Book Secular Solar and Geomagnetic Variations in the Last 10 000 Years

Download or read book Secular Solar and Geomagnetic Variations in the Last 10 000 Years written by F.R. Stephenson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solar and geomagnetic variability are of considerable interest for scientists of many different persuasions and indeed one has the distinct impression that for the sun at least, there is direct relevance for mankind in general as the interrelation between solar and terrestrial phenomena is starting to be appreciated. From the vast time scale of interest in the variability field, attention was confined to the last 10,000 years in a NATO Advanced Research Workshop held from April 6 - 10, 1987 in Durham, England, and the present publication comprises the lectures given there. Such a Workshop was very timely in view of the impressive new data available from 14C analysis in dated tree rings and lOBe in polar ice cores, from natural palaeomagnetic records in lacustrine sediments and from archaeomagnetic material. Also to be mentioned are new studies of historical accounts of naked-eye sunspots and aurorae. All the data have contributed to improvements in under standing the relative variations of solar properties, the geomagnetic field and climate and it is hoped that this volume will convey the flavour of these advances in knowledge. A feature of the Workshop was the lively discussions which followed so many of the papers. There were several instances of healthy disagreement and this is reflected in the opposing views presented inanumber of the papers published here.

Book Geomagnetic Field Variations in the Past

Download or read book Geomagnetic Field Variations in the Past written by E. Tema and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decades, palaeomagnetic research has provided important information about the past variation of the Earth’s magnetic field (EMF) from its origin to the present day. However, questions regarding the origin and evolution of the EMF as well as the frequency and spatial distribution of its variations still remain open to debate. This Special Publication provides new insights into the study of the temporal and spatial evolution of the EMF presenting new data from palaeomagnetic and rock magnetic studies of archaeological materials, sediments and lavas. The papers presented cover a wide range of topics related to archaeology, stratigraphy and climate, including new data from several parts of the world, such as Europe, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, India and the Baltic Sea. This Special Publication aims to present an overview of the most recent secular variation studies and their use to disclose fundamental properties of the EMF evolution.

Book Encyclopedia of Geomagnetism and Paleomagnetism

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Geomagnetism and Paleomagnetism written by David Gubbins and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-07-19 with total page 1061 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference encompasses the fields of Geomagnetism and Paleomagnetism in a single volume. Both sciences have applications in navigation, in the search for minerals and hydrocarbons, in dating rock sequences, and in unraveling past geologic movements such as plate motions they have contributed to a better understanding of the Earth. The book describes in fine detail the current state of knowledge and provides an up-to-date synthesis of the most basic concepts. It is an indispensable working tool not only for geophysicists and geophysics students but also for geologists, physicists, atmospheric and environmental scientists, and engineers.

Book Physics of Geomagnetic Phenomena

Download or read book Physics of Geomagnetic Phenomena written by S. Matsushita and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physics of Geomagnetic phenomena, Volume I covers the significant advances in geomagnetism and the penetrations into the generation of geomagnetic field phenomena. This volume is composed of three chapters. Chapter I deals briefly with the discovery and developments in geomagnetism, followed by discussions on some fundamental topics of the field, including the aurora and geomagnetic storms. This chapter also considers the instruments, geomagnetic stations, and the correlations between geomagnetic indices. Chapter II describes the magnetic properties of minerals and various processes of acquisition of remanent magnetization. This chapter also provides palaeomagnetic data for the direction and intensity of the geomagnetic field in ancient times. Chapter III explores geomagnetic variations caused by solar flares and eclipses. This book will prove useful to physicists, students in upper atmospheric and space topics, and scientists in allied fields with a background in geomagnetism.

Book Electromagnetism and the Earth s Interior

Download or read book Electromagnetism and the Earth s Interior written by Tsuneji Rikitake and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electromagnetism and the Earth's Interior reviews the earth's magnetic fields in terms of physical processes that are occurring in the earth's interior. The book describes the distribution of the earth's magnetic field in terms of declination, horizontal intensity, and vertical intensity. The dynamo theory concerns the self-exciting electric generation in the interior of the earth, and can account for any geomagnetic secular variation. A workable laboratory model—a dynamo mechanism of Lowes and Wilkinson (1963) has a significant role on the dynamo theory for the model actually demonstrated Herzenberg's proof that was developed mathematically. The text also describes various aspects of long-term geomagnetic variations, such as the decrease in the dipole moment, the reversal of the geomagnetic field, the drift of eccentric dipole, the fluctuation in the length of day, and the geomagnetic secular variation. The book also investigates the possible effects of the ocean on geomagnetic variations. The characteristics of transient geomagnetic variations on islands can point to a possible special underground structure. The book is suitable for geologists, astrophysicists, seismologists, and students of the natural sciences.
