Book excerpt: On October 1, 2008 US DOE-sponsored research project entitled "Geomechanical Study of Bakken Formation for Improved Oil Recovery" under agreement DE-FC26-08NT0005643 officially started at The University of North Dakota (UND). This is the final report of the project; it covers the work performed during the project period of October 1, 2008 to December 31, 2013. The objectives of this project are to outline the methodology proposed to determine the in-situ stress field and geomechanical properties of the Bakken Formation in Williston Basin, North Dakota, USA to increase the success rate of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing so as to improve the recovery factor of this unconventional crude oil resource from the current 3% to a higher level. The success of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing depends on knowing local in-situ stress and geomechanical properties of the rocks. We propose a proactive approach to determine the in-situ stress and related geomechanical properties of the Bakken Formation in representative areas through integrated analysis of field and well data, core sample and lab experiments. Geomechanical properties are measured by AutoLab 1500 geomechanics testing system. By integrating lab testing, core observation, numerical simulation, well log and seismic image, drilling, completion, stimulation, and production data, in-situ stresses of Bakken formation are generated. These in-situ stress maps can be used as a guideline for future horizontal drilling and multi-stage fracturing design to improve the recovery of Bakken unconventional oil.

Globally, there is widespread interest in exploiting shale gas resources to meet rising energy demands, maintain energy security and stability in supply and reduce dependence on higher carbon sources of energy, namely coal and oil. However, extracting shale gas is a resource intensive process and is dependent on the geological and geomechanical characteristics of the source rocks, making the development of certain formations uneconomic using current technologies. Therefore, evaluation of the physical and mechanical properties of shale, together with technological advancements, is critical in verifying the economic viability of such formation. Accurate geomechanical information about the rock and its variation through the shale is important since stresses along the wellbore can control fracture initiation and frac development. In addition, hydraulic fracturing has been widely employed to enhance the production of oil and gas from underground reservoirs. Hydraulic fracturing is a complex operation in which the fluid is pumped at a high pressure into a selected section of the wellbore. The interaction between the hydraulic fractures and natural fractures is the key to fracturing effectiveness prediction and high gas development. The development and growth of a hydraulic fracture through the natural fracture systems of shale is probably more complex than can be described here, but may be somewhat predictable if the fracture system and the development of stresses can be explained. As a result, comprehensive shale geomechanical experiments, physical modeling experiment and numerical investigations should be conducted to reveal the fracturing mechanical behaviors of shale.

The surface facilities expense and price of injected fluid was the most economically viable in the waterflood situation, because the water is incomparably less costly. The water alternating gas injection simulation declared that the results were similar to CO2 injection except with a higher pressure in the reservoir. Therefore, it is concluded that Waterflood in the most economically feasible choice for this field according to these simulations.

Book excerpt: A decrease in the discovery of reserves in conventional reservoirs has led to a focus on unconventional reservoirs. New techniques, such as hydraulic fracturing, provide better production conditions and allow the development of new reservoirs. The Bakken unconventional play is one of the most important oil plays since it has the largest crude oil accumulation in the United States. During the study, 86 wells with the digitized format (log ASCII standard) were used for depositional environment analysis and petrophysical interpretation of the Bakken Formation in the northwest part of North Dakota. The Bakken Formation is subdivided into six facies which show diversity in thicknesses over the study area. The thicker parts of the Bakken Formation correlate to higher oil production. Petrophysical and elastic properties of the Bakken Formation was examined in terms of their effects on productivity. The best calculation methods for these properties such as water saturation, effective porosity, brittleness, were tested according to the best match of log data calculations and core data results. Log data calculations show a harmonious trend with the core data. It has been questioned as to whether brittleness can, in and of itself, be a key indicator of the productivity of a well. Brittleness, an important factor in hydraulic fracturing, was calculated by using log and mineralogy data. These results were used to estimate how the facies would respond to hydraulic fracturing, and were compared with petrophysical calculations for the determination of possible horizontal targets. High brittle conditions allow the rock to be fractured resulting in a smoother production process. The brittleness analysis shows that an increase in brittleness also results in an increase of productivity. Even though there were some areas with high resistivity and low water saturation conditions, which are key points for oil production, due to unsufficient brittleness, these areas are not ideal for drilling. Therefore, the brittleness has been concluded to be a key factor of how productive a well can and will be.
