Book Geomagnetic Observations and Models

Download or read book Geomagnetic Observations and Models written by M. Mandea and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-12-10 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides comprehensive and authoritative coverage of all the main areas linked to geomagnetic field observation, from instrumentation to methodology, on ground or near-Earth. Efforts are also focused on a 21st century e-Science approach to open access to all geomagnetic data, but also to the data preservation, data discovery, data rescue, and capacity building. Finally, modeling magnetic fields with different internal origins, with their variation in space and time, is an attempt to draw together into one place the traditional work in producing models as IGRF or describing the magnetic anomalies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Especially due to the increasing environmental problems there is a need to collect as many data as possible in the upper atmosphere. This book serves as a general multidisciplinary guide and introduction for a more effective use of the large amount of now available data from the Earth's atmosphere. It also shows the problems of the use of large amounts of time series data - for basic science as well as for environmental monitoring - and the related information systems. The book is aimed for scientists and students interested in the Earth's atmosphere which is vital for the understanding of environmental changes in the global system Earth.

Book Conditional Probabilities of the Geomagnetic Index Ap

Download or read book Conditional Probabilities of the Geomagnetic Index Ap written by Philip M. Pazich and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data of the geomagnetic index A sub p from 1932 to 1973 were used to determine the conditional probabilities for the occurrence of certain values of that index. The range of values was divided into three categories that approximately correspond to quiet, moderate, and disturbed levels of geomagnetic activity. Conditions applied were the category level of activity on the initial and subsequent day and the portion of the solar sunspot cycle. Conditional probabilities were determined for 100 successive days after the initial day, both for the quiet and active portions of the sunspot cycle. (Author).

Book Space Weather Monitoring by Ground Based Means

Download or read book Space Weather Monitoring by Ground Based Means written by Oleg Troshichev and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-10 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates that the method, based on the ground polar cap magnetic observations is a reliable diagnosis of the solar wind energy coming into the magnetosphere Method for the uninterruptive monitoring of the magnetosphere state (i.e. space weather). It shows that the solar wind energy pumping power, can be described by the PC growth rate, thus, the magnetospheric substorms features are predetermined by the PC dynamics. Furthermore, it goes on to show that the beginning and ending of magnetic storms is predictable. The magnetic storm start only if the solar energy input into the magnetosphere exceeds a certain level and stops when the energy input turns out to be below this level.

Book A Discussion of the Geomagnetic Indices Kp and Ap 1932 to 1971

Download or read book A Discussion of the Geomagnetic Indices Kp and Ap 1932 to 1971 written by Allan L. Cage and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forty years (1 January 1932 to 31 December 1971) of geomagnetic data in terms of the indices Kp and ap were examined. The frequency distributions of these indices and their semiannual and diurnal variations are tabulated and discussed. Frequency tables were generated based on the present value of the index and the succeeding value of the index. These tables clearly demonstrate the persistent nature of Kp and ap. The use of these data as an aid in geomagnetic forecasting is also discussed. (Author).

Book Magnetite Biomineralization and Magnetoreception in Organisms

Download or read book Magnetite Biomineralization and Magnetoreception in Organisms written by Joseph L. Kirschvink and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 679 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mystery of how migrating animals find their way over unfamiliar terrain has intrigued people for centuries, and has been the focus of productive research in the biological sci ences for several decades. Whether or not the earth's magnetic field had anything to do with their navigational abilities has sufaced and been dismissed several times, beginning at least in the mid to late 1800s. This topic generally remained out of the mainstream of scientific research for two reasons: (1) The apparent irreproducibility of many of the be havioral experiments which were supposed to demonstrate the existence of the magnetic sense; and (2) Perceived theoretical difficulties which were encountered when biophysi cists tried to understand how such a sensory system might operate. However, during the mid to late 1960s as the science of ethology (animal behavior) grew, it became clear from studies on bees and birds that the geomagnetic field is used under a variety of conditions. As more and more organisms were found to have similar abilities, the problem shifted back to the question as to the basis of this perception. Of the various schemes for trans ducing the geomagnetic field to the nervous system which have been proposed, the hy pothesis of magnetite-based magnetoreception discussed at length in this volume has per haps the best potential for explaining a wide range of these effects, even though this link is as yet clear only in the case of magnetotactic bacteria.
