were held in Pittsburgh (2006), Beijing (2004), Tokyo (2002), and Hong Kong (2000). This, the 5th GMP conference, was held in Hangzhou, one of the most beautiful cities in China. GMP 2008 received 113 paper submissions, covering a wide spectrum of - ometric modeling and processing, such as curves and surfaces, digital geometry processing, geometric feature modeling and recognition, geometric constraint solving, geometric optimization, multiresolution modeling, and applications in computer vision, image processing, scienti?c visualization, robotics and reverse engineering. Each paper was reviewed by at least three members of the program committee andexternalreviewers.Basedonthe recommendations ofthe revi- ers, 34 regular papers were selected for oral presentation, and 17 short papers were selected for poster presentation. All selected papers are included in these proceedings. We thank all authors, external reviewers and program committee members for their great e?ort and contributions, which made this conference a success.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers presented at 6th Conference on Geometric Modeling and Processing (GMP 2010) held in Castro Urdiales, Spain during June16–18,2010. GeometricModelingandProcessingisabiannualinternational conference series on geometric modeling, simulation and computing. Previously, GMPhasbeenheldinHongKong(2000),Saitama,Japan(2002),Beijing,China (2004), Pittsburgh, USA (2006) and Hangzhou, China (2008). GMP 2010 received a total of 30 submissions that were reviewed by three to four Program Committee members on average. While the number of subm- sions dropped signi?cantly from previous years, the quality did not and was still quite high overall. Based on the reviews received, the committee decided to - cept 20 papers for inclusion in the proceedings. Additionally, extended versions of selected papers were considered for a special issue of Computer-Aided - sign (CAD) and Computer-Aided Geometric Design (CAGD). The paper topics spanned a wide variety and include: – Solutions of transcendental equations – Volume parameterization – Smooth curves and surfaces – Isogeometric analysis – Implicit surfaces – Computational geometry Many people helped make this conference happen and we are grateful for their help. We would especially like to thank the Conference Chair, all of the authors who submitted papers, the ProgramCommittee members who reviewed the papers and all of the participants at the conference.

Book Uncertainty in Geometric Computations

Download or read book Uncertainty in Geometric Computations written by Joab Winkler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the workshop Uncertainty in Geomet ric Computations that was held in Sheffield, England, July 5-6, 2001. A total of 59 delegates from 5 countries in Europe, North America and Asia attended the workshop. The workshop provided a forum for the discussion of com putational methods for quantifying, representing and assessing the effects of uncertainty in geometric computations. It was organised around lectures by invited speakers, and presentations in poster form from participants. Computer simulations and modelling are used frequently in science and engi neering, in applications ranging from the understanding of natural and artificial phenomena, to the design, test and manufacturing stages of production. This widespread use necessarily implies that detailed knowledge of the limitations of computer simulations is required. In particular, the usefulness of a computer simulation is directly dependent on the user's knowledge of the uncertainty in the simulation. Although an understanding of the phenomena being modelled is an important requirement of a good computer simulation, the model will be plagued by deficiencies if the errors and uncertainties in it are not consid ered when the results are analysed. The applications of computer modelling are large and diverse, but the workshop focussed on the management of un certainty in three areas : Geometric modelling, computer vision, and computer graphics.
