Book Geology of the Western Snake River Plain

Download or read book Geology of the Western Snake River Plain written by William A Szary M S and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-08-21 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Western Snake River Plain trends northwest and is considered to be a fault bounded depression with normal faults forming major segments along both edges of the plain. Lacustrine sediments occur above thick basaltic sequences with some inter-bedded sediments mixed with basalt flows. The Western Snake River Plain and the Nevada rift developed as a continuous rift 17 million years ago. The WSRP upper crust was thinned or pulled apart as major extension began about 17 million years ago and the resulting depression was filled with up welling basalt and debris from the adjoining highlands. Chapter 1 presents an overview of the Snake River Plain as a product of the Yellowstone Hot Spot Theory. Features of each segment are described. Chapter 2 discusses the geophysics and tectonics of the SRP providing an overview and geologic setting of the western, central, and eastern SRP. Chapter 3 begins the discussion of the Western Snake River Plain addressing the geologic setting of structure and tectonics, sedimentation, and lacustrine sequences. Chapter 4 discusses the origin and evolution of the WSRP dealing with stratigraphy and volcanic units, structural faulting, and geochemistry. Chapter 5 presents a field trip discussion involving a cross sectional trace through the WSRP starting in the Owyhee Mountains extending into the Boise foothills. Ten stops are presented.

Book Roadside Geology of Idaho

Download or read book Roadside Geology of Idaho written by Paul Link and published by Mountain Press. This book was released on 2021-05-10 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn about the remarkable geologic diversity of the Gem State with the completely revised, full-color edition of Roadside Geology of Idaho. Excellent graphics, spectacular photographs, and straightforward writing describe and interpret the rocks and landscapes visible outside your car window, whether you're speeding across the Snake River Plain or following a narrow canyon enroute to a weekend getaway. The authors, a trio of experienced field geologists, guide you to outcrops and roadcuts where you can stretch your legs and expand your minds. The rocks of Idaho span a vast chunk of Earth's long-lived history and tell stories with many plot twists. Time and time again, geologic processes transformed the landscape-- mountains grew to towering heights only to be leveled by erosion, vast lakes drained in massive floods when ice and sediment dams failed, and lava poured into river valleys, creating new dams. With this book as their travel companion, residents and visitors alike are sure to understand and appreciate Idaho's sprawling plains, forested hills, and deep canyons in a completely new way.

Book Geology of the Central and Eastern Snake River Plain Part I

Download or read book Geology of the Central and Eastern Snake River Plain Part I written by William A Szary M S and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-08-21 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Central and Eastern Snake River Plain is a bimodal volcanic province formed by migration of the North American Plate westward over the Yellowstone Hot Spot. Volcanic units consist of rhyolitic flows and ash fall deposits with basaltic flows originating from eruptive and volcanic centers mainly known as the Bruneau-Jarbidge, Juniper Mountain-Owyhee, Owyhee-Humboldt, and Twin Falls volcanic centers. Chapter 1 presents the Central Snake River Plain volcanic province introducing sample locations where zircon populations occur from the Archaen to the Pleistocene periods. Modern stream signatures and drainage development are discussed. Chapter 2 addresses Snake River Plain rhyolites presenting volcanic progression, tectonic associations, and petrology. Chapter 3 presents details on Miocene tuff deposits belonging to the McMullen Creek Tuff. Chapter 4 discusses the transition from ash flow to voluminous lava flow activity in the Bruneau-Jarbidge eruptive center. Chapter 5 presents pre- and post- Juniper Mountain Volcanic Center conditions of rhyolitic, tuffaceous, and basaltic compositions. Chapter 6 presents basaltic units of the Bruneau-Jarbidge and Twin Falls regional areas. Chapter 7 begins the Eastern Snake River Plain discussion providing an overview of the provincial geology. Chapter 8 discusses Eastern Snake River Plain extension and subsidence including basin and range faulting and basin infilling. Chapter 9 presents Quaternary evolution of tholeiitic basalt eruptive centers. This chapter concludes Part I of a two part series on the ESRP. Part II presents a field excursion leading to Craters of the Moon National Monument, through the national monument, and introduces volcanics associated with the Great Rift of Idaho.

Book Snake River Plain Yellowstone Volcanic Province

Download or read book Snake River Plain Yellowstone Volcanic Province written by Kerry L. Ruebelmann and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1989 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Field Trip Guidebooks Series, Volume 305. This field trip was conceived as a way to introduce one of the major volcano-tectonic features of the North American continent to visiting scientists from abroad. Its objectives are to allow the participants to observe first hand the geologic relationships relevant to the formation of the Snake River Plain (SRP) and to discuss various interpretations of SRP genesis. The approach to these objectives is to travel the length of the plain from northeast to southwest and to examine in a logical manner, from younger to older volcanic rocks, the relationships important to an understanding of its origin and evolution (Fig. 1). Even though basaltic volcanism is commonly thought of in association with the SRP, this field trip will emphasize the importance of silicic volcanism because of its much greater volume and because of its profound effect on the upper crustal structure of the SRP.
