Book Byzantine Poetry from Pisides to Geometres

Download or read book Byzantine Poetry from Pisides to Geometres written by Marc Diederik Lauxtermann and published by Austrian Academy of Sciences Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two-volume study Byzantine Poetry from Pisides to Geometres. Texts and Contexts, constitutes a survey of Byzantine poems written between ca. 600 and 1000, with particular emphasis on the historical contexts that generated these texts. It is a study of literary genres set against the background of historical developments that changed Byzantine culture fundamentally. In this first volume the author deals with contextual and textual problems of Byzantine poetry (chapters 1-3) and treats various kinds of the Byzantine epigram (chapters 4-9). The book concludes with 10 appendices that present the material evidence: manuscripts and verse inscriptions. \nThe book is of interest to historians, art historians and philologists; as all the texts are translated, it can also be read by scholars with little or no knowledge of Byzantine Greek.

Book The Byzantine World

Download or read book The Byzantine World written by Paul Stephenson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-12-20 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Byzantine World presents the latest insights of the leading scholars in the fields of Byzantine studies, history, art and architectural history, literature, and theology. Those who know little of Byzantine history, culture and civilization between AD 700 and 1453 will find overviews and distillations, while those who know much already will be afforded countless new vistas. Each chapter offers an innovative approach to a well-known topic or a diversion from a well-trodden path. Readers will be introduced to Byzantine women and children, men and eunuchs, emperors, patriarchs, aristocrats and slaves. They will explore churches and fortifications, monasteries and palaces, from Constantinople to Cyprus and Syria in the east, and to Apulia and Venice in the west. Secular and sacred art, profane and spiritual literature will be revealed to the reader, who will be encouraged to read, see, smell and touch. The worlds of Byzantine ceremonial and sanctity, liturgy and letters, Orthodoxy and heresy will be explored, by both leading and innovative international scholars. Ultimately, readers will find insights into the emergence of modern Byzantine studies and of popular Byzantine history that are informative, novel and unexpected, and that provide a thorough understanding of both.

  • Pages : 169 pages

Download or read book God the Geometer written by Thomas J. McAvoy and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-02-16 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faith is under assault today in the media and on college campuses. Numerous recent surveys show that college professors and contemporary scientists have lower religiosity compared to the general population. Parents are concerned that their children’s faith is not as strong as it should be. Unfortunately, scientific advances can lead people to think that faith is passé, supplanted by science, and no longer necessary. The average person is in awe of the accomplishments of science but overwhelmed by their complexity. The purpose of this book is to demonstrate what one can learn from modern science that leads to the conclusion that God created our universe. This book demonstrates how cosmology, physics, astronomy, and evolution do not conflict with faith but actually strongly support faith in God. The title of this book, God the Geometer, describes an image which appeared in a thirteenth-century codex. The image conveys the message that God created the universe using geometric and harmonic principles.

Book Land in the Struggles for Citizenship in Africa

Download or read book Land in the Struggles for Citizenship in Africa written by Moyo, Sam and published by CODESRIA. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The variety of land questions facing Africa and the divergent strategies proposed to resolve them continue to evoke debates. Increasingly, in response to the enduring problems of land tenure, there are land movements of all shapes and orientations, some reformist and others quite revolutionary in their agenda. However revolutionary, land movements have tended to ignore the land tenure interests of women, pastoralists, youth and indigenous people. Several of these longstanding and emerging issues in land tenure include the role of the state in land tenure reforms; urban land questions, the nature of land struggles and improvements; and, the impact of land tenure developments on particular social groups and countries. An overarching concern is the extent to which land rights are being commodified, through the conversion of land held under customary tenure systems into marketised systems. The consequences of this include growing land concentration, land tenure insecurities, diminishing access to land by various sections of society, including the poor, women and less dominant ethno-religious groups. This volume brings together different studies on Africa's land questions exploring emerging land issues on the continent in terms of the wider questions of development, citizenship, and democratisation. The chapters discuss the land question through a variety of themes. Some focus on the agrarian aspects of the land questions, while others elucidate the urban dimensions of the land question.
