Book Geology and Ground Waters of the Western Part of San Diego County California Classic Reprint

Download or read book Geology and Ground Waters of the Western Part of San Diego County California Classic Reprint written by Arthur Jackson Ellis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-27 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology and Ground Waters of the Western Part of San Diego County, California The surface waters, though at times overwhelming in volume, are unfortunately not dependable and require expensive storage and transmission works for their Utilization. There are no perennial streams except at high levels and at a considerable distance from the coast where they are too small to be Of much practical value. Pre cipitation of sufficient magnitude to produce run-off is confined to three or four months of the year, and in years Of average precipitation the larger streams do not maintain a permanent ow for more than five or Six months. TO Obtain from the surface streams the unfailing water supplies required for irrigation and especially for domestic uses, it is necessary to provide large storage reservoirs. Conditions are made even more unfavorable by the wide variations in precipitation from one year to another and by the occasional periods of severe drought. This condition necessitates holding in reserve sufficient water (in storage) to supply the full requirements for a three or four year period. The expense Of providing the necessary storage works is great, and after the water has been stored the losses by evaporation from the exposed water surface may amount to a large proportion Of the volume originally stored. The problem Of keeping water up to a standard Of potability for domestic use after being held in storage for two or three years is also very difficult. Book Geology and Mineral Resources of San Diego and Imperial Counties

Download or read book Geology and Mineral Resources of San Diego and Imperial Counties written by Frederick J. H. Merrill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology and Mineral Resources of San Diego and Imperial Counties: December, 1914 The county of San Diego and its former eastern extension, now known as Imperial County, comprise a section of southern California unique in climate, mineral resources and agricultural possibilities. The first of these subjects has become familiar to the tourist and health seeker and has had an important influence in building up the city of San Diego and the population of the surrounding country. The second, to which this report is devoted, is of great interest for its variety, and will be, in the future, as it has been in the past, a matter of substantial financial importance. The agricultural conditions are so inviting that they have attracted world-wide attention and have been so attentively considered that they need not be described in detail here. The following report presents the result of nearly three months of field work in the two counties. In this limited time it was not possible to visit every locality, but, by combining the writer's personal observa tions on the principal properties with other data from reliable sources, all deposits, of any importance or interest, have received attention and are accurately recorded. In discussing the resources of these two counties, it seems advisable to treat them in two separate chapters, though their union prior to 1907 and their intimate relation in geography and geology, make it necessary to refer frequently from one to the other. Articles on the geology and mineral resources of San Diego County, together with Imperial County, are to be found in many of the publications of the State Mining Bureau, and to them the reader is referred for a large amount of historic detail. Reference to these will be found in the bibliography at the end of this report. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Dall again gave the age as Pliocene. In 1886 a note in the West American Scientist, presumably by its editor, C. R. Orcutt, stated. Book Geology and Mineral Resources of Santa Ysabel Quadrangle San Diego County California Classic Reprint

Download or read book Geology and Mineral Resources of Santa Ysabel Quadrangle San Diego County California Classic Reprint written by California Division of Mines an Geology and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology and Mineral Resources of Santa Ysabel Quadrangle, San Diego County, California The Santa Ysabel quadrangle lies along the east edge of the composite Peninsular Ranges batholith of Creta ecoas age. The oldest rocks are Triassic schists which occur as small roof pendants and as one large body in the vicinity of Julian. Jurassic gneissose quartz dio rite is intimately mixed with much of the schist, the two making a complex into which were intruded various members of the Cretaceous batholith. These intrusions are limited to gabbro and several tonalites. Structural features of the igneous rocks suggest that emplacement may have been accomplished by stoping in some places and by forceful injection in others. Pleistocene continental gravels occur as remnants of a once continuous extensive blanket in the northern portion of the quadrangle.
