Book excerpt: The 5-year Circum-Arctic Lithosphere Evolution (CALE) program developed new constraints on the tectonic history of the central Amerasia basin of the Arctic Ocean. This volume is the final synthesis of the CALE program, which brought together an international team of scientists to develop integrated, multi-disciplinary understanding of the region. This approach, based on the integration of much new geological and geophysical data from onshore and offshore , is necessary to advance our understanding of this basin. Regional onshore-to-offshore transects are central to the 18 papers in this volume. The diverse science supporting these crust-to-mantle regional transects includes structural, geochronological, isotopic, potential fields, and seismic reflection and refraction data. Four chapters present circum-Arctic investigations by the regional CALE teams. The final chapter addresses pan-Arctic themes. This unique collaboration, relying on new data and new syntheses of existing data sheds new light on the history of the Arctic Ocean.

Book excerpt: Since the search for hydrocarbon resources in the Arctic started in the 1930's the exploration activity has expanded into many of the Arctic regions, and several of the Arctic sedimentary basins have proven to be important sources of hydrocarbon. Nevertheless, the Arctic continental margins and adjacent onshore areas are still largely unexplored in the context of petroleum, and are therefore considered to be one of the few regions in the world where significant undiscovered sources of hydrocarbon may exist. The aim of the book is to give an updated overview of the geology of the Arctic sedimentary basins and their petroleum potential. Although the different basins vary significantly as regards sedimentary fill and tectonic evolution, many of the basins share some of the characteristics needed to become prolific oil and gas provinces. The book contains 45 extensively illustrated articles. It starts with papers on the Mesozoic source rocks, and oceanic natural gas clatrates in the Arctic, respectively. Then follow articles on the regional and petroleum geology of the main regions; Greenland, North American Arctic, Soviet Arctic and the Barents Sea. Particular emphasis is placed on the Barents Sea. The two last chapters comprise articles on salt dynamics and methods. The book closes with a paper on international law in the Arctic. This volume will be of interest to both students and professional earth scientists/petroleum explorationists working in the northern latitudes. It will allow the readers to stay abreast of the development in this climatic region of the world.

The calculated density models of the Earth crust illustrate the deep structure of the main blocks of the crust. Five major gas-condensate and gas fields are discovered here: three (Shtokman, Ludlov, Ledovoe) in the Barents and two (Leningrad and Rusanov) in the Kara Sea.Geological and geophysical characteristics of the Russian Arctic Sea sedimentary basins allow an estimation of their hydrocarbon potential by comparison with the known world analogues.Total potential resources of giant deposits of hydrocarbons in Russian Arctic Seas are estimated at 470 billion barrels of oil equivalent. The richest resources are the Kara Sea and Laptev Sea. Less rich is Barents Sea. The relatively smaller contribution to the overall estimation of the resources makes the resources of East-Siberian Sea and Chukchi Sea.Development the energy capacity of the continental shelf of Russia can play a stabilizing role in the dynamics of oil and gas production in the period 2010-2020. A key role in developing the capacity of the Arctic shelf oil and gas play is the innovative technology in exploration, production and management of the relevant investment projects. Book excerpt: The Farewell terrane, in southwest Alaska, is predominantly located in the western Alaska Range, but crops out as far north as the Kuskokwim Mountains and represents one of the largest exotic terranes in the North American Cordillera. Exposed both north and south of the Denali fault, the Farewell terrane contains three somewhat distinct stratigraphic successions: 1) Neoproterozoic-Devonian carbonate rocks of the Nixon Fork subterrane, 2) Cambrian-Devonian carbonate and siliciclastic strata of the Dillinger subterrane, and 3) Devonian-Jurassic siliciclastic strata of the Mystic subterrane. This investigation aims to constrain the upper Paleozoic tectonic evolution of the Farewell terrane through sedimentologic interpretations and measured stratigraphy as well as by utilizing combined provenance techniques of sandstone modal compositions and U-Pb detrital zircon geochronology. Measured stratigraphy and sedimentologic analyses of upper Paleozoic (Mississippian--Permian) siliciclastic strata from the Mystic subterrane suggest a submarine basin-floor turbidite fan depositional environment. Modal composition trends reveal pervasive occurrences of lithic volcanic and sedimentary grains reflecting contributions from a magmatic arc to a recycled orogen source. U-Pb detrital zircon age peaks from the newly defined Mystic Pass formation reveals four trends in age spectra: 2000-1800 Ma, 465-405 Ma, 365-315 Ma, and 305-290 Ma. These trends correlate with both Siberian and North American magmatic source areas.
