Book Geotechnical Properties of Tailings Effect of Fines Content

Download or read book Geotechnical Properties of Tailings Effect of Fines Content written by Sartaj Singh Gill and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liquefaction assessment of mine tailings is currently done using empirical correlations that were developed using data mostly collected in natural soils; their applicability to tailings is yet to be proven. In-situ density represented by the state parameter is the key link between liquefaction susceptibility and the Cone Penetration Test (CPT) measurements that are commonly used to characterize tailings. Quantifying the interdependence of gradation, in-situ state parameter, and CPT measurements is a first step towards developing tailings-specific liquefaction assessment methods. The effect of fines content and gradation on the soil properties and the interpretation of the CPT tip resistance was assessed for Base Metal Tailings. Five gradations with fines contents ranging from 0% to 100% were tested. A series of tests were conducted to evaluate the critical state parameters, shear modulus (G), coefficient of lateral earth pressure at rest (K0), particle shape, and mineralogy.

Book SYNTHESIS OF GEOTECHNICAL PROPERTIES OF MINE TAILINGS

Download or read book SYNTHESIS OF GEOTECHNICAL PROPERTIES OF MINE TAILINGS written by Yen Chieh Wang and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minerals and their products play a vital role in humans life after the 19th Century. In 2015, the value of coal, metals, and industrial minerals mined in the United States was over $100 billion according to the report of U.S Geological Survey (USGS). Tailings dams that are usually used to store these wastes encountered several structural failures in the past century. These catastrophes not only affect humans life but also pollute the environment. Recently, an iron tailings dam failure in Brazil on Feb 1, 2019 caused more than 60 deaths and significant economic loss. This study synthesizes the data that were presented in the previous publications in last 40 years along with the coal tailings data that were obtained by the Penn State (PSU) research team. This thesis compared the basic geotechnical properties of different mineral tailings and derived correlations of these properties. The results indicate that fine and coarse coal tailings tend to have lower specific gravity than other minerals. Most of the classifications of fine coal tailings belong to CL and ML. Copper tailings generally have higher hydraulic conductivity than gold tailings. Compared with other mineral tailings, fine coal tailings have the lowest hydraulic conductivity. This study also found that for fine coal tailings the percentage of clay size particles has higher impact on PI than fine content. The percentage of clay size particle and fine content, on the other hand, have very similar impact on LL. A relationship equation between fine content and coefficient of consolidation of fine coal tailings that are classified as SM or ML was derived in this study. The collected database showed that most of the mineral tailings still lack information in both basic properties (i.e. liquid limit and plastic index) and advanced laboratory testing. Even the existing data showed high variability. Compared to the large amount of usage in minerals, the information of mineral tailings is still very limited.

Book Tailings Dam Design

Download or read book Tailings Dam Design written by and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tailings are produced from the processing of mineral ores and are commonly stored within embankment dams. The design of the dams requires application of sound engineering principles and an understanding of the properties of the tailings. This Bulletin provides a framework for classifying different types of tailings, ranging from ultra-fine to coarse, based on their geotechnical properties and provides typical geotechnical parameters for the different tailings types. Technologies for dewatering tailings to reduce the risk of storage continue to be developed and the different technologies, from thickening to filtration, and re-application of old technologies are presented to illustrate the options available and, where appropriate, typical in situ properties. This bulletin is directed towards a wide audience of stakeholders: designers, owners, regulators, communities and various organizations and provides a reference for communicating tailings properties and the benefits and limitations of technologies. All mining operations, and thereby tailings operations, are unique. There is no one-solution-fits-all. Tailings dam designs need to account for site-specific conditions, such as climate, physiography, geochemistry, geomorphology, seismology, mining processes, environment, and community setting, with the application of technologies playing an important role in developing safe, sustainable tailings facilities.

Book Geotechnical Design of Tailings Dams

Download or read book Geotechnical Design of Tailings Dams written by Tarek Hamade and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Mine tailings dams are geotechnical structures that are designed to provide adequate and safe storage of tailings materials both during and after the end of mine life. The design of tailings dams is currently based on limit equilibrium methods (LEM) which are used to calculate slope stability safety factors under various operational loads. The minimum safety factor obtained from these analyses is retained to be the design safety factor. LEM's however suffer from a number of shortcomings most notably the lack of information on dam deformation and the interaction between effective stress and pore pressure. For this, advanced numerical modeling techniques accounting for the hydro-mechanical coupling occurring in the dam structure have been developed. These models provide much greater insight into the geotechnical behavior of the tailings dam. However, both LEM and numerical modeling approaches are deterministic in nature; thus, they do not take into consideration the inherent uncertainty of the construction material properties -- a fact that is well known to the geotechnical engineer, yet, needs to be addressed. In this thesis, stochastic analysis approaches such as the Monte Carlo (MC) method are adopted to investigate the effect of the inherent uncertainty in material properties on the design factor of safety. Both LEM and coupled hydro-mechanical numerical models are first developed and the results for deterministic models are compiled. These are then compared with the result obtained from stochastic analyses. A case study of a new water retention tailings dam project design with well documented geotechnical data is adopted throughout the thesis study. First the LEM analysis was pursued followed by a sensitivity analysis to determine the most influential parameters on the design safety factor. Next, a fully coupled hydro-mechanical model was developed with FLAC2D in which the construction sequence was simulated in seven stages. The factor of safety (FOS) was calculated at the end of every stage using the Strength Reduction Technique (SRT). Following that, the Point Estimate Method (PEM) was then used to obtain the probability of unsatisfactory performance by considering the dam's core angle of friction, cohesion and permeability as stochastic variables. The coefficient of variation for the material properties was varied and its consequence on the probability was recorded. Next, the MC method was adopted to calculate the tailings dam's probability of unsatisfactory performance as well as its reliability. The effect of changing the probability density function (PDF) of the stochastic input parameter on the output reliability was further analyzed. Furthermore, the effect of randomness at the local level was studied using the Random Monte-Carlo (RMC) method and compared to the output of the MC method. Finally, the effect of the coefficient of correlation between the dam's core angle of friction and its cohesion on the impoundment's reliability was analyzed. This was followed by an advanced stochastic analysis using the MC method that included a third stochastic variable, the dam's core permeability. The incorporation of both mechanical and hydraulic parameters as stochastic variables lowered the impoundment's reliability; thus, highlighting the power and novelty in the hydro-mechanical stochastic analysis hybrid approach. The results of all analyses are presented in the thesis along with the findings in the conclusion." --

Book Correlations of Soil and Rock Properties in Geotechnical Engineering

Download or read book Correlations of Soil and Rock Properties in Geotechnical Engineering written by Jay Ameratunga and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-11 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a one-stop reference to the empirical correlations used extensively in geotechnical engineering. Empirical correlations play a key role in geotechnical engineering designs and analysis. Laboratory and in situ testing of soils can add significant cost to a civil engineering project. By using appropriate empirical correlations, it is possible to derive many design parameters, thus limiting our reliance on these soil tests. The authors have decades of experience in geotechnical engineering, as professional engineers or researchers. The objective of this book is to present a critical evaluation of a wide range of empirical correlations reported in the literature, along with typical values of soil parameters, in the light of their experience and knowledge. This book will be a one-stop-shop for the practising professionals, geotechnical researchers and academics looking for specific correlations for estimating certain geotechnical parameters. The empirical correlations in the forms of equations and charts and typical values are collated from extensive literature review, and from the authors' database.

Book Geomechanics of Failures Advanced Topics

Download or read book Geomechanics of Failures Advanced Topics written by Eduardo E. Alonso and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-07-28 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geotechnical failures, specially the catastrophic ones, are a stimulus to improve current understanding of phenomena and procedures and tools for analysis and prediction. This unconventional approach to geomechanics is the essence of this book. In general, soil mechanics and geotechnical textbooks describe first the concepts and theoretical developments and then apply them to interpret or solve a particular applications. This book follows a different course. The case (a failure) is first described and then an explanation is sought. This requires a set of steps which can be summarized as follows: Identify the nature of the problem, develop a dedicated and specific formulation of the case, based on established basic concepts. In general, no single existing theory or procedure is available to solve the case at hand, provide a solution within an acceptable degree of complexity, extract the fundamental aspects of the problem and highlight its relevance. The cases selected have been grouped into three main topics: Landslides, Embankments and Dams and Dynamics of Failures. Cases selected (Vaiont, Aznalcóllar, Brattas-St. Moritz) are unique and illustrate a number of relevant and to some extent controversial issues which are of wide interest, without claiming exhaustive treatment of the subject. The book teaches how to build the necessary models to understand the failures. Well established soil mechanics concepts are the necessary background. But the cases analyzed require in general a step ahead which is specific for the case analyzed. Balance and equilibrium equations are often required as a starting point. They are formulated at different scales, which are selected having in mind the abstract representation of each case. Various chapters illustrate also the coupled nature (flow-deformation-temperature) of geotechnical problems and the need to properly address these complexities in some cases. In fact, temperature effects, a subject often neglected in conventional analyses, are necessary to explain some catastrophic landslides (Vaiont). In some of the chapters, specific calculation tools, included in well known and widely available programs (Excel, Maple...) have been used. Details of the ad hoc programs developed have also been included in Appendices to help the readers to follow the details of the calculation. Finite element methods have not been used. In the landslides analyzed (Vaiont and Brattas-St. Moritz) currently available commercial programs are of limited utility. In the remaining cases the analysis performed provides a sufficient insight and interpretation of field behaviour. Chapters include also a short description of the changes in the original design and the mitigation measures which could have prevented the failure. Also, a summary section of lessons learned is provided in all chapters. Finally, selected topics and more advanced reading are suggested. This book is associated with a Master/Doctorate course being offered at the Department of Geotechnical Engineering and Geosciences of UPC, Barcelona. Potential readers therefore include Graduate and Master students, faculty and professionals in the fields of Civil and Geotechnical Engineering.
