Book Geology Ward Inlet north Baffin Island Nunavut NTS 25 O north

Download or read book Geology Ward Inlet north Baffin Island Nunavut NTS 25 O north written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hall Peninsula Integrated Geoscience Program was led by the Canada-Nunavut Geoscience Office, and was designed to increase the geoscience knowledge and assess the economic potential of the area. Eastern Hall Peninsula is dominantly underlain by Archean tonalite to quartz diorite orthogneiss, while Paleoproterozoic supracrustal and intrusive rocks are exposed to the west. The supracrustal rocks are dominated by pelitic, psammitic, amphibolite and calc-silicate units, are interpreted as correlative with the Lake Harbour Group, and are cut by granulite-grade monzogranite to diorite intrusions. Hall Peninsula records three phases of metamorphism and deformation associated with the Trans-Hudson Orogen that have produced thick-skinned, east-verging fold and thrust structures and amphibolite to granulite facies mineral assemblages. Hall Peninsula hosts a highly prospective diamond kimberlite field, as well as mafic and carbonate supracrustal rocks, and ultramafic intrusions that may contain base and/or precious metal, semi-precious gemstone and carving stone resource potential.

Book Geology Irvine Inlet south Baffin Island Nunavut

Download or read book Geology Irvine Inlet south Baffin Island Nunavut written by M. R. St-Onge and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This map summarizes the field observations for the Irvine Inlet (South) map area following eight weeks of regional and targeted bedrock mapping on western Hall Peninsula. The 2015 field campaign completes a two-decade mission to update map coverage for the whole of Baffin Island south of latitude 70°N. The bedrock is dominated by a Paleoproterozoic metaplutonic suite, ranging in composition from gabbro to syenogranite, with crosscutting relations indicating a progression from mafic to silicic magmatism. Prevailing upper amphibolite to lower granulitefacies metamorphic conditions overlap the stability limits of magnetite and orthopyroxene, which is consistent with equilibrium phase diagrams and regional aeromagnetic data. Metasedimentary rocks, including quartzite, pelite, marble, and metagreywacke, are present as screens and enclaves between and within plutonic bodies. An examination of the 'ghost' stratigraphy suggests that the metasedimentary rocks can be correlated with the middle Paleoproterozoic Lake Harbour Group in the south and Piling Group in the north. Two basaltic dyke swarms and shallowly dipping Ordovician limestone respectively crosscut and overly the Paleoproterozoic units"--Page [2].

Book Surficial Geology Conn Lake southwest Baffin Island Nunavut NTS 37 E 3 NTS 37 E 4 NTS 37 E 5 and NTS 37 E 6

Download or read book Surficial Geology Conn Lake southwest Baffin Island Nunavut NTS 37 E 3 NTS 37 E 4 NTS 37 E 5 and NTS 37 E 6 written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The southwest part of the Conn Lake map sheet lies within the Baffin Uplands Physiographic Region, where bedrock is extensively covered by thick glacial deposits. Some areas exhibiting scour were eroded by active, warm-based ice for longer periods of time than regions of cold-based ice. A northeastward early Holocene flow is associated with ice in Foxe Basin to the northeast. Four phases of ice flow were recognized. The Last Glacial maximum relates to phase 1, northeastward, when the region was covered by actively eroding warm-based ice. The second is a north-northeastward flow during the early stages of the Barnes Ice Cap. The next two phases (a later readvance, phase 3, and continued deglaciation, phase 4) are thought to relate to the proto-Barnes Ice Cap.
