Book Geology of the Glen Affric District

Download or read book Geology of the Glen Affric District written by J. D. Peacock and published by Bernan Press(PA). This book was released on 1992 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The remote area of the Northern Highlands described in this memoir is one of isolated, rugged beauty which particularly attracts climbers and ramblers. Many of these people wish to understand better how this area has evolved geologically and this memoir should help them to do this. This region has a fundamental geological significance in that it lies in the heart of the Caledonian mountain chain with a geology dominated by the intense deformation, metamorphism and igneous intrusion which produced the Caledonian orogenic belt in late Precambrian and early Palaeozoic times.

Book Geology of the Kintail District

Download or read book Geology of the Kintail District written by Frank May and published by Bernan Press(PA). This book was released on 1993 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This rugged mountainous region on the western seaboard of the north-west Highlands of Scotland is a sparsely populated area used for sporting activities (deer stalking, fishing) as well as forestry and the farming of fish and hill sheep. The, as yet, unspoilt mountain scenery attracts many visitors and a better understanding of the underlying geology may help towards a fuller appreciation of this national asset and its careful conservation. This memoir brings together the data, research and interpretations of the many geologists who have studied the region along with maps, diagrams and tables to provide a geological account of the Kintail district.

Book The Geology of Scotland 4th edition

Download or read book The Geology of Scotland 4th edition written by N. H. Trewin and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2003-02-24 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 4th edition of The Geology of Scotland is greatly expanded from the previous edition with 34 authors contributing to 20 chapters. A new format has been adopted to provide a different perspective on the geology of Scotland. A brief introduction is followed by a chapter outlining some of the important historical aspects that in the 19th century placed Scottish geologists in the forefront of a new science. Scotland is constructed from a number of terranes that finally combined in roughly their present positions prior to about 410 million years ago. Thus the geology of each terrane is described up the time of amalgamation, providing chapters on the Southern Uplands, Midland Valley, Highlands, Grampian and Hebridean terranes. At the end of this section, a brief synthesis summarizes the events that resulted in the amalgamation of the various terranes into the present configuration. Traditional practice is followed in the description of the Old Red Sandstone, Carboniferous, Permo-Trias, Jurassic, Cretaceous, tertiary and Quaternary strata. A separate chapter covers Tertiary igneous rocks. An attempt is made to tell the story of the geological evolution of Scotland, rather than catalogue all areas and formations. Priority is given to the onshore geology, encouraging the reader to go into the field and visit some of the world-class geology on show in Scotland. The chapters are broadly-based, attempting to integrate the sedimentary and igneous histories, and summarize changes in palaeogeography and palaeoenvironments. Economic aspects are covered with chapters on Metalliferous Minerals, Bulk Resources, Coal and Hydrocarbons. A new departure is the chapter on aspects of Environmental Geology and sustainability. Additionally, this publication contains a colour section of 32 plates, illustrating aspects of Scottish Geology, as well as a coloured geological map of Scotland.

Book Solid Geology of the Schiehallion District

Download or read book Solid Geology of the Schiehallion District written by J. E. Treagus and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The district described in this memoir lies in the centre of the Scottish Grampian fold-belt (part of the Caledonide Orogen). Book Geology of the Fortrose and Eastern Inverness District

Download or read book Geology of the Fortrose and Eastern Inverness District written by T. P. Fletcher and published by Balogh Scientific Books. This book was released on 1996 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication gives an account of the local geology of the Fortrose and eastern Inverness district. The district is geologically important for its position at the north-eastern onshore and of the Great Glen Fault Zone, one of the most conspicuous geological features in Britain. The whole region was variously glaciated during the Pleistocene ice ages. The present topography and surface deposits are a legacy of such times and establish the district as one of the most important in documenting British Pleistocene events, especially in sea level.
